Talking Discontinued Frags worth hunting down

I have been enjoying the hunt. Are there any other Discontinued/difficult frags worth trying to aquire.

I am already aware of the following, Can anyone think of any others that would be worthwile?

    Balanciaga
    Jean Patou Pour homme
    Jean Patou Pour homme prive
    Derby
    Versaille
    Leonard Pour homme
    Brownstone
    Ungaro I and II
    Havana

Any thought would be greatly appreciated. The hunt is half the fun and the other half is wearing these great scents.

Best to all of you basenoters out there

Rochas Macassar, Jacomo Eau Cendree, Lewellyn Stardust and Aramis Portos are all quite rare. I have two bottles of Macassar, a small bottle of Cendree, two decants of Stardust and a decant of Portos.

Jil Sander Man Pure EdT. Fresh take on woody chypre. One of my first. Not unlike Léonard H from the notes:
Bergamott, Citron, Basil, Origanum, Clary Sage, Aldehydes
    Clove, Patchouli, Cinnamon, Gefranium, Sandalwood
Leather, Moss, Castoreum, Olibanum, Labdanum, Musk, Amber

Mark II EdT by Jaguar. Kind of a sleeper. Very impressive woody oriental
    Bergamot, Mandarin
    Patchouli
    Tonka, Musk, Amber, Sandalwood

Maxim's de Paris EdT. Woody Fougère. Sophisticated powerhouse frag, excellent composition, rich but not cloying.
    Bergamot, lavender, fruit, clary sage.
Lilly of the Valley, Jasmin, clove, Cedar, Sandalwood
    Amber, Patchouli, Leather, Moss, Musk

Phileas by Nina Ricci. Fresh Chypre. A bit like Yatagan
Green notes, bergamot, Juniper, Basil, Lemon, Aldehydes
Clove, Patchouli, Vetiver, Fir, Thyme, Cinnamon, Jasmin, Cedar
Labdanum, Leather, Amber, Moss, Olibanum, Musk

Sud Est EdT by Romeo Gigli. If you like soapy, coniferous herbals, quite strong on the rosemary.
    Bergamot, Green notes, Aldehydes
Basil, Rosemary, Artemisia, Thyme, India-bay-leaf, Hyacinth, Jasmin, Coriander, Cinnamon
    Wood, Musk, Balsamic Notes

    Need I mention Havana?
    My Wardrobe
II est de forts parfums pour qui toute matière/Est poreuse. On dirait qu'ils pénètrent le verre.

I'd like to second Vendetta PH by Valentino. (One of the best things ever made IMHO.)

Also AD Plus by Alain Delon.

Jean Luis Trintingnant PH (a very spicy concoction — rather like Yatagan).

    Burberry for Men (1990 version)

Portos by Balenciaga. (Superb) Also Ho Hang Club.

You and I have very similar tastes I think.

    cheers

I used to have Portos by Balenciaga and while it is an interesting scent, I'm not so sure it would be worth the effort and price of hunting it down. It certainly deserves to be in production, but one could find several that give a similar vibe (or do it even better) at a lower price. It is rather spicy and earthy, but I think that Hermes Belami is heads and tails better. If I spent a lot on a discontinued Portos and then saw that I could have had Belami, I'd be disappointed.

Even YSL Jazz has a similar fresh but spicy vibe to it.

I also have the original Byblos for men, which has been discontinued for a while. It, too, is okay but nothing to write home about. Sometimes, there is no reason to discontinue a fragrance except that the "suits" in charge only see the bottome line (Patou Pour Homme, l'eau de navigateur, Yohji pour homme, etc.) But, also keep in mind that sometimes frags are discontinued for a reason and beyond nostalgia, aren't really worth spending 10x's retail.

Hey Rick where do you find all these discontinued fragrances? I wish I could find some
Nice list you have there. One that I tried recently and really want is Ungaro I. I've been able to track down a lot of stuff. Ralph Lauren Monogram has eluded me. No that I haven't found it for sale but I just didn't want to pay $150 for it.
    I recommend these that I own :

    DK Fuel
    DK Unleaded
    Patou Pour Homme and Prive
    Versailles Pour Homme
    Montana Parfum d'Homme
    Balenciaga Portos
    Rochas Macassar

these are ones I really want to own or at least try:

    Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur
    Guerlain Derby
    RL Monogram
    Ungaro I
    Burberry original
Gucci original (I can get this for $100 but is it worth it?)
Polo Crest (tried it but don't remember if I liked it)
    Nicole Miller for men
Balenciaga pour homme (I have a bottle on the way!)

P.S. I have a bottle of Versailles Pour Homme and Patou Prive on ebay right now, the Versailles is ending in a couple hours and no bids!

I've managed to get four good ones in the last month=

DK Unleaded - Very nice - soft leather and suede with a lovely fresh topnote, but just a little too subtle after not too long. Sillage is minimum for me.

Patou pour homme - Unfortunately I just dont like this - it's so dry it gives me a headache

Havana - THanks to Jellybean1973 I now have this masterpiece.. it's pretty much as has been described ad infinitum, and then some more - wonderful for the cold weather.

