Default SCENTS OF THE DECADE DAY -- 6/26

Scent synchronization days are always such fun that I thought maybe we could do them by decades, too - i.e., Scent Sync Day of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. except not pick a particular scent but any scent that made its debut during a certain decade and was "the rage". * Maybe do one a week until we get to 2000 or so...Hmmmm?

Sounds like a winner to me! And keep our choices secret until it is time to reveal and find out who your scent twin of the day is! All for it! Thanks for the idee fabuleuse.

Fab idea, Blue! I'm game! [smiley=cheesy.gif]

If you're in doubt about a scent's age, click "Directory", there you can do scent search (also by the launch year! [smiley=smiley.gif]

It would be a good idea to set a date and make a list of scents from the chosen decade in advance so everyone has enough time to pick the one they're going to wear.

Fabulous link, Wolf! *My thought is to include as many people as possible since there would be a bigger selection of scents. *If someone doesn't have a certain, then let the rest of us know so someone can send a decant to you - that's half the fun. *We could start a couple of weeks after we decide the decade so there would be time to send or swap decants.

What decade shall we start with?

Well, I thought we started on June 12th, with Apres L'Ondee. :-)

Seriously, we can start with everything before the 20th century.

Also I support your idea about supplying people with decants of the particular scent. It IS part of the fun!!! I wish Marlen went to the Shopping Guide section of the forum and updated the links on where to buy automizers and vials.

It's a great site, very informative. I've printed many of their lists before; in addition to the chronological list there's also an alphabetical one, one where the scents are listed by olfactory groups and other where the scents are listed by brands/houses.

Okay! Tigs, 1880's it is. Jicky (1889) is about the only one I could find during that decade. However, if anyone wants to wear something different that was created during that period, go for it! I'm going to have to cheat a little since I have sample vial of Jicky in a DSH oil version only, but it should get me by.

How about we have the first Scent of the Decade synchronization day on June 24? For the time period 1880-1890. Tigs and Loney, I think one of you may have to post this on top in the announcements since I can't. Is June 24 okay with everyone?

Any Creed fragrances in this decade? I think Fleurs de The Rose Bulgare just squeaks in, right?

What about Floris and Penhaligon's? Does anyone have chronology on Creed, Floris, Penhaligon?

Well, I've been doing some cutting and pasting, and this is what I've pulled from the Basenotes Directory for the 1880's:
    1880
    Acqua Classica Borsari (Borsari)
    Buckingham (Crown Perfumery)
    Crown Fougère (Crown Perfumery)
    Lilac Vegetal (Pinaud)
Violette De Parme (Roger & Gallet)
    Clubman (Truefitt & Hill)
    1882
    Crown Court Bouquet (Crown Perfumery)
    Fougère Royale (Houbigant)
    1884
    Fleurs d'Italie (Guerlain)
    1888
    Skine ( Guerlain)
    1886
    Crab Apple Blossom (Crown Perfumery)
    Excellence (Guerlain)
    Gallia (Roger & Gallet)
    1889
    Jicky (Guerlain)
    Rêve d'Or (Piver)
    1890
    Newport (original) (Caswell-Massey)
Fleurs de Thé Rose Bulgare (Creed)
    Eau de Quinine (Crown Perfumery)

    eta: Included fragrances from 1890

Blue, have you thought about the frequency? Every Sunday? Every second Sunday? Once a month?

Marks already done is so it saves me a job, but for future reference, if you want to see which fragrances are from a particular year you can use this link

    http://www.basenotes.net/launch/####

    replacing #### with the year.

If you want to search for all the scents in a decade it's a bit more fiddly but possible -- it is best explained in an example.

If you want to find all the scents launched in the 1880's, then take the first three numbers (eg, 188) and use this link

    http://www.basenotes.net/launch/188

so it follow that if you want to find scents from the 1960's you can use

    http://www.basenotes.net/launch/196

If you want to find scents from the 1990's :

    http://www.basenotes.net/launch/199

    and so on.

    Hope thing helps!

As a follow up, if you want to find the scents from a decade, that are not discontinued, then add this to the web address:

    &Availabilty=in+production

(note the incorrect spelling of availability)

so to find 'in production scents from 1880 you would use

    http://www.basenotes.net/launch/188&...=in+production

Woohoo thanks Grant! [smiley=beer.gif] Tigs and all, how about if we do this once a month? That way if anyone doesn't happen to have a scent of a particular decade (which will get easier as we move on) they can send out an SOS and good hearted members will come to the rescue with decants Or, they can simply plan ahead. A month's time should provide enough time to send out any necessary decant. For instance, we'll have the 1890's on August 24, 1900-1910 on September 24, etc.

Who knows? We may learn some interesting points about perfume history, too.

    Once a month sounds good!

    How about 3rd Sunday of each month? It would go like this: 24 June is 1880's, 17 July 1890's, 21 August 1900's, 18 September 1910's, 16 October 1920's, 20 November 1930's, 18 December 1940's, 15 January 1950's, 19 February 1960's, 19 March 1970's, 16 April 1980's, 21 May 1990's and finally 18 June 2000's!

    Does this sound OK?

They're fine by me. And I'm all for some flexibility with the definitions of the decades, too. I remember there was a big debate a few years ago whether the Millenium was actually 2000 or 2001.....but I can't remember the outcome. After all, I plan to remain "Thirty-something" as long as I can ("Thirty-nine", "Thirty-ten", "Thirty-eleven", "Thirty-twelve"......) [smiley=engel017.gif] An eleven-year decade is a snap compared to all that. [smiley=lolk.gif]

Well, it's basically the same thing as that age-old debate "Was there a year 0?" [smiley=rolleyes.gif] I would say the counting starts with 1 (not 0) but that's just me. [smiley=grin.gif]

I think I have Borsari Acqua Classica in my scent book, I'll try to remember to wear it. From the first list I looked at, I had nothing from the 1960s. I easily have the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s covered. lol Scary isn't it when you have enough fragrances to document 100 years of perfumery. [smiley=wink.gif]

    Private Collection PARFUM.
It's so beautiful - green and floral with rose and orange blossom.
The notes are a lot more clear and sparkling and brilliant in the parfum version.
Plus - it's not as overwhelming as spraying it on....
I put it on last night and it's still blossoming gently on my skin.
    A true delight!
