Wink How do you feel when a fellow Basenoter outbids you?

A remark that I have lately done, spending quite a lot of time browsing for some rarities, is that members ot the forum use exactrly the same nickname in Ebay , so you can encounter them when bidding!
To answer my own question:No hard feelings

(and I strongly insist that Escada Casual Friday is an excelent choice and I must not be greedy,I have already a small bottle ).
It's never too late to mend.

There used to be an unwritten rule amongst Basenoters that we didn't bid against each other. With the size of the place now (as compared to then) that is pretty much gone now. I will say though that if I ever run across some of the people who used to follow that rule, I won't bid against them. This does happen on occasion.

Anyone who is a serious bidder will place only a single bid seconds before the end of the auction. Thus, serious bidders will have no way of knowing who the other serious bidders are until after the end of the auction.

There was a well-known Basenoter who sniped me at the last second on a bottle of a hard-to-find fragrance. I wasn't a happy camper!
Are you not entertained??? Is this not why you are here??

I think "well, at least now I know whom to PM for a decant." Much better than having it go to a stranger

I seldom get outbidded either from Basenoters or others because I use esnipe. check google for esnipe, best thing since sliced bread.

If I see its another Basenoter, I will stop fighting them. CoL and I were going after the same thing and once I saw it was him, I let him know he bid first so I wasn't going to run up the price on him. He didn't win, but it wasn't me screwing him over.

And personally, I think sniping programs and such are not playing fair.

If I want something, I don't mess around with trying to play tricky games or screw over another bidder if they don't have a crutch like that.

If I want it, I bid like I want it. If they want it more, they win.

I never bid against a person if I realize that it's a fellow Basenoter. I have too many frags as it is anyways. I can however say that I've been outbid by one particular Basenoter three freaken times in a row. It was as if she was tracking my bids!!!

This is because you are not a serious bidder, for you bidding is a game. When I bid, I am not playing a game.

Speaking of Ebay, where is Uncle Griff? I don't think I have seen a post from him in many months.

The way you put that sounds a little harsh, but I think you're basically right. I didn't used to use a snipe program, but the truth it's an easy way to bid your exact top price without getting lured into a "just $2 more" auction frenzy and overpay for an item, and also to prevent other bidders from doing the same. I use a sniper and I win some and I lose some - either way I'm happy with my final bid.

BTW, I'm not a big fragrance bidder - almost all my ebay scent buying is the 'buy it now' variety.

Whenever I bid on something on Ebay I wait until the last couple of hours and as my max bid I place exactly as much as I'm willing to spend. If it goes over that than too bad, like if I see something for $2 and I'm willing to pay a maximum of $25, i put a max bid of $25 and then wait to get an email telling me if I won or not. If someone is willing to pay more than me than good on them.

When you lose out in an auction, it's because someone else was willing to pay more than you were. That's what it means to have an auction. The details of how and when the winning bid comes in are irrelevant to the justice of the situation.

This is why I'm baffled by objections to sniping programs like those in this thread. There are plenty of good game theory reasons for using a sniping program. For example, why attract attention to an auction by bidding before the very end? That can only drive up the price.

As others have already made clear, you will be immune to sniping if you simply place a bid that is your true maximum. If you do that and no one else is willing to pay more, you will win the auction.

I've won 99% of my bid, but I have neve bid on a fragrance,I'd like to sample them, buy a decant or just get them online or at my local dept store or sephora. Adding shipping and handling, the differences between buying locally and through the internet amounted to almost the same retail. I go for online stores if I want to get some hard to find scent such as Ho Hang,Spazio,Le Dandy,Sybaris, etc.

I gues this is off topic but I do not want to start another thread. Can someone rate my wardrobe? I'm getting Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin and Terre D'Hermes this weekend and I'm going to snatch the last bottle of Nicole Miller Men at my local perfume shoppe.

Well, there's two ways. You can be negative about it and hope that the fragrance turns out to be really bad, or be positive about it, and hope that ,at least,he's gonna write a good review about it on Basenotes.

I've been outbid by a fellow Basenoter, and I emailed him to tell him that if I had to lose, I'd rather lose to him.

I bid my maximum. If someone wants it more, more power to them.

About 2 months ago, I was outbid (sniped) with 1 second left to go bidding for tea for two by a member. I wasn't angry at all, and actually completed a swap (not for the tea for two) with him 2 days later. You can't get mad at something like that. That's kind of like when you're playing blackjack at a casino, and you get mad at someone for not hitting. You have to play your own game and not expect everyone else to have the same philosophy or rules that you do.

I use sniping programs as well. If you are afraid of the sniping programs, put your max bid in at first. If your sniped, it doesn't matter, because the sniper went over your max anyway.

Maybe we should put our ebay userids in our sig line or something so we know who the hell we all are.

Forget all that, what the hell is on Ebay that everyone is bidding for in the first place?!
