    Default Adelaide, Australia

    1. Myer in Rundle Mall.

My Rating: Hmmm, Its okay, not very big range. I remember they got these brands: Davidoff, Bvlgari, Stella, YSL, Tommy Hifiger, DKNY, D&G, Escada, Giorgio Armani, ... But they dont have Roberto Cavalli and 212 .

    2. David Jones in Rundle Mall.

My Rating: Bigger than Myer's one. It has Cavalli but not 212, has bigger range.

    That's the only 2 i know ...

I was in Adelaide a few weeks ago and it was diabolically bad for fragrances. Apart from the department stores, which had the same as the rest of the country, the entire city has been stocked up on "Looky-Likies". You know: "if you like Obsession by Calvin Klein, then you'll also like ::wink wink: Obstreporous by Kevin Krime".

    Gave up in disgust.

    Hello Fragrance lovers,

My starting point is that I wouldn't buy perfume in Adelaide. It's way too expensive compared with shopping on line.

That said, you do need somewhere physical to try the scent first.

In addition to DJs and Myer ... (btw, does Myer have the pushiest shop assistants in the perfume section ?)

That place in Regent Arcade is called La Profumeria.

I'd also suggest Henry Buck's on the corner of North Terrace and Gawler Place - very small and limited range which varies from time to time, and which you probably won't find anywhere else in Adelaide. Currently Etro, Zegna, and one of the traditional English cologne makers (sorry, can't remember which).

National Pharmacies in Gawler Place actually has quite a good range of upper-end mainstream fragrances.

It's impossible to be served in either 'My Chemist' and 'Chemist Warehouse'. Chemist Warehouse does sell it's sample minatures however - which can be useful.

The Perfume Parlour was in Ebenezer Place; but is now a kiosk at West Lakes.

Perfume Empire at Colonnades and Marion carry all the usual suspects; ditto Perfume Connection at Marion and Harbour Town.

For those who make the occasional trip to Melbourne, then 'Paint and Powder' in the Royal Arcade is a must visit.

Just on La Profumeria in Regent Arcade - I was walking past today, and it seems to have taken a step (maybe two) down market. Also, not the usual staff on duty - whether the store has changed hands or the principal is on holidays I do not know - but a change of ownership may explain the change in market position.

My experience with a SA at Paint and Powder is far from pleasant. I found one of them extremely rude and unprofessional. Too bad for them. They lost someone who's surely a prolific fragrance buyer.

The thing with PnP is, whilst they differentiate themselves wonderfully from M/DJ's borg-like range, they hate the Internet. Their prices just aren't competitive and they know it, which is they aren't willing to enter online retailing. The SA at Royal Arcade actually said to me, 'we don't mind people sampling heaps, we just get snotty when people sample here then buy online. They have no idea what they're really buying.'

    Top attitude, love.

    Hello Adelaideans,

(Finally) DJs in Rundle Mall are carrying a fair swathe of the Bond No 9 fragrances. I asked how long they'd had them and the answer was 'about a month'.

So, if you're in town for the sales, take the opportunity for a sniff.

Also - no one here has mentioned Mecca Cosmetica at Burnside Village - home to Serge Lutens and Comme de Garcons and a number of others - and informed and professional staff (and at the price, why wouldn't they be?)

    Bump.

Just got back from National Pharmacies in Gawler Place. And it must be the only store in Adelaide where you can try three versions of Opium pH - the EDT, the EDP and the 'de Chine' which is available in both the standard bottle, and the fancy re-fillable bottle.

As always a good range available in the store - although at full tote odds (members get a discount I believe?).

Also, Pefume Empire at both Noarlunga and Marion have some additional sales on at the moment, if you were looking for some weekend sniffing.

    omg,

When I was in store, all the Bond No. 9 fragrances were on display on the 'main' fragrance counter - the one on the western side of the store, kind of opposite the Chanel stand.

I still haven't tried them. They are certainly still in stock - they have the stock against the wall, and a number of tester bottles at the counter. There are so many, it's difficult to know where to start.

    Good luck in the exams.

    Bump.

Just for the record, La Profumeria in Regent Arcade has now closed (their closing down sale prices were still more than online prices); and of course My Chemist on KWS closed ages ago.

Perfume Empire were carrying much less stock (signs of the GFC I'm sure) - but you'd expect they'd be packed to the gills for Christmas trading.

DJs selection continues to improve - a number of Penhaligon's, and the Van Cleef & Arpels 'Collection Extraordinaire', the Armani Prive's; etc.

EDIT: La Profumeria are going to operate as an online store: http://www.laprofumeria.com.au/

The new Mecca Cosmetica is open in City Cross (at the Rundle Mall end). Not a big range of fragrances, but obviously brands that you won't find anywhere else in the CBD.

    @Mill4r4,

Welcome to Adelaide. Rundle Mall is the place - for fragrances look at both Myer and David Jones; the Mecca Cosmetic store in the City Cross Arcade; and the National Pharmacies chemist in Gawler Place. Also, a Discount Chemist Warehouse in the basement below David Jones. Be prepared to be astounded by local retail prices. Enjoy.

It's such a shame about the market being dominated by chemists and larger department stores. I understand that they have the buying power. But just like the wine retail industry, at the core, it's being run by accountants.

@BCarter - I see where you're coming from - but I actually think it's the accountants of the small perfume retailers. We've lost Perfurme Empire from the suburbs; and the Perfume Connection and La Profumeria from the City. At the end of the day, their retail prices are substantially more than online prices - unless you're faced with an 'emergency' purchase, I'd be hard pressed to think why anyone would purchase retail.

This is true! What about the viability of a store that solely retails boutique products? Rather than have items that the consumer may compare with large retailers, a whole different line of products is presented.

I think that's where Mecca Cosmetica comes in. I don't get to the Burnside store very often, but I understand from Kal and OMG that the range there isn't what it used to be. The new store in the City carries only a couple of handfuls of fragrance. There used to be a Jo Malone boutique in Unley - which I didn't even know existed.....

  25. #25

    Default Re: Adelaide, Australia

I think the Jo Malone boutique is still there ?

I went to the Mecca store in City Cross and the range was approximately similar to the one in Burnside. Oh well, better than nothing.

They got Byredo, Serge Lutens (they got jeaux de peau !), CdG and some other things.

OMG - Kal tells me the Jo Malone boutique closed at the beginning of the year. I haven't been to see if they've re-opened. Maybe they would relocate to the new Burnside Village - but I don't know why you'd close in the meantime.

@ laph - regrettably you won't find anything in Adelaide that you don't have in Sydney. Our DJs and Myer's range is smaller than you have; and we have none of the smaller specialist outlets. You may find shop assistants a bit friendlier to talk with? My post #20 is still a fair summary of the CBD.

When will you be here - in case we have late updates for you?
