Default Round out my collection with a classic...

Well, I've decided one thing after I swore twice not to buy any more smellies:

My collection cannot be complete without a classic. Yeah, I had Guerlain Vetiver once, but I thought the smell was too "industrial" (i.e. the disinfectant universities and hospitals use), so I traded that one away for a similarly-sized Le Male.

I'm looking for a classic, yet contemporary scent that is readily available at department stores and/or Sephora and would complement my existing collection nicely. (Click on my signature for my wardrobe.) What should I try?

One note: it has to be less than $75 for a reasonably-sized bottle. Spray away!

I agree with Sung Homme. Try Lagerfeld Photo too.
Top 3: London Gentleman, Blackbeard's Delight, and Sex Panther. (It works 60% of the time, every time.)

Classic yet modern: Eau Sauvage - timeless.
Tabac Original (achtung! Some people consider it a bit synthetic; it has a bit of florals in it.)
Miss Dior - Green & leather. I regret trading away this baby.
Jazz (for summer) or Tsar (for cooler weather)

Modern yet classic: Dunhill Man (2003) [I noticed you don't have much musk in your wardrobe, and this is pretty damn good.]
Cuiron [noticed you don't have leather in de wardrobe either]

Ephemeral Top 5: YSL PH HC, Worth PH, Equipage, Monsieur Rochas HC, Acqua di Gio

I'll second Sung Homme AND Zino, but Zino you are not likely to find at Sephora.

Since I'm on an Aramis kick, any scent in this line works just fine.

Assuming its summer where you live, the candidates I would offer for the "here and now" would include:

1) The aforementioned Dior Eau Sauvage
2) Monsieur de Givenchy
3) Armani Pour Homme

All citrus / herbal blends, the latter two having a oakmoss-based drydown. My SOTD was Monsieur, and this evening it scored one of the few compliments I've received in a long time. Long after I thought the scent had vanished, a woman at the bar walked by and said out loud to her friend "wow, he smells good".

Doesn't happen often!

Cheers,
Jim

Agreed 100% this stuff is the friendliest 70's/80's scent I've ever encountered. Either that or I agree on the Jazz recommendations as well. It's tough to say which I like more though. If you're feeling manly enough try out Yatagan and Gentleman, they aren't for everyone, but you might love them. They are pretty much love or hate scents, which are my favorite type of scents, since you'll get a strong reaction one way or the other. The first two are friendlier though if you want that.

Definitely Chanel Antaeus: a true masterpiece of contemporary classic perfumery!!!

I also agree with Azzaro PH (which has the added bonus of being fairly inexpensive) and Eau Sauvage.

You might also consider Chanel pour Monsieur or Antaeus. Paco Rabanne PH is also a classic and different from most of those listed.

Cheers,
Bob
