    Hermes= air-mays
    L'Artisan= luh-ar-tih-sahn
    Guerlain= goor-lahn

    Sorry if the goor thing is a little confusing. goooor. Whatever. I'm quite sure about those, but one can never be TOO sure so people def correct me if I'm wrong. Also, Ment, there was an awesome pronunciation thread a couple of months ago you might wanna try to dig up. It covered just about everything.

    that thread is definately the place to go, but I actually think Guerlain has an "air" rather than "ooor", but then again, I don't speak a lick of french.

    I think Guerlain has the "air" as well. Although I am not sure myself, I was thinking that the french word for war, guerre, is pronounced g-air.

    Hermes is properly written with an accent above the E (`) which connotes a short E sound. I would pronounce it air-mez. The -es should be pronounced the same way you pronounce the letter S when you say the alphabet- ess- but with a slightly shorter S sound.

    I wish I could find the old pronounciation thread; there were all sorts of perfumes covered in there.

    Both L'Artisan and Guerlain are very difficult to pronounce for a native English speaker, they contain sounds not available in English.
    L'Artisan should sound more or less like larteezhan, and Guerlain should be pronounced for the first syllable like the first part of "guer-illa" and "lain"... well, see my first sentence, LOL.

    I think I was somewhat close to Zaroffs pronunciation.

    I say L'Artisan , Lahr-tuh-zahn with a soft 'r'

    Guerlain, Gerr - lai - n , with a rolled off n

    but, ha, I pronounce Hermes: Her-meez

    You seem to always have interesting discussion mentallo, thanks.

    This is the link to the pronunciation website:

    http://www.nuance.com/realspeak/demo/

    Unfortunately, it's down being upgradied. But keep checking back. It's a lot easier than trying to explain how French sounds with weird "phonetic" spellings. If you haven't heard a lot of French, you won't make sense of them. Listen to the .wav files when the software's back online.

    You click on the demo, you choose a language, get a screen, type in the word(s) you want to hear, click again, and voilà!

    L'Artisan - lar (from larva) + ti (from Tibet) + zan (from Zanzibar or zander)
    lar-ti-zan - lartizan

    Guerlain - ghe (from ghetto) + r (from rum) + len (from lens or lenght)
    ghe-r-len - gherlen

    Hermes is not difficult to pronounce, but it's harder to describe it through connections with english words... You pronounce the H, but it's an aspirated H; the s at the end is very light...

    Maybe these links will help you a little;

    Danke! That's a great demonstration.

    Having studied and spoken Spanish, French, and some Italian and German, it's fun to hear how terrible pronunciation can be, and a pleasant surprise to hear somebody do it well.

    One thing you can count on, with rare exceptions: if you're relying on someone at a typical fragrance counter for pronunciation, you'll be very mistaken. I generally have to "dumb down" my pronunciation just so they know what I'm asking for. I think Shifts made a similar comment.

    And as Zaroff says, there are sounds in French (or in any language) that are very difficult to describe in one's own tongue without knowledge of linguistics, for instance, and if you don't have that sound in your language, chances are you'll butcher it unless you have a great ear. But it's not the end of the world; if you're lucky, someone may think that you have a cute accent.
