Default Choosing a cologne for my boyfriend

Hello - i'm new, and i have to confess that i know very little about fragrances. However - i love them, and love smelling good. One of my favourite compliments to recieve is 'wow, you smell great'.

Anyway, i'm looking for a cologne for my boyfriend and i need help from all you experts. He currently wears Polo blue, but i find it so generic and it disappears on him in about 20secs (i'm thinking it could even be a fake). I'm looking for something a little stronger, something he can wear at night or with a suit.

He's young (26), sporty, not overly masculine and says he likes citrus and fresh smelling fragrances.

    I've been considering the following:

    - Chanel Allure Sport or Egoiste
    - Rochas Man
    - JPG Le male
    - Dior fahrenheit
    - Armani Mania

What do you think/recommend? Thanks so much

    hm, perhaps,

Chanel Allure Homme Sport, Terre d'Hermes, Bvlgari Pour Homme.

You should be able to test these pretty easily to see if they fit what you are looking for.

Good luck, and Welcome to Basenotes!!

    Hi Phe,
    first of all welcome aboard!
My 1st advice is, why don't you go with your BF to test some juices with him and maybe explore what you both really enjoy?
About the juices you mentioned, well
Chanel Allure Sport: if you moan about Polo blue to be generic, allure sport isn't less generic at all.
Rochas Man and JPG Le Male: consider that both are heavy oriental juices with gourmand sweet hints, so I don't think they would be suitable for a "not overly masculine" and that "likes citrus and fresh smelling fragrances" guy.
Dior Fahrenheit and Armani mania lays in the middle but both aren't citrusy at all...
To widen a bit your choice, why don't you consider stuff like
    Egoiste Platinum
    YSL Live Jazz
    Terre d'Hermes
    L'eau par Kenzo
    Acqua di Parma Colonia Assoluta
    ...

I would get him a collection of mini bottles or purchase some decants of fragrances from one of the many on basenotes who sell them. Fragrance is really a personal thing, for me anyway. While I gladly accept input from the women in my life, I would not want someone to purchase me an entire bottle with the expectation that I would use it. I would feel pressured. But a collection of samples I would view as fun.

Thanks for the ideas. I like the idea of mini bottles or decants, i think i'll try that in some of the fragraces you have suggested.

From your list, I like Fahrenheit best.
What I like and what he may like are worlds apart.
    That mini's/samples recommendation is better!

I would suggest testing the fragrances by yourself, then when you find a few you think he would like, bring him along to try those. That way you can narrow it down to the best ones without him getting too bored.

I'm not familiar with too many citrusy men's colognes, but Eau Sauvage by Dior is quite citrusy and sharp. I wouldn't describe the original Fahrenheit as citrusy or fresh, although one of the variations (Fresh, Summer, 0 Degres) might be right.

perhaps Dolce & Gabbana PH? Pretty good longevity (on me at least) and sillage, wearable in many different situations. Other than that:
    - Bulgari PH
    - Un Jardin sur le Nil (Hermès)
    - L'eau par Kenzo.
    - Chanel pour monsieur (version concentrée)
    (all fresh)
Top 5: Obsession | Eau sauvage | Antaeus | Bel Ami | Platinum Égoïste

Light and distinctive with unique character. Could be worn day and night. Easily Lorenzo Villoresi's Uomo! It's the kind of scent you want to own when you don't have many, it's never out of place and you don't get tired of this natural and somewhat raw aroma. I'm sure he would be very impressed if you bought an unique scent like this to him, and not some Hugo Boss. The 50ml bottle is not that expensive really!

Obviously it's not that easy to test this one

I'd reccommend Terre d' Hermes, but you should just go shopping together! That way you get each other's input before making a decision.
    Lately I've been wearing:
Windsor, Bois de Santal, Original Santal, Elixir, Douro, Endymion, Reflection, Arcus, Marwah

If you like the Bulgari pour Homme, do try Bulgari pour Homme Extreme. It is more citrus and lasts longer. I just like it better.

    Hi Phe

    Welcome to basenotes!

For a 26 year old who wears a suit occasionally - Chanel pour Monsieur Concentree . BTW - I'm quite new here and the advice to sample things together is spot on. I've been receiving decants from various Basenotes sources over the last couple of weeks and it's a real eye-opener - a whole new world.

Allure is so inoffensive, it's practically begging to be worn. My vote's for Allure.

I am a 40 yearl old man I have loads of colognes for different occassions. Somehow my long time favorite for fresh and clean is Gendarme and most women seem to like the scent.

I don't know if you'll be able to find Gendarme in Australia though.

I recently purchased a bottle of Mugler Cologne. Love it so far. Lasts a long time on my skin too.

I am always bringing home little sample vials for my bf. He doesn't care about them because he doesn't love fragrances the way I do. But I force him to try them and then we decide which is best. Of the ones you listed, I think armani mania smells sooooo good!!! my bf has the armani code, which is nothing special at all. But the mania seems really clean and like something a young athlete would wear. I recently got this new sample by lacoste that we are going to try. In the store, it smelled nice as did all the other lacoste fragrances. Maybe look into those too.

I would pick Armani Mania from your list.
In rotation: Greenbriar (new), Silver Mountain Water, Dunhill for Men (1934), Acqua di Parma Colonia, Habit Rouge EDC, Ho Hang, B*Men, Agua Brava

    Hi phe,
My boyfriend wears Touch for Men by Burberry. This is an amazing scent! It is not that heavy but it is still very sexy. It has a unique pepper note in it of some sort but it is very clean. I love it and can't get enough of it; it depends on his chemistry as well though. good luck!

    Yohji 2004
    Mugler Cologne
    Creed New Tabarome
    Antidote

They aren't all that accessible, but, if you do find a way to get some of them.. .

If you're in Sydney you'll find it at the David Jones in the city, the nice one with women's perfume is where they keep all the l'artisan.
