these alpha men you mention, NJ's own 5 foot tall Bruce Willis especially have every thing done for them. They have a team that obsesses over them so it's hard to guess what they wear but it isn't cheap and the markup before Bruce, and I'm just using him as an example, gets the bill must be astronomical. I wonder what he's left with after he gets 30 million for a movie and pays everyone working for him.

I think the English have their own breed of Alpha Male and my guess is that they would wear the sauve, Dunhill for Men, from 1934.

Hard to believe Dunhill is that old. My husband wears it, and it's magnificent.

Terre d'Hermes (takes major balls, IMHO)

    Santos

    Kouros

    Hammam Bouquet

    Yatagan

    Portos

Declaration (Very woody and dry and not for everyone -- makes a real statement on its own. Not for the meek.)

Antaeus (Unadulterated scrotum sweat just bottled up in a Savile Row suit.)

M7 (Once you get over the sweet topnotes, that is.)

Van Cleef & Arpels (Original formulation.)

Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels (Original formulation.)

    Burberry's for Men (Original

    Vetiver by Guerlain (old formulation)

    Fahrenheit

    Basala

Noir Epices (takes a really brave soul -- male or female -- to pull this one off. Just remember that Catherine Deneuve favors this scent, and she (IMHO) has bigger, lower hanging cojones than even Sean Connery.)

Joop! (yes, you heard me -- nice on the right gutsy person; awful otherwise)

    Millesime Imperial

    Jockey Club

It has been about 6 months since I originally posted this question. I've tested most of the fragrances suggested and these are the ones I've found best matched what I was looking for:

    - Santos Concentrťe (1982) by Cartier

    - Polo Crest (1991) by Ralph Lauren

    - Yatagan (1976) by Caron

    - Polo (1978) by Ralph Lauren

    - Bel Ami (1986) by HermŤs

    - Cumming (2004) by Alan Cumming

    - Givenchy Gentleman (1974) by Givenchy

These fragrances now are highly valued fragrances in my wardrobe.

I wondered why a 9 year old thread was digged out of the deep but read through it. When I came to the recent postings I was glad, because it might schow how perspectives in nearly 10 years may change. And within these view posts I have a clue in which direction this may tend to go.

I'll contribute to this discussion with the following suggestions:
    Antonio Puig Quorum
    Azzaro pour homme (original)
    Lauder for men
    Givenchy Gentleman (original)
    Boss Nį One

In no particular order and not all of them I like.

+1-This is said in a facetious manner to a degree(I think) but I think it's really contingent on the times and cultures. Will shoot off 3 cases of people who would be considered in this category(by my estimation):
    1. Barry Diller: bumped into him a few times when I was doing my undergraduate studies in the good ol' USA at his offices in Santa Monica when he held court and owned a stake in QVC. His cologne? Nothing.
    2. David Geffen: my female cousin and I had lunch at a restaurant called Le Dome(when it was still open) on Sunset Boulevard and we were placed a few tables from him, but I caught a gentle waft of his scent. His cologne? Nothing.
    3. Brandon Tartikoff: we were vacationing in San Francisco and had a suite at the Ritz-Carlton and two suites down we ran into "The Wonder Boy of NBC" at the time in the hallway as he had trouble opening the doors to his room(he was with his wife). Seeing the opportunity, I rushed to get his autograph for my female cousin(as she wanted to become an entertainment lawyer at the time). He signed the autograph and wrote, "Dear "so and so". Don't go into the television industry." His cologne? Nothing.
Eastern world: Met the previous president of SK who used to be the "big dog" at Hyundai as my mother got an invite through my aunt in 2007 and he wore no scent. However, I could smell the stitching of the fabric of his suit. Alpha females I think would make for an interesting thread. I wonder what Hilary would wear?

Yes, being serious with my post but a little sarcastic... But grandfather was an old fashion farmer here in Costa Rica... Tough and old school... If he knew I'm wearing perfume today he'll slap me in the face...

And Hilary, that one is easy... She wears Antaeus and on the weekends Kouros... slaps Bill from time to time as well...

PS... nice to read from a fellow lawyer...

Mi amigo, "hold court" is an idiom which refers to a person who is surrounded by subordinates and/or fans, etc. He along with a handful ran "Hollywood" and still do but they've mellowed with age. And yeah, my grandfather wore nothing as well and he would've probably slapped me silly if I was wearing a cologne as a child. Nice joke btw on the Hilary reference as it instigated a train of thought of sorts. Muchos gracias, mi amigo. In finance btw but that dishonorable title(jk)of abogado? goes to my old man and one of my brothers. "Waiting on Benny Blanco..."(Big lover of films here).
