Default The Independent's 50 Best Scents

I'm a little surprised that no one's mentioned the guide to the 50 best scents that the Independent, a British newspaper, ran recently.

The scents, grouped into women's classics, women's newcomers, unisex scents, men's classics and men's newcomers were chosen and reviewed by a panel including Chandler Burr and Roja Dove, who has a perfumerie concession at Harrods.

The men's classics, in no particular order, were:

    Pour un Homme, Caron
    Beli Ami, Hermes
    Armani pour Homme, Armani
    Kouros, YSL
    Antaeus, Chanel
    Egoiste, Chanel
    Aramis, Aramis
    Givenchy Gentleman, Givenchy
    Mouchoir de Monsieur, Guerlain
    Pour Homme, YSL

    The newcomers:

    Prada, Prada
    X for Men, Clive Christian
    Vetiver Extraordinaire, Dominique Ropion
    Arpege pour Homme, Lanvin
    Terre d'Hermes, Hermes
    The Brun, Jean-Charles Brosseau
    Polo Black, Ralph Lauren
    Encre Noir, Lalique
    Homme, Dior
    Gucci pour Homme, Gucci

    The unisex scents:

    Eau Sauvage, Dior
    Comme 2, Comme des Garcons
    Vetiver, Guerlain
    Eau d'Hermes, Hermes
Sel de Vetiver, The Different Company
    Diorella, Dior
    Escentric, Escentric Molecule
    Paprika Brasil, Hermes
    Eau de Campagne, Sisley
    Ambre Narguile, Hermes

    Any views on their choices?

P.S. Hi to All: this is my first posting. Two weeks ago I was a splash-a-little-eau-d'Issey-on-when-you-go-out type. Then I read the piece in the Independent. Then I found this site... I wonder what size wardrobe I'll end up with?

Hi - do you have a link to this article?

Are those those fragrances supposed to be 'the best' or rather the most popular?

First off, welcome to the forum!

The listings are interesting and, no, I had not seen them before from this source. There are truly many classics listed, along with some notable missings. Where are Acqua di Parma, Chanel Pour Monsieur, or Patou Pour Homme? In the unisex category, I would take Monsieur de Givenchy over Eau Sauvage, but that's a bit of hair-splitting. I agree with several of the new releases, namely Dior Homme, Terre d'Hermes, and X for Men, while not agreeing with the listing of either Prada or Polo Black.

Yes, I also wonder what type of wardrobe you'll end up with! Have fun!

    Hi phibess

The newspaper's website is www.independent.co.uk, but I don't think the piece is available online.

The scents were billed as the best rather than the most popular, but how they were chosen isn't explained.

Thanks Snaporaz, I checked Independent's website and tried to find it with no success.

Just wondering what might have been the criteria for selecting the 'best' 50 - no Creed, Lutens, L'Artisan, MPG..among those you mentioned..hmm

Hi Jeff and Magnnum. Thanks for your welcomes.

Glad you approved of the Dior Homme and Terre d'Hermes, Jeff. They're my first two purchases! Were you surprised by the absence of Creeds? No Green Irish Tweed?

A concession is a shop within a shop, btw.

    A welcome from me too!

Interesting to see that Escentric was listed when all it is, is pure Iso E Super.

You lost me after ".....and reviewed by a panel including Chandler Burr"

I am sorry but X for men? Polo Black? Terre D'Hermes (good but hardly a candidate for a "best" scent category)? I would like to read Burrs reviews of these.

The list has a slight air of 'being the best because that's what they say they are'. There's nothing on there that I'd consider to be outstandingly great; one has to wonder how many frags they actually considered before making the list - did they have their minds already made up based on the most advertised and therefore 'obviously' the most popular?

That's not to say it's a duff list - there's just lots of room for improvement.

Welcome and thanks for the interesting list. I think I'll take it as seriously as when some general interest publication does a "Best Rock Bands of all Time" compilation. I mean, they don't even have Unforgivable on the list

This strikes me as a personal selection from among a generally mainstream subset of everything that is available. The is no shortage of omissions or questionable elevations. As just one example, Philosykos really should be on the unisex list.
