Rive Gauche...though I don't like to wear it myself, it does smell something like my grandfather would have worn.

My suggestions would be to try Azzaro Pour Homme or Chanel Antaeus, both classics IMHO.

Let us know what you go for in the end !!! ???

ok as i think about it, if i was 58 years old, i wouldn't want to wear anything that would date me. i woould want something that is perfect for any age.

i say Creed MI -- its safe.

Lagerfeld, Versace L'Homme, and Gucci pour homme would all be suitable for a 30 or a 58-year-old!

Why don't you let your dad sniff your stuff and see if anything strikes him?

I really hate the idea of "age appropriate" fragrance. I can't understand why anyone would want to limit their range of experience olfactory or otherwise. You miss out on far too much in life that way, but whatever...

I'm fairly mature but don't want to be classified in that way. You love to put things in boxes - I've noted this from many of your posts!

Anyway I suggest a Creed - your two ideas seem good, or a Trumper.

One of the advantages of being a "mature" man is that I feel a lot freer to do, or wear, whatever I want without worrying what others think. "New," "old," "male," "female," I wear what ever fragrance fits my mood for the day.

If you are looking for a gift for this person, why not start by asking about what he wears now, or has worn in the past, and seeing if there is a pattern to what he likes, e.g. orientals, chypres, fougeres, etc., and looking for something that matches his tastes, rather than a generic choice of what an older man "should" wear.

One more thing. You mentioned that your Dad used to wear Canoe. Here are the notes for that. Looking at those might give you an idea of some other colognes that have them in common. Also, the Lavender, geranium, and oak moss notes in Canoe make it a a classic Fougere, so there's a category to look at.

    Lavender, Clary Sage, Lemon

    Middle Notes
    Geranium, Carnation, Cedarwood, Patchouli

    Base Notes
    Vanilla, Tonka, Heliotrope, Oakmoss

Since your Dad doesn't wear colognes generally I would stick with something safe - perhaps Art of Shaving Sandalwood.

    Jigga:

I suggest a kind of fragrance that is bold and subtle at the same time. Try Helmut's Cuiron; Saint Laurent's Jazz or Rive Gauche; Goutal's Duel; Rochas Lui or Guerlain's Habit Rouge Eau de Parfum... or anything that has the perfect ingredients for us the oldies but goodies: a lot of arid woods, leather, spices-particularly vanilla-, patchouli and a little touch of lemon, lime, bergamot and who knows...even lavender.

    I'm 40 something almost 50, i should know.

ok, i'll be 45 in a week, and yes, i will accept presents.

i think creed GIT would be a good choice. i get the most compliments with that on by far. MI is good too, and i also concur with chanel pour monsieur. all excellent, conservative choices

YSL pour Homme (1971) IMHO This has got to be one of the best "DaddyO" fragrances available. Clean, Confident and Classic . You cant go wrong with this one.

Crabtree and Evelyn has some good men's fragrances. Nomad, Sienna and Sandalwood all have woods and spices, very mature and refined stuff. I'm 27 and I really like them too.
Oriscent, AgarAura Pure Ouds, Creed, LIDGE, Patou Pour Homme, tons of niche and rare stuff for sale!
