Default What do you think of Egoiste Platinum?

Hello. First time poster here so go easy on me guys Well I've been reading the posts here for a few months now and I've noticed that my all time favorite edt is hardly ever mentioned. I've owned various fragrances in the past including most of the Creeds and I seem to find myself always going back to none other than Platinum Egoiste. It's a perfect match for my skin and I've received the most compliments from it than any other scent. I also find it very versatile as I use it for casual dinners as well as for night clubs. It's my #1 for longevity as well as sillage. Sorry if I'm rambling but am I the only one who truly appreciates this? I hope I'm not alone. Please share your opinions. Also, knowing that I love this edt, are there any others you would recommend me getting? I'm not an expert by any means. Thank you very much.

Hi Teflon, welcome to the board

I wanted to like Platinum Egoiste, but I found it too sharp and cloying on my skin. On others it's fine, so I think it's a skin chemistry thing.

Luckily I found a fragrance that seemed to fit the bill as to what I "wanted" Platinum to smell like. That scent is Creed's Himalaya. It's a little more mellow and has a more of a warm incense accord than Platinum.

If you're looking for other dry woody scents, I would suggest sampling Azzaro Visit, Gucci PH, and Gucci Rush PH.

    Regards,

    Hello and welcome, Teflondog.

I don't think you need to worry about us going tough on you--you certainly made an exellent first post. In fact I think posts like this one are healthy in that they get us to think over a scent all over again.

Egoiste Platinum is a big enigma for me. When I joined the forum a few boards ago this one was all the rage. I even liked it a lot and bought a bottle. (One of three bottles I first bought after joining Basenotes. Others: Givenchy Gentleman and Dior's Higher.) Since then EP sure fell off my like-list and seems to have ended up on the forum's scorn-list. Is that really fair, I've wondered.

Some think this just turns to wet, dull, woods on them. As I sit here writing with a spray of it on my hand for testing, I see what they mean. But the scent isn't disagreeable at all. I even like the mossy feeling it gives me, which seems sort of like Halston 1-12, Kiton for men, Creed Green Valley genre. Maybe it even has a light floral in the top/middle notes. Last time I wore it for a test a friend on the board IMed me to say that he was secretly wearing it and liking it himself. I don't know that it is or will be in my top twenty, but this is always in my top "try again and see if I'll come around to seeing it as a beauty" list. In many ways it meets all of my favorite qualities: long lasting, sillage, woody, mossy, very well blended, but in many ways it just never catches fire on me either. Thus it remains an enigma. I can't get rid of my bottle though, and it never quite turns into an ugly nasty beauty either, nor does it settle into the huge field of bland middle inoffensive nothingness scents that are out there.

I've tried it in summer, fall, winter, and spring looking for it to take me on a magic carpet ride, but it never really takes off for me. Seems nice and respectable enough on me though. I wonder what happened to my like of this and similarly I wonder what happened to the board's appreciation of this.

I guess this is a great time for you to start posting--this scent needs a champion to get all of us to get our noses working on it again.
I'll be glad to wear it and think about it at least a few times more. Glad you're with us tef-dog.

chanels never let me down. they always have had incredible sillage and lasting power compared to the other EDT's i've owned.

PE is no exception. the only qualm i have with it is when you put it up to your nose or are very close to it,you can smell that chanel dry, metallic, synthetic trait to it. otherwise, sitting close to someone or having someone walk by and smelling it that way is divine.

when i first smelled it, it reminded me of the early 90's, but it grew on me and now it just has this 'classicness' to it that makes it seem appealing. it's exactly how clean mean should smell. i think it's a modern classic.

Sorry, but don't like this one at all. I "blind" bought this a while back when one of the early Internet fragrance sites rated it at 5 stars in all departments (scent, longevity, etc.), something none of the others had. Maybe I was expecting too much but, to me, this is THE definition of cloying. When I think of a "too much cologne guy", this comes to mind. It smells like cologne and I've always tried to stay away from "cologne" smelling scents. I know it's popular but just wasn't for me.

Anyway, welcome Teflondog! Sorry for the negative but we've all gotten used to them from time to time.

Hi Teflon and welcome. Top notes are great on me, the drydown is a bit too cloying. But it's a very well made fragrance with lots of personality. Chanel rules.

I found this scent being very "german". Funny, how perfume can do that. If I was asked how does "german" smell - well, no idea !! Just like Plat. Egoiste !! [smiley=lolk.gif]

It could have been a great fragrance but the sharpness spoils it! If it tones down a little after some time on the skin, I would get it. But so far I've only smelled it on a test strip. There's a fresh "plant sap" note in it that reminds me of Mugler Cologne. So if you like MC, you might like it!
Quite different from the original Egoiste. But there's still a slight hint of Egoiste running in it.
I didn't really mind the sharpness, but I didn't buy it because it's just too SYNTHETIC!

I have not not tested this because the locals don't have it in stock. Can someone please tell me what's the closest thing it smells to? I read somewhere that it smells kind of like GiT? *as long as it does not smells like Joop or Ralph Lauran Romance Silver,Angel,Ultravoilet i might be ok with it. *The stuff i like are GiT,Fahrenheit, RL Blue.

