OK, so you would never buy a high end frag in Oz without paying at least twice the retail price it's really worth overseas > but you can sample here before making your purchase online:

    Paint'n Powder
Shop 13, Royal Arcade, off Bourke St Mall, Melbourne.
What you can't find in DJ's/Myer, you'll find here, including Caron.
Sampled L'Heure Bleu, Cristobal, Un Jardin en Méditerranée, 24 Faubourg.

    DNA Body Boutique
GPO Melbourne, 350 Bourke St, Melbourne.
Stocks L'Artisan, SMN, MPG, LV, Diptyque, Renee, a few others.
    Sampled Sandalo, Patchouli Patch.

This post also appears on the Internet - Retail thread, but as this thread is Australia specific, and as the DNA Boutique mentioned by Elysium has closed, I thought it worth repeating.

Art of Man is a men's grooming and skincare site that also sells a few niche fragrances which is good news for Australians as they are so hard to find. They stock the whole men's line of Parfums de Nicolai (the only place in Australia I think), a few of the more popular Annick Goutals (Duel, Sables, Eau d'H, Les Nuits d'H and Mandragore), Acqua di Parma and Lalique. Their skincare and grooming range is pretty extensive, Trumper, e Shave, True Gentlemen, Nickel, Zirh, Phytomer and an Australian all natural brand About Face. While its retail prices, they have regular discount offers (recently all Nicolai's were 20% off) and a loyalty scheme that can get you up to 15% off. They deliver Australia wide, and deliver free in Sydney city and for orders over $150. I inquired about samples and they advise they will soon be adding the opportunity to purchase samples. I have ordered shaving products so far and the service was prompt and efficient and beautifully packaged. Also the answer to my inquiry about samples was almost immediate (they also added they would like to be able to stock the whole Goutal men's line but the distributor isn't bringing the ones they don't stock in at the moment).

    [blue]To Melbournians in the know,

What's the name of that little store on Brunswick Street that has a whole bunch of niche fragrance like Annick Goutal and Diptyque and many others I can't remember? The store also sells soaps and other bath products. It's on the left hand side of the street as you're heading north on Bruswick Street.

There's also a little store, a perfumery, in on of those many little arcade in the city that sells a large number of different lines of niche fragrances. What's the name of that one, and where exactly is it located?

    I would appreciate any information.

The only place I know that had Creeds were DNA and their parent company Harrolds. Just before DNA closed, the lady their said the Creeds would be going back to the Harrolds stores. They have two stores on Collins St. The one near Russell St always has more scents than the one near King St. Give them a ring to see what they have in stock.

    Default Australian Scents in Melbourne

I was walking up King St the other day (towards Latrobe St). Just as you get to the Flagstaff Gardens, on the left side of the road there is a colourful Koori Heritage store that stocks the full range of Mount Romance scents like Larrikin For Men, Santalia and several other women's scents, and they had testers for them. Till now, I'd only ever seen them on the net.

I had a pleasant discussion about Larrikin with the lovely Aboriginal girl who was looking after the store, and bought a big 150ml tube of Larrikin aftershave balm (since I already had the Larrikin).

If you like sandalwood, you really should check Larrikin out at this store. I think it's one of the best.

Didn't DNA close down? It used to be on the ground floor but it's not there anymore. It's extremely difficult to find niche perfumes in brick and mortar stores in Melbourne.

I also try not to go into Paint and Powder unless I have no choice because the people that work there are quite rude. I've asked to test things and they always look at me as if I said something ridiculous.

Yes, DNA closed down about 11 months ago and they had the best sale ever. But there's lots of niche stuff scattered around town.

There was another niche store in Flinders Lane between Swanston and Elisabeth Street, on the side furthest away from Flinders Street - beats me what it's name is, but they had all the Artisans, Federick Malle and a few other manufacturers there last time I looked just over a year ago. Also Harrolds near 101 Collins Street still had some last time I went there. Meccacosmetica in Little Collins St had all the Serge Lutens. Myers in the city have some Annick Goutal and Aqua de Parma. David Jones in the city has a lot of Artisans, but they've really jacked up their prices on them from six months ago. They also carry quite a few Penhaligon and Aqua di Parma scents, which were also pretty expensive.

