Silver Mt. Water, Amen, Body Kouros. Maybe Allure.

Every time I wear SMW, I'm disappointed. Yet, I know better than to trade it away again. I like it just a smidge better than Creed MI. I love many other Creeds (GIT, Him., OV).

Amen is good, but so tricky.

BK just never took off with me. Rochas Man is a suitable replacement.

Allure is just ordinary on my skin. I'd love to love it, but...

Current faves: Aventus, Green Irish Tweed, MFK Masculin Pluriel, Dior Homme Eau, TDH Parfum

Well, I don't wanna mention any names ,cause what I find overrated is a heavenly fragrance to another, but on the whole I have to say that this whole "niche" thing is highly overrated. I own one LÁrtisan and a few MPG's and I love them, but to say that they are more adventurous or better than designer ones, I have to say
    no.

I don't understand Guerlain Vetiver. It's really beyond me. I don't even get Green Irish Tweed for that matter - but GV... To me, it is really the olfactory embodiment of decay...

SMW, Kouros, and Mugler Cologne are great!
I think the most overrated one here is Piper Nigrum. I just got a bottle of this in a trade and while it isn't horrible, its not the greatest stuff in the world here.
Oriscent, AgarAura Pure Ouds, Creed, LIDGE, Patou Pour Homme, tons of niche and rare stuff for sale!

Creeds - However, this isn't a bad thing since they're only overrated in basenotes.com. I believe they're quite uncommon in the real world.

Azarro Visit - ugh....all I get from this is the sharp, bitter smell of the alcohol used by nurses to clean my skin before they stick a needle in me. And this smell is unique. My store-bought rubbing alcohol doesn't seem to smell the same. One of those psychological/olfactory tricks I guess.

Yes, I like Guerlain Vetiver but I have had a woman tell me it smelled like formaldehyde.

yes, definitely Rive Gauche and Piper Nigrum, i've always heard about the hype and excellent ratings especially on these two. But i was utterly disappointed. The only fragrance that i think lived up to its hype is Santal Noble by far. Other ones not as close.

Antaeus, Kouros, M7, SMW, MPG RdV, Dior Jules, CDG-anything, are all fine, sophisticated fragrances, but I simply cannot wear them...therefore they get my vote!

    Eric,
I'm just having fun with with you and I truly mean no slight.

But aside from scents of several decades ago or longer, niche/artisanal/small house creations are the only ones--very very broadly speaking--that keep my nose happy.

    Best,

    Hi all,

HackerX...I agree with you about Rive Gauche (YSL) being over rated...HOWEVER...I completely DIS-agree with you on one of the most OUTSTANDING fragrances known to man...
LORENZO VILLORESI "PIPER NIGRUM!". PIPER NIGRUM (IMHO) is a MUCH more complex, interesting, unique than SANTAL NOBLE (which IS, is a good smelling fragrance) but...IMHO...not very unique...not too complex, and not too interesting. Now...you know the House of MPG also makes one of my VERY favorite fragrances of all times "EAU DES ILES" so I am not bashing MPG. Oooh...of course I also disagree with you about (YSL) KOUROS! KOUROS is a gift from the GODS! That being said...I guess I was most disappointed with all the HYPE surrounding (YSL) M7.

    Regards,
    SixCats!

I really really tried to like Piper Nigrum, even forced myself at times, but it just never hit me, i had to gave it up. But i admit that it's one of the most unique strange fragrances i've ever encountered, just wasn't meant to be. This is definitely my final thought on Piper Nigrum. However, i will stick with my Dilmun, utterly strange too, but i actually like it which is quite rare these days.

Silver Mountain Water is my least favorite of the Creed fragrances that I have tried. M7 is not my idea of anything wearable or classic. Gucci Pour Homme is thoroughly obnoxious, to my nose.

    Hi X,

X...I don't mean to say that PIPER NIGRUM is for everyone!  It is NOT!  At least you gave it a try!  Let's face it...some fragrances just work (or don't work) on/for certain people.  Now DILMUN...God...I LOVE DILMUN (mostly for Summer).  Michael...I have to agree with you SMW was GONE from me in 30 minutes!  I did like the opening but...because it was gone from me soooo quickly...I can't say anything about a dry down lol.

The most overrated scents, eh?  So you speak of the Golden Calves!  Another Basenoter and I were just discussing the Golden Calves in private recently.  I have yet to think any of the sainted, blessed Golden Calves are worth the rose petals Basenoters have scattered about their altars:

Silver Mountain Water, Platinum Égoēste, The Dreamer, Body Kouros, Mugler Cologne, Gucci pour Homme, Rive Gauche pour Homme, John Varvatos, etc.

All the scents have, at some moment or other, caught the masses' attention and driven them into seemingly unending weeks and months of scent orgies, stopping only to stone those of us heretics who dare to say, "Hey, that ain't all that great!"

But the be-all, end-all of overrated colognes on this website would be the twin Golden Calves Emeriti:

Let the trumpets sound for MILLÉSIME IMPÉRIAL and PIPER NIGRUM!
