    Default Fragrance categories just for us.

    Do we Basenoters need our own categories? Here's a few of the industry-standard categories and why I don't like then:

    Niche - For us, some niche houses like Creed for example, really feel more mainstream. NIche implies rare and obscure; words I wouldn't use to describe Creed, for example.

    Designer - Could this be more meaningless? Designer juice ranges from $25 Azzarro to $625 Clive Christian. We need to brak this category out a bit.

    Mass Market - The Basenotes Awards puts products like Old Spice and Brut in this category. I would add some of the lower quality Designers here too.

    Car enthusiasts don't settle for the industry standard "sports car" category, they talk about roadsters, GTs, etc. I think we've got a similar situation.

    Being somewhere between newbie and green sophomore, I have no idea what the categories should be. But we can do better than those three right?

    I concur. The real task is developing the classification that everyone can agree on, less use, on the boards and in discussion.

    Let's see, bottom to top:

    1. Mass market;
    2. Department store chic;
    3. Unbearably hip;
    4. High-end;
    5. Niche house frags;
    6. Impossibly recherché, exotic, and prohibitively expensive.

    Can you guys come up with examples of each?

    Too bad I'll be too far out of internet range to see the replies. Maybe I'll subscribe to the thread and read it when I get back...

    NUSL - Niche, Unisex, short lasting

    DOVOB - Designer on verge of Bankruptcy
    DSWONCLI - Designer, so weird only Nicheans could like it

    I like where your going with that; breaking out the big classes into sub-categories.