If you want to know exactly where all the niche ones are - do what I do - just PM a message to the Melbourne expert - Sarjeet.

I haven't bought much from E Bay - some had some steep postage charges, and some seemed to get stuff sent in from overseas when you'd one the bid.

I usually either buy from Strawberrynet or http://www.perfumery.com.au/ if I'm after something.

    Hi Alex,
I think you are referring to Paint'n'Powder in Armadale. I visit it as often as I visit the dentist - since he's about 4 or 5 shops further up the road.

That Paint'n'Powder store now has nothing to do with the store of the same name in Melbourne (in an arcade between Bourke and Elisabeth Streets).

I think Paint and Powder is a rip off, too. No testers, and asking way to much moula...I went in to enquire about Guerlain Nahema and Vol de Nuit, and they prices they were asking were way OTT...I expected better, but I guess they can take advantage of those without the internet !!

Default Australina BNers - Some help needed.

    To all Australian BNers,

A cousin of mine is heading Down Under in a couple of weeks time and i'm planning to ask him to get a few fragrances for me that aren't available in Malaysia. Specifically, he will he heading to Melbourne but not sure which part yet.

The one frag i have in mind at the moment is Body Kouros. So i need some advise on the best place with good prices in Melbourne to get it. Also, what are the places in Melbourne to avoid getting frags. How about the prices in Duty free?

    thanks for the help

  34. #34

Default Re: Australina BNers - Some help needed.

You can get Body Kouros just about anywhere in Australia at the moment, quite cheaply. I know Perfume Empire has the 100ml for $49.95 at the moment:
    http://www.perfumeempire.com.au/depa...&labelid=20417
Perfume Empire is everywhere. I've also seen it in chemist stores and various discount stores.
Duty Free prices are not so great. Stick with the discounters.
I'm sure some of our Melbourne basenoters (calling Gupts and Renato!) will be able to help further!

    Yeah Trufflehunter...thanks for the holler....

@ Johny 4...mate you can advise your friend to go to the local Kmart Stores that are all over the city....He's bound to come across them in several shopping malls here....Renato, another fellow basenoter from Melbourne, recently got hold of some fantastic deals on some designer fragrances....As Trufflehunter already highlighted, Perfume Empire is another place where you'd find a lot of frags at great prices...

My Chemist and Chemist Warehouse are two pharmacies (again the outlets are all over the city) where one can buy cheap....perhaps it'd be best to get Body Kouros from there....The more expensive perfume stores are in Myer or David Jones...Generally prices are very high in these two stores but sometimes when they have some special sale going on, one can get some fantastic deals...

You can also look at this thread here for some more information http://community.basenotes.net/forumdisplay.php?f=48

Kelly Caleche is currently "on sale" - $90 AUD for 100 mls EDT / $70 AUD for 50 mls at Perfume Empire. NB: Perfume Empire have the same price online as they do in their stores.

    JoNnY 4,

re the Duty Free prices - I think Renato travels regularly, so he's your man. My observations are:

    1) Not a great saving to be had dollar wise - the duty is only 10% anyway - and you'll often find better prices online, or even in a store, on sale

    2) There may be fragrances available duty free which are otherwise difficult to obtain - they often have latest releases months in advance of retail stores, and some editions which you'd never see otherwise

    3) A number of the duty free stores provide a 'shop on line, collect at the airport' service - which might be convenient for you.

    Arrow Re: Melbourne, Australia

In central Melbourne, the only place I scavange is along Elizabeth St.
Going from Flinders St Station up towards the Bourke St Mall, there are two My Chemist stores with the specials in the window, and some inside - I saw Body Kouros on sale there today. Unfortunately, with so many people going by, a lot of the goodies disappear more quickly from there than they do in the suburban stores - so the pickings aren't as good.

