Default An interview with Jean Kerleo

    Financial Times

To me he's first and foremost the nose behind my beloved Yohji but he's also responsible for Patou Sublime and 1000...

Very nice, thanks Tigs! Wouldn't it be nice to meet a perfumer over lunch like that?

Had to change into Yohji after reading the article...

When I tell him it is Joy, he asks, „Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum?š It is the eau de toilette.

šIt‚s very different from the original Joy,š he says, „but I should have recognised it because I created it, in 1984, as a more wearable version of the Joy perfume. Haven‚t you put on something else too?š

"...as a more wearable version of the Joy perfume." So... I'm not the only one who couldn't wear (or appreciate) Joy perfume! Very interesting, but I have to say that I don't find the edt more wearable, and now want to give the parfum another chance.

    Only some deodorant (Dior Addict).

šAh, voila,š he replies, as if this explains everything. „Other scents often confuse me. It happens even with my wife. When she has used hairspray, I do not recognise my own Sublime on her.š

Now this is why I never wear scented products (lotions, deodorants, hairspray, bath soap) that compete with or take away from my fragrances!

As we head up the car park staircase to the exit, I get a strong whiff of cleaning products. „This smell of detergent is used in many cheap perfumes now,š Kerleo says dismissively.

Good to know it's not my imagination!

Thanks, Tig! Really enjoyed the article.

Excellent article. How I would have loved to be standing next to him as he worked on his masterpieces, even all three years for 1000. To witness a work of art from the beginning to the finished product would be an incredible experience. Training - yes, but there is undoubtedly a gift involved.

I found it so sympathetic that he took the interviewer's Joy for Bulgari Femme and admitted he doesn't sometimes even recognize Sublime on his wife when other products confuse him!
