It was named in an an old article by Susan Irvine about perfume names through the ages. I think it was a 30's perfume. That's all I know. I'd love a bottle though.

And tariq, you named the three YSL candles/room sprays! How I miss Feu de Santal.

A friend of mine bought it solely because of its name, without trying it first! Luckily he liked it a lot when he started using it.

    Eternity &
Obsession - these both had to be taken, and Calvin was the fastest, the latter juice has the added bonus of being great as well.

Vol de Nuit (and Joop!´s english namesake nightflight)

Acier Aluminium - Sounds very intriguing although I´m not sure what they mean, steel-aluminun?

Ambre Canelle - very often stuff just sounds better in french, lovely language even though it´s´main representatives sometimes aren´t .

Safari - One of my all time favourite frags and both name, bottle and concept corresponds amazingly with the juice. The print ads with Bridget Hall and that adorable lion cub didn´t exactly suck either.

Rive Gauche - stylish name, stylish scent, stylish bottle.

And not a fragrance name but a line from the lacoste red campaign:

Style on skin - I´ve always thought the responsible copywriter should get an award, it´s just such a fantastic tagline, simple and so efficient.

I miss it too Concord, this trio is perfect for every mood, i wish if YSL Beaute would bring it back again , it was launched in 1998 for Yves's 60th birthday.

I have a few little of FdS at the bottom of the bottle ...sniffing it from time to time...they're great for personal use as well not only for the room.. so unique juices..

Well, I have to repeat some of the suggestions that have been made, as they are, well, right . I love abstract names that are almost as transporting in themselves as the frags promise to be ..

    L'Ombre dans l'Eau
    Apres l'Ondee
    L'Heure Bleue
    Voleur de Roses
    Ce Soir ou Jamais
    L'Eau de Navagateur
    La Chasse au Papillons
    Passage d'Enfer

(and yes, I do think Guerlain and L'Artisan do well on the naming front ... )

I'm sure I'll be thinking of more all day ...

You've all posted such good ones already. Wish I'd thoght of plenty of those.

Iquitos. I love the name. Don't know what it means, but the sound is good enough for me. Keeps me wondering who would think to name a scent with that sound and then who up the management chain approved the decision.

I've got to wear it more often so that someone out there will ask what I'm wearing and I'll get to say the word instead of all this talking to myself with it.

I bet "vomit" even sounds good in French. Most of my favorite names are French and I don't even know what they mean. Two English ones that I like are:
Opium - Just daring to name a mass market product after an illicit narcotic.
    Agent Provocateur - Provocative?!
