Smile On a rather trivial note

Is it just me or has anyone else had fantasies of walking along a deserted beach and finding a wacking great lump of ambergris washed up, from which one then proceeds (after many efforts) to create a fragrance unequalled in over a century?

Actually, has anyone out there ever got their hands on some ambergris? There still are sperm whales out there, after all, and they still must cough this stuff up!

You can buy ambergris tincture from this Italian company:

Here is a New Zealand ambergris company:

This post is making me laugh.

When I was a kid, I had a book about whales. There was a fairly brief mention of ambergris, and that it was used in the perfume industry. I remember walking along the beach at Coney Island (I grew up in Brooklyn, NY) looking for a chunk of the stuff.

This was well before any kind of fragrance interest - I must have been 6?

Every time I see the ocean, I think about ambergris - or rather, the specific page in the book. I bet I still have that book kicking around somewhere.
