Default Best popular designer frag since 2000

I'm tremendously enjoying L'Eau bleue d'Issey just now. From the moment I smelled this at a perfumery/drugstore I knew I wanted it really badly. This rarely happens to me with more or less current designer frags. Burberry Brit is another. Anyway, I'd like to know what you take to be the single best popular (among the general population, which means niche's are out!) men's fragrance since about 2000.

For me those two alternate between first and second, right now it's Issey

apart from just personally loving it for it's herbal component, I admire this for daring to be different - rosemary is not the hippest ingredient these days - but still, to me at least, utterly wearable. It's got character, class and beauty. Plus, i love the sleek minimalism of my "vaporisateur de voyage" (that sounds so much more poetic than travel spray)

It depends: if you see Comme des Garcons as popular designers -

    Avignon http://www.basenotes.net/ID26122019.html

    otherwise: Rochas Lui

2nd alternative: Hermes Jardins en Mediterranée

    edit:
if these are too far away from 'popular' I would be happy to mention Armani pour Homme and Emporio Armani He, but together with AdiG they are from before 2000. While later Armani's might -smellwise- suit the bill, they are so thin you smell them for half an hour only. That's not what I call a man's cologne! Some Guerlaina may be popular but are not designer's.

You could make a case for YSL Body Kouros

    Dior Homme

    Terre d'Hermes

Helmut Lang Cuiron is since 2000, right?

    Escada Magnetism

My favourite of the rather popular designer fragrances since 2000 is probably Armani Code/Black Code.

You guys are listing off stuff that I'd be willing to bet that pretty much 0% of the average 1 or 2 cologne owning crowd would ever have heard of.

Stuff like Ralph Lauren, Armani, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Davidoff, Hugo Boss, D&G, Calvin Klein, Lacoste - off the top of my head I'm sure there are more, these are the kinds of brands I would consider "popular designer fragrance" companies. A majority of people, even if they don't use cologne have heard of most of these brands.

But ones like YSL, Helmut Lang, Rochas, Hermes, even Escada I would be willing to bet that a huge majority of the population have never ever heard of - for fragrances at least.

And Acqua Di Gio came out way before 2000 didn't it?

Does Guerlain count as designer? If so, L'Instant for me.

Otherwise, I'd be struggling quite frankly.

My faves in this order ...

    1) Burberry Brit

    2) YSL M7 Fresh

    3) Escada Magnetism

    4) Armani Code

    5) Terre de Hermes

(actually, all are 2004 and after)

Honorable mentions to Burberry London (new) and Varvatos Vintage. Neither made it for me due to extremely poor longevity.

Tough question. Must with Rive Gauche, though.

    Latrelle: "What?"
Peggy: "Brother Boy has tried to kill himself. He jumped out of his bedroom window."
Latrelle: "Isn't he only on the second floor?"
Peggy: "Yes, but he hit his head on a lawn gnome."

I think that the logic is flawed in this thread as I said before.

I think the thread starter meant by "popular designer fragrances" something popular with the general public. These might work if the treadstarter meant "popular designer fragrances on Basenotes".

    Gucci PH
    Azzaro Visit
    Rive Gauche

none of these are even close to what I would consider "popular designer fragrances". There are probably 200 different fragrances we could come up with that sell better than any of these in most large markets.

Yeah, I did mean popular as in somethign average fragrance buyers buy - but I'm not really certain myself where a house like YSL stands in that regard. In fact there could be national differences. Any middle brow German bloke with a decent education and a bit of taste will have heard of YSL and have some awareness of at least some of their perfumes. That might be different in the US, where other designers are prevalent. But this problem aside I'm actually quite enjoying this thread. It will help me focus on some designer scents I have neglected in favor of seeking out the rare and unusual.