A fine scent for sure, but two older classical Chanels are closer to my heart. There I do miss some of the longevity and sillage PE obviously has.

Actually I am bit confused regarding the hype of Egoiste on these boards.
I would give it an average rating at best, but still it's not anything I would want to smell like.
Platinum Egoiste gets a 5 star rating from me, enough said.

Wow, I can't believe my very first post was revived!!! To this day I still own Platinum Egoiste but save it for the cooler months. I find that if I wear it during hot weather, it dries down to smokey wood. In the cold weather it remains crisp and fresh on my skin. It's a really good scent that doesn't get the credit it deserves IMO. I'd definitely recommend it to someone looking for a formal scent.

    Cheers everyone

A few years back, I tested Platinum on a paper strip and was impressed. The scent, especially the drydown was fresh, crisp and classy. Very well blended. Next time I tried it on my skin, and found out that my chemistry turns Platinum Egoiste into a sharp and sour unpleasant sillage monster. I also got negative feedback from people that usually don't say a word about my fragrances.

Actually this was the first time I realized how much skin chemistry can change a scent compared to a paper strip. After this experience, I have always checked every candidate on my skin before purchasing anything. Lesson learned. Anyway, with the right chemistry, I think Egoiste Platinum can be a classy and versatile fresh scent.

IIRC I think of it as somewhere between Paco Rabannes XS, CK Eternity, Picasso Minotaure or Biagiotti Roma. These four are quite okay, don't know if I'll ever get them though, but in comparison to them, PE somehow got pushed out of my scent memory. May need to revisit, just now I saw how many (and how many good) reviews this gets.

I agree that Chanel fargrances have a tradition of, "dry, metallic, synthetic". It must come from the revolutionary use of Aldehydes in No. 5.
You can blow smoke into a green fragrance, but you'll end up with the smell of air pollution.

Smile Re: What do you think of Egoiste Platinum?

    This was my review:

" Refined? Naw. Battery Acid? Close enough. Do women like it? I think Paris Hilton would, if you know what I mean, and I think you do.

THE ultimate clubbing scent. Pick up raunchy females clear at the other end of the bar, with just one spritz. Two and you have GOT to wear pierced earrings and sport a dumbass haircut.

Chanel has come up with a masterpiece again, only this one is a bold interpretation of every LOUD, and overbearing male citrus/wood scent made in the last decade. But what the hell, it's the best of the bunch. Good 'ole Chanel. "

    ---------------------------------------------------------

But if you think I gave it a thumbs down, you're wrong.

    Neutral.

    Why?

    Top five reasons, listed backwards:

    5. On some skin types the chemistry works and it's not battery acid. In fact, I think this is one of the most sensitive frags to skin chemistry.

    4. You might be tired of wholesome, kind, lovely, and heartbreakingly beautiful women who adore you-- and feel like getting horizontal with the stiletto heeled push-up bra set. Go for it!

    3. I'm not upset that Chanel had the gall to call this 'Platinum Egoiste' (Though perhaps ' Porno Egoiste' would have been more accurate)
However many of the thumb-down-haters were offended because the name implies:

    a) This is Platinum, so the original barely deserved a gold label.
    b) This has some relation to Egoiste, when in fact they smell NOTHING alike.

Lighten up, it was a maketing hype for $$--So, they sold their souls to the devil and ruined the rep of one of the best houses of all time? Hey, at least unlike Aramis, they weren't dumb enough to discontinue Havana, so there!

    2. It's not as bad as Bandit.

For me a train wreck of notes from beginning to end, to others the Holy Leather Laced Grail, considered far more elegant than P.E.

Well, last I checked it was everyone's constitutional right to wear Acqua Velva, A*men, Le Male, Old Spice, Joop, or one of Serge's overpriced honey fruitcake incense creations. Ambre Sultan? Well, as Groucho once said, one man's meat is another man's Persian.

    And, most of all . . .

    1. I THINK P.E. IS A HOOT!

Truly belonging to the category of crazy scents; Some great, others awful but above all, as nutty as all get out.

    A few examples?

    Nostalgia; The motor oil.

Peau d'Espagne; Tabasco spilled on leather.

Quasar; The marine banana wrapped in newsprint.

Pink Sugar, A fragrance marketed as 'Unisex '. Er . . .no comment.

Xeryus Rouge: Or 'Little House of Horrors' Beware the cactus flesh!

    AND

Platinum Egoiste! The battery acid monster sillage babelicious magnet.

    Cheers,

    Mario

I'm sorry, but this is not one of my favorites. I purchased it back in college. I had this mysterious French professor...like Michael Caine on acid, but French. Anyways, I had a hunch that he wore it, so I bought it. It starts out nice, but ends up riding on top of my skin. After a while, I just wanted for it to go away.

i love it. lasts a long time. sillage is great. I love the smell. It's unique and stands out. Doesn't smell cheap. Smells elegant and classy and fresh all at once. However, it's not a everyday scent. I don't like it when I work out...NO. It's better than that. I wear it to school about once a week, but that's pushing it... I'd save it for special occasions. I think I would get tired of smelling all that sillage and longevity 24 hours 7 days a week even if it is good (good with the ladies too)