Also there is a Perfume Connection store on that street which often has good sales - today they had a 100ml bottle of Bogart's City Tower for A$40. There are also Perfume Connection stores at the basement level of Melbourne Central station and at the Crown Casino complex - but their sales and testers seem a bit patchier compared to the Elisabeth St store, which in turn isn't as good as suburban stores (where in the past I've picked up 100ml Coriolan, 100ml Equipage, 75ml Guerlain Vetiver and 50ml Egoiste for between A$30 and A$35 each).

Don't waste any time with the copy perfumes sold all along Swanston St.

Priceline stores are all around central Melbourne, and their scents are usually cheaper than the duty free stores, and often have some good sale items. The biggest one is on the Bourke St Mall two or three stores down from the men's fragrances at David Jones, and up an escalator.

The only other store I visit is the Cosmetics Fragrances Direct located in the DFO complex just next to Southern Cross Station. You can buy Halston Z-14 Edt and Aftershave gift pack for A$15. Recently I bought 100ml testers there of Bvlgari Extreme, Bvlgari Soir, Dunhill Desire for A$29 (I passed on the Bvlgari PH and Aqua at the same price).

Unfortunately, all the other stores for cheap scents tend to be in shopping centres or shopping strips out in the suburbs. Chemist Warehouse used to be good, but have gotten a bit dearer lately.

I wouldn't bother with the Duty Free places at the airports, I haven't seen anything cheap there ever.

Tell your friend that if he wants a good look around central Melbourne that there are brown Trams that circle the city for free, with a taped commentary. And that there are tourist buses which are free to many of the main sites (just check the Melbourne home page to find out their routes). Pretty good value, I pay a small fortune for such trips when I go overseas.

Johny, I totally concur with what Renato said. Spot on. Definitely try the My Chemist stores along Elizabeth Street. They often have unboxed Body Kouros bottles. I managed to grab a 30ml bottle of boxed Rocabar for 29.99 which was not too bad. Alas it was the last one.
They had plenty Burberry London 30ml bottles for the same price if that tickles your fancy.
The department stores in the city, Myer and David Jones, are having sales at the moment although their clearance items arent really that spectacular. Still, as both of these stores are in the heart of the tourist shopping precinct (Elizabeth St/Bourke St) you cousin will most likely venture by both and see if there are further discounts. Tell him to be sure to bring some warm clothing, as its bloody freezing here at the moment!

    All the best,

Shame you are not flying International - I work in the duty free there and we have 100 ml Habit Rouge and Vetiver for $60.00 just sitting there looking all sad and forlorn ... I am sure some snappy traveler will pick them up soon !

    All the best - Ed

    Thanks Ed,

Just to confirm / expand on some the answers:

    1) Yes the Chanel boutique at Chaddy does have the Les Exclusifs. There was no problem getting spray cards of the 5 I wanted to try; nor of going back later to try two on my skin. I didn't push the issue about samples. The assistant Cherie is dead-set gorgeous; and knows the perfumes too, although I think she specialises in the make-up. (Seriously, she's beautiful).

    2) Myer in Bourke Street have the Guerlain Les Parisiennes, including Vetiver pour Elle. The woman there was very helpful - even though I was interrupting her paperwork. There was also an Eau de Cologne Imperiale - labelled Thierry Wasser 2010 - anyone know much about this? In a bee bottle I might add!

    3) and 4) I didn't have time for the DFO unfortunately; nor Mecca at South Yarra.

    5) I usually call in on Paint and Powder - can I say this is the first time I thought the staff were a bit 'hostile'? Very disappointing.

    6) Lots of great niche / less than mainstream options in DJs - Jo Malone; Juliette Has A Gun; Lubin; Amouge etc. Also, James, the assistant at Tom Ford was terrific (although, Dimi, he knows nothing about Twisted Love either!).

    7) Miss Veronica - sorry I couldn't make your get-together - Skybus were very insistent about picking me up at 12.30. Next time!!

    Cheers
