Thread: Benzoin?

    Default Benzoin?

What exactly is Benzoin? Can anyone describe how it smells? And can you name any examples of fragrances that contain a noteworthy amount of Benzoin?

Good question. Also, does anybody know for sure, is fragrance benzoin the same thing as the medical adhesive enhancer/skin protectant spray benzoin? I've always thought it probably was since, ya know, it's all called benzoin and spray benzoin smells pungent, strong and sweet/tart in a resinous kind of way.

According to my Shoyeido Incense book of Koh (incense), Benzoin (Styrax tonkinensis craib and Styrax benzoin dryand), originates in SE Asia, has a sweet, chocolatey, balsamic aroma if from Thailand, and a warm, powdery, sweet aroma if from Indonesia. It's tree sap, it's sold in blocks. I have benzoin EO (Indonesian) and it's a lovely, soft, warm fragrance. Many perfumes have it in their drydown, it's not really a centerpiece sort of smell, more of an anchor.

Google and Wikipedia moments later, I can add to elf's info.

Gum benzoin is aka styrax resin, gotten from the bark of several trees in the Styrax species or maybe that was a genus....

It is primarily benzoic acid, the simplist aromatic carboxylic acid. Gum benzoin is used in perfumes, incense, and medicine.

FYI benzoic acid or it's salts , benzoate, I guess, is used as a preservative, too. Inhibits mold and some bacteria.

Elf, now that you mention it, a sweet chocolate impression seems right for a part of what I recall of the spray stuff, too. It had a certain rich thick smell. LOL, hard to describe.

Default It smells like sexed-up vanilla

And there is a hint of some herbal, almost anise-like note in the background. This is one of my favourites, and has tremendous staying power, even on my dry skin. I have the viscous liquid (I mix a drop in a bit of almond oil and apply it to my skin), and sometimes burn the crystals.
Incidentally--I honestly doubt it is just my personal charm--this scent draws men like a magnet attracts steel filings.

And thus, very caramelly and chocolaty... I love all these benzoin fragrances... Prada, Venezia, Cuir Améthyste, Flowerbomb, Mauboussin, Shalimar, Casmir, Samsara, Lou Lou, Blonde, Champs Elysées. Thank you for this thread; by the way, I really enjoyed it and found it a huge eye-opener.
