    Default Imitation Acqua Di Gio?

I was at this department store today and I saw they had this bottle with the discount colognes. It looked exactly like a bottle of Acqua Di Gio, same shape with the frosted glass. As for labeling though, it just had a big G on it and in the bottom it said "based upon the fragrance Acqua Di Gio". It also only cost 11 dollars.

So I thought, this is interesting. I sprayed some on my left wrist, then I went over to the designer cologne counter and sprayed Armani ADG on my right wrist. And my conclusion, was, the smell throughout, longevity, everything was exactly the same lol.

I don't even like ADG, but I found this kind of funny. I would have thought there'd be copyright laws or something preventing this?

It's possible that some copy scents are exactly the same, but I haven't come across them yet.

I used to think the same as you about a number of copy scents when I first started out - but it became clear that when I gave blind tests to an expert in the office, he would immediately respond "Fake Eternity" etc, even though I couldn't tell it from the real thing. As my expererience increased, scents that I'd previously thought as exactly the same copies, suddenly seemed totally different. The few I'd bought I threw in the trash.

There's a Wal-Mart brand "Classic Match" w/ a version of ADG. Their bottle is frosted & has a big G on it (it says Geau but the eau are pretty small). Maybe the dept store you were at carries the Classic Match brand too.

As a sidenote, my friend Kellie loves ADG & wears that Classic Match version.

I find the Classic Match versions usually all have a common underlying note which I don't notice at first, but which I quickly start to hate and detest the more I sniff them.

That might be it, I saw it at Zellers, which is a Canadian department store which is kind of lower end similar to Wal-Mart.

I detect this note as well. It's very metallic and thin. But for the price you can't really be picky.

Yes! I noticed that too once when I was testing their versions of both Polo Blue & Polo Black. I sprayed some from each tester onto each hand & walked around for a bit. I dected that horrid note after a bit on each hand. Yuck!!!

I wouldnt be surprised if someone tried to rip it off. AdG isnt exactly cheap - it retails for $50.

Sometimes knock-offs smell better. I never smell the base note, metallic stuff people run on about. My girlfriend doesn't smell it either, which is good.

The only bad thing about some knock-offs is that they don't have lasting power.

For example, Dollar Tree Jean Philippe Paris Acqua Di Gio doesn't last very long at all. You might as well carry the stuff around with you.

Why? Sometimes a company will stumble upon a new fragrance while trying to duplicate another. Sometimes that new one will be even better, but very similar to what they tried to reproduce.

    An example is Akthar Noir.

This is not a counterfeit or fake. They are knockoffs. They are not selling the fragrances claiming to be the real thing.

It is a "smellalike" scent from a company specialising in these things. They offer their own fragrances "based" on popular brands. Some of them are quite good.

I think two of the better companies are:

    Belcam: http://www.belcamshop.com/collection...t-best-sellers

    and

    Parfums de Coeur:

Design Imposters scents are very good copies. I think their Armani Code and Unforgivable smell just like the real thing.

Perry Ellis Red 360║ is pretty close to AdG, but a little lighter in scent.
