    Default Kouros 1st timer

This weekend I was at the mall wandering around a large department store when out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a white and silver bottle. I have heard so much about Kouros but have never smelled it so I had to see what all the fuss was about. It took a few minutes to find a SA and when I did she tried her best to keep me from smelling Kouros, she hand me a strip she had sprayed with Body Kouros, I told her I wanted to smell Kouros and pointed at the bottle, then she ignored my request and pulled out a bottle of Kouros Sport, again I told her I was interested in smelling Kouros, when she reached back in the counter and brought out the Kouros Fraicheur I almost gave up. Finally she pulled out the Kouros tester and sprayed it onto a strip for me (while making the most unusual face). I brought the strip up to my nose and the scent attacked my nostrils, it almost burned, it was like a soapy, sweet, musky version of ammonia, I loved it.

I thought it would be quite a while before I could wear it though as this is Summer time in Tennessee which means the temperature tends to be just slightly cooler than hell and the humidity stays pretty close to the level normally found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and I don't really see Kouros as being appropriate for this kind of weather but I woke up this morning to the remnants of Hurricane Dennis so it was much cooler than normal and raining. I took this opportunity to apply a very small spritz of my new purchase to my chest after I got out of the shower, man, this stuff is stout! I think a bottle of this might last me 30 or 40 years if I wore it daily! But the smell was amazing.

Later on in the day the temperature started to rise and at the same time the fragrance started to morph, it became much less soapy, much more musky. I started noticing a very slight body odor like smell, much more musk, a slight tinge of a urine like odor, new notes kept pouring in all of them sharing one thing in common, they would all make perfectly good sense to your nose if you inhaled deeply while having sex, all that was missing was the scent of latex and lubricant.

I feel like I shouldn't like this, almost like enjoying Kouros is like enjoying porn, and that I am enjoying it in public. I don't know if I could wear Kouros around my mother, or around a group of nuns, but I can certainly think of people that I would want to wear it around.

I mean I like unusual scents, Salvador Dali ph, CdG Skai and Odeur 53 are some of my favorites, but the nice thing about them is the slight air of confusion they create, there is nothing at all confusing about Kouros. It knows exactly what it is, it is blunt, frank, and completely honest. I can't wait to wear it again.

I sampled Kouros for the first time a few weeks ago, and I have to agree with many people on Basenotes that it smells like urinal cakes soaked in urine. It is one of the few fragrances that actually made me cringe.

    Hi Kilted,

WELCOME TO THE MADNESS! I very much enjoyed the story of your first KOUROS experience. KOUROS is one of my FAVORITE fragrances (and I have tried HUNDREDS!). I do believe it was KOUROS that turned me around in a NEW direction (away from TOO sweet fragances) and on the road to what I refer to the more UNIQUE (some stay stinky) fragrances. Seeing as you like KOUROS, you MUST try SMN ACQUA DI CUBA! I might also suggest L'ARTISAN DZING.

    Regards,
    SixCats!

That`s a very good and complicated fragrance.
Hard to understand it - it`s very good welded, almost seamless... I was trying a lot of times to derive a leather and ambergris from it... And finally I found them along with patchouly and other..

And, kilted - I like your metaphore about porno!!!

    Welcome to the clube Kilter!

You have fine sensibilities my friend. Kouros indeed is the "King of Porn". YSL at his most sublime nastiness. [smiley=shocked.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Kouros Cologne Sport is very strange and worthwhile too. I'd skip the others, especially Body K, which I can only endure during a workout since I shower [smiley=bath.gif] it off afterwards.

That's not a fresh urine note in KOUROS either. That's urine after it has set up a bit. *[smiley=grin.gif] Add in some jasmine, ambergris, and vetiver and it really gets going. Reminds me of some weird offbeat Indian incenses I find at bead store in town. You are right about the heft too. I expect my 50 ml bottle to last me.

I thought that everything which could possibly be said about Kouros, has been mentioned here 100 times before. Kilted, you taught me a lesson though! Your paragraphs 3 and 4 illuminate those odor sensations in a new way - much appreciated!
Re latex & lubricant scents missing: we should perhaps forgive that. At Yves time both items were less in use (in Europe) [smiley=undecided.gif]

Great post Kilted. A totally fun read on a wild and crazy wonderful scent. Welcome to the valley of the weird.

Thanks for this morning's good chuckle!

If you want a lighter version of Kouros, Kouros Cologne Sport Eau d'Ete (2003) is very much a lighter version of Kouros. I don't know if this is the same as the one which was reissued this year with the cool new logo.

Body Kouros was for the longest time my favorite scent. Now, I find it a little too linear, and my taste has drifted away form gourmands.

