Default What is meant by the term complex?

As I have been reading the reviews here on Basenotes, I keep encountering the term "complex." Examples of this are found in reviews for CdG 2 Man and Dzing. Here on the boards, I see things described as "more complex" or "less complex" than something else.

Does it have something to do with the number of changes a fragrance makes as it dries down? Or, is it just an indication of the number of notes contained in a fragrance? Is CdG Odor 53 complex just because it has 53 notes in its makeup? Is this term used interchangeably for both of these instances?

Any insight will certainly be appreciated.

Just speaking for myself, it is the character of the fragrance and not related to the listed number of notes. A "complex" fragrance has more depth, more facets, more character. and is more inclined to develop changes and nuances during a wearing than one that is not.

Scents that make you go hmmmm.

I use the term "complex" to describe both the evolution and the scent itself. It's hard to define what the word actually means so instead I will describe what it is NOT. Complex is not a linear scent. Complex is not a thin scent which is only comprised of one or two notes. Complex is not a scent that is unaffected by temperature. Finally, complex is not Acqua Di Gio 8-)

I'm with doclove here... Complex for me is a fragrance that might change a lot from wear to wear, and one I can sniff and constantly find new ways around, new notes revealing themselves. Speaking of CdG, I think 2 is the given scent from that house behaving this way.

Complex fragrance is the one which denies simple and short descriptions. I find Caron puH not complex (at least on me) since it is essentially lavender and vanilla. I also think it sucks, but that is beside the point.
