Default Webcam - really stinky Corpse Flower about to bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

For those of you interested in really fragrant (okay, really stinky and I do mean putrid) flowers, check out the link below.

Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), also known as the Corpse Flower, is about to bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in New York. It bears a 4 to 6 ft. (or higher) flower head that "produces a revolting stench of putrefaction", similar to a decomposing corpse. In the wild, the odor attracts carrion beetles and sweat bees, for pollination.

The blooming of Titan Arum is a big event, as it's very difficult to get it to bloom in cultivation, and the plant is rapidly disappearing from the wild because of unscrupulous collectors.

If you're interested in following the bloom progression from home, the following link is to a webcam of the plant, updated every 30 seconds. It's in a greenhouse, and as it's currently nighttime here as I write this, the greenhouse is naturally dark, but dawn is just a few hours away.

Someone needs to make a perfume out of this.

This should be Frederic Malles next release.

    First "Carnal Flower".

    Then "Corpse Flower"

If someone included it in a perfume wouldn't you be stalked by carrion beatles and bees....waiter I'll have the Jackson-Triggs proprietors grand reserve VQA chardonnay, oh and some bug spray, I'll order appetizers when we've killed off some of these beetles.
Can anyone remember love? It's like trying to summon up the smell of roses in a cellar. You might see a rose, but never the perfume.

I'd imagine it would be the fragrance of choice for Gil Grissom.

Here are a couple of additional photos of the soon to bloom flower - the first is to scale against an adult, showing the bloom head's enormous size:

This series of three color photos shows the stages of bloom (actual flower bloom):

    Talking It's starting to open!!!!

Yes, the Corpse Flower is starting to open!!! The spathe is starting to open up from the spadix - the photos are beautiful.

I've been following the blog, as I haven't been able to get to the plant in person yet, but follow the webcam link to see this amazing beauty. Apparently, the flower hasn't released any of its putrid fragrance yet, so this is really fascinating. And most of the visitors to the greenhouse seem more interested in experiencing the flower's reputed stench, rather than it's amazing appearance and botany.