If you are into vetiver-type scents, give Kouros Fraicheur a try... just don't overdo it. Personally, I think it is great for the summer, and wore it a couple of nights ago.

    Kilted,

glad to see you like the masterpiece that is Kouros.

i can never wear it in public because it IS such a forthright declaration.

I just saw the movie Anchorman finally and all I can say is, I'm sure that "Sex Panther" probably smells like Kouros!

But if one can hang a painting on one's wall and admire it, then I can keep a botle of Kouros on my cabinet and spray and admire it from time to time. I do wear the Sport versions in public sometimes, but even they have the offputting yet magnetic qualities of the original.

Kouros is the one fragrance I could never tire of!

    great post!

My father tells me that Kouros and Iquitos get him more compliments than anything else. I plan on getting bottles of both asap. The Cologne Sport version I have is just too light. [smiley=evil.gif]

Porn is only so-so when it's just "naughty."

Porn is pablum next to the raw, animal magnificence of Kouros. Kouros forces the otherwise scrubby-cleaned, soapy-fresh, hygenically pure to confront the deeper, darker side of their human nature; the side that craves the real earthy pungency of human sexuality. Kouros is not silk sheets and Summer's Eve. Kouros is a chaos that makes some uncomfortable. It's an fabulously rancid orgasmic genie in a bottle, waiting and ready to wreak havoc on the otherwise respectable smelling guy.

Hey, Mr. Aqua Gio...Go on. Smell the Kouros. Yea...oh Yea...You know you want it...

Kouros is without a doubt, the worst fragrance I have ever smelled. It's the worst urine soaked in urinal cakes. I hate it so so much.

See the intense passion Kouros ignites? What other scent can do that? I rest my case.

Haha! Amazing! I believe Kouros is explained through profuse and deep inhales, thus if one inhales of a timmid matter ofcause he is bound to get the top notes to which are urine and skank, though an abstruse, abundant and passionate inhale will play with the most luxurious scents, Ie; the Oakmoss, patchouli and luxurious bergamot! This scent is a harsh, crude yet clean and opulent scent! All at once!
    Amazing!

For me at the moment there exists the set of fragrances: this, that and the other, Quorum, Azzaro, Insensé, Paco Rabanne - all very nice, etc, etc. And then...

Then outside the set of fragrances - the exception that creates the set almost - there is Kouros. There seems to be - so far at least - nothing like it for pure power, beauty and distinctiveness.

Don't just wear it at home. Stink. Go out in the world and stink.

I don't know why people insist that Kouros is a fall/winter scent. Everything about it screams "Mediterranean beach at high noon". It comes off too powdery, soapy, and halogen-bright when worn in winter.

This is great! This thread, resurrected and regurgetated from almost six years ago.....reminds me how YSL's beastly Kouros was, is, and probably always will be a polarizing force, not only on these hallowed boards of Basenotes, but in the world as a whole!

I am one of the few who stand a middle ground, as Kouros has never repulsed me, nor has it set my world on fire. I'm gonna say it.....at this juncture, Kouros is just "alright" with me.

Was looking for a thread on Kouros when this caught my eye, an experience just like mine yesterday night. First time with Kouros albeit in a foreign land - first time to try it in Mustafa at Singapore's Little India area.

Unfortunately I'm putting myself in the "revolted" side of the fence.

This gave me a headache that I couldn't believe -- bad choice to smell my skin right off that first spray, then continuing to sniff even when I felt the headache coming on. In bed, with my headache about to subside, I had a thought "Hmmm, is Kouros doing this? *smell skin* again" Pow, headache came back.

Wanted to like this really. Now I get where half of BN's peeps are coming from. Ick.

Why is this? Is it a bit toned down now? When I hear about stuff being better years ago, like Fahrenheit, Kouros, Versace L'Homme, etc., it makes me not want to buy it.

Funny story. I don't blame the Service lady skipping over original Kouros. LOL. It is beyond Stinky to me. If you ever heard a mother tell a kid to take a shower and not just spray on cologne to mask the body funk, that is Kouros. But wear what you like.

I once went into a boutique in Antwerp and the lady praised kouros and called it the king! A really remarkable experience

Too bad you had to experience that off-putting behavoir from a sales lady.
Well, it's kind of ironic that the lady in the department store didn't want it to be smelled?! I've smelled body kouros, but not the flankers... still I know that the original kouros is the best imo.

And pff honestly I'm getting anoyed by the urinal cake remarks, because Kouros is a decent fragrance and I'm not always focussed on the dirty side of the fragrance, and those comment make me want to dislike my fragrance.
It just doesn't smell like piss, seriously!!
