I believe it was Polo. Hard to remember--during high school I received Polo, Drakkar Noir, Quorum, Nino Cerruti, and Armani as gifts.

The 1st one I bought for myself was one of the original Abercrombie & Fitch colognes--I think it was "Woods" if I recall correctly. Everyone in college thought it was the greatest thing they had ever smelled.

Back in about 1962 or '63 I purchased a bottle of something called "Dante cologen for men".
It was very spicey / sweet along the lines of Old Spice, but I thought it was the classiest thing going. I have no idea who manufactured or distributed the stuff, but I loved it at the time and my girlfriend Dorothy was wild for it. It was sealed with a cork which gave her as a keepsake after the bottle was empty. The wearing of any cologne at that time kind of set one apart (Soph. in H.S.). I bought it in a men's clothing store. It was displayed right on the shelf next to the velvet collar jackets and H.I.S. casino slacks.
It was the only cologne the store carried. Think I spent $3.95 for 6 oz bottle. That was quite a bit at the time.
    Later on Canoe.

    Cheers..................

Chanel Pour Monsieur was my first ever frag purchase as well - in my early 20s. Funny thing is, after so many years and so many different perfumes, I still have Chanel PM, still wear it, and still love it.

The first cologne I think I ever wore was Brut (at age 5!!). I remember that when I was in kindergarten, my father would splash some of this on me so I'd smell classy (I guess). I remember kinda feeling self-conscious because I was the only kid in school that wore "adult" cologne!!

The first scent I ever bought for myself was Eternity for Men in 1993 (at age 30!). I really hadn't worn ANY cologne during my high school and college years (maybe a few splashes of my dad's Brut, Old Spice, and English Leather every once in awhile), but after reading a review of perfumes and colognes in Consumer Reports(!) magazine, I saw that Eternity for Men was ranked the #2 best smelling men's fragrance (right behind Drakkar Noir, which I didn't really care for at the time, but it has since become one of my all-time faves), so I decided to buy some. When I did, the salesperson gave me a sample of Cool Water, and I liked that one even better! I've been hooked on "good frags" (not cheapo drugstore wannabes) ever since!! [smiley=grin.gif]

My Aunt probably thinking I was a young gentleman and should have a bottle of fragrance got me a bottle of Royal Copenhagen when it first came out. I was about 12 or so. Maybe 1968-69 or something like that. When it first came out it wasn't considered drug store drek at the time. Neither was Brut. They were sold at mens cologne counters in fairly upscale department stores if I remember.

My grandmother used to buy me and my cousins small gift sets of things like English Leather, British Sterling, Old Spice, Brut. Stocking stuffer type gifts to make us boys feel more grown up like our fathers or uncles. I would say I was 10 or 11 years old. At 15 I started wearing what I consider proper fragrances like Halston 101 and Polo. While I enjoyed getting those gifts from my grandmother my interest in fragrance really started from this point.

In 1972 for my 16th birthday I was gifted a bottle of Eau Sauvage and a big bottle of 4711 by my eccentric but fun Great Great Aunt (she was the Jicky and Bandit wearing one). My mom fussed about the Eau Sauvage because it was "men's!" My aunt dismissed her with "Well, it's a lovely scent and I don't care WHO THEY say it is for, anyone can wear whatever they want". My mom was ok with the 4711 since it was "unisex". My mom, though she had great taste in fragrance, was very rigid in her "men's" and "women's" categorization of them.

    First cologne?

Polo Green in the early 90's (I was in 19 or 20), it was a blind buy, a gift set actually: a 50ml Edt bottle, a deodorant stick if I remember correctly.
Nowadays, i couldn't wear that powerhouse fragrance anymore, way too strong.

I was given Pierre Cardin for my birthday....

    That was probably 1983.

Then around 83 or 84, I set out to buy my first fragrance. I was entertainment editor for the school newspaper, so I even did an article about the whole experience. Bear in mind, this was IMHO the heyday for distinct and powerful male fragrances. At the end, I narrowed it down to Polo Green and Halston Z-14. The Halston won out, partially due to its slightly lower price and my perpetual lack of money. But it BARELY won out.

After that, I couldn't get Polo out of my head. Not sure how long it took before I was finally able to afford it...maybe close to a year. UGH

So, in the meantime I picked up a couple other fragrances.

    First purchase: Halston Z14.

Then in some order, Paco Rabanne, Jordache for Men, Quorum. Mom bought me Lancer, and it wasn't bad, but not an acceptable substitute for the real thing.
My updated top ten, in no particular order:
    Bentley Intense
    Cosmair Polo Green
    Green Irish Tweed
    Calvin(original blue)
    L'Occitane Eau Des Baux
    Spicebomb/Lomani Body and Soul(tie)
    Hanae Mori HiM EDP
    Pure Havane
    Dunhill Icon
    Halston Man Amber

It was the Diesel perfume that comes in a white bottle and a carton that looked like milk! Just googled and it was / is called Diesel Plus Plus, can't believe they still sell it! Very sweet and basic but back then it was magic.

Demon did you ever own Halston 101? That was my first proper fragrance that I selected for myself which I received as a Christmas gift in 1984. I've mentioned in some other posts how a classmate of mine wore it. He was a stylish guy so when I smelled it and it was something I never had smelled before I had to ask him. Shortly after that a girlfriend suggested Polo. While I wore Polo Ralph Lauren clothing I hadn't considered Polo fragrance as I tried to wear things that were not what everyone else was wearing. I remember having Halston Z-14 and 1-12, Calvin, Aramis, Paco Rabanne. My tastes are similar to yours as it appears we were in high school around the same time. I wish EA would bring back 101.

Truly the first thing I had was a vial of Bulgari BVL or BLV pour homme that my father got me when I was 7 years old. The first fragrance I purchased and that i personally consider as my first fragrance was Eau Sauvage.