Montana pour Homme - Again, as described this is very similar to Havana - but there's a lack of rum note, and also it smells a little bit nuttier (literally) to me on the drydown. This is quite easy to get from US sellers on ebay - there seemed to be a dearth of it for a while, but quite a few bottles seem to have popped up recently (all from reputable sellers).

SMN tobacco is nice, reminds me a lot of Cuba, but more compleix, even a little of Chergui but simpler.

Well, I don't quite agree with you about Portos, rach2jlc, but I find what you say about Bel Ami quite interesting. I've sampled this in the Hermes boutique and quite liked it, but I can't say I got anything resembling Portos from it. But I think that just means that I need to sample it again and at greater length. It has been on my *Interested* list for a while.

All of this love that is going out for DK Fuel is making me really want to try it. Anyone want to sell some?

I had a Twilight Zone moment the other day. I was walking through the mall doing some gift shopping and noticed a fragrance kiosk in the center of the mall. I stopped by, looked through the offerings - many ordinary with a few discontinued items in the mix. Hiding behind a couple others was a 100ml retail bottle of Ungaro I, still in the plastic wrap! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Of course I bought it on the spot, and then questioned whether I was really awake. I guess it just goes to show that when you least expect to find a discontinued frag, there it is.

Some of my absolute favorites are discontinued: Ungaro I, Balenciaga PH, Derby, Havana, Relax, Patou PH and PH Prive, Guess Men (Original)...

I swapped mine. Definately one of the worst fragrances I've tried. It literally made me disgusted. Only Damien Bash Sin is more sickening I think. Each to their own of course, but I want to puncture that bubble that Unleaded is something for everyone to hunt down.

Has anyone mentioned Balafre (the old formulation)?
Iquitos, Tenere and Gucci Nobile are definitely worth the effort.
Ho Hang and Ho Hang Club are not that bad.
The venerable Jules by Dior (original version).
JHL (although I'm not sure if it's really been discontinued) and Tuscany (including the Forte version) from Aramis.
    Azzaro's Acteur.
Last but not least, Ted Lapidus TL pour Homme (the one with the tacky red plastic cap).
    Good luck.

B*Men by Thierry Mugler is another good bet... although it's only now in the process of being discontinued, you can still find it very easily (at reasonable prices, too). It's sorta like Angel Men/A*Men, but fresher and not as potent.

I live in Memphis, TN and there is a fragrance store here that has one 2 oz. of Jean Patou Pour Homme (splash not spray) for 33$!! They had two, but I bought one last week. They also have Leonard Pour Homme.

I had posted the number of the store earlier but have found out from another user that they don't take credit card orders over the phone or ship. Sorry for any confusion.

Sorry, TVLB, Jules had been mentioned several times already, as has Léonard pour Homme. (I must say I'm a real convert to the latter.)

But let me add one that is really obscure to this list: Herb Alpert's Listen. A surprisingly nice, wearable scent that reminds me a little of AD Plus by Alain Delon and also Romeo Gigli's Sud Est..

Homme de Grès by Grès saw this while lookin round for stuff and took a stab at it blindly...and since then it has become a dear favorite...i dont really relate to the reviews in the directory...i suppose it has some lemon to it...but overall its more of a "green" feel to me...great on longevity for me and a regular "office" frag also.. upon which i have received many compliments...i believe discontinued but still to be found......not at all dated to me but has a contemporary refined nature to it

Cool Re: Discontinued Frags worth hunting down

    Dear Santa:

For Christmas I would really like

    1. Hombre de Flores Polianthes Tuberosa by Fresh

    2. Jaguar (original)

    And, of course

Versailles pour Homme by Jean Desprez and Jean Patou PH by J.P.

I know I haven't been a particularly good boy, but keep in mind that Luca Turin highly recommended A*men and Tommy Girl, whereas my only sins were to give a good review to Prada Homme and a neutral to Creed's OV, so please grade me on a curve, and come through , OK?

    Thank you for

Patou PH Prive, no great shakes, but interesting.

    And a big thanks for

    1. Nicole Miller for Men --May I never run out of this bittersweet love potion!

2, Havana--(Which I'm wearing it today, in commemoration of escaping Cuba on 12/21/59. Nice not to have to worry anymore about doing 20 years of hard labor for speaking out against the regime) Great Bay Rum/ Tobacco Combo.

Hope you're having a good Winter's Solstice. Best to Mrs Santa and Rudolph,

    Cheers,

    Mario.

Nattygold hit my favorite discontinued, V.O. by Jean Marc Sinan, but the Iquitos by Alain Delon I'm wearing today is pretty wonderful.

Patou pour Homme is worth hunting down. It's incredibly rich and complex unlike the plain, simplistic and boring frags we get nowadays..

There's a bottle of V.O. here at Dulles Town Center. He won't let me try it on. It says Eau de Parfum on the bottle but it's in the men's section. All the ones I see online are EdT. Not sure if I should buy it blind.

I tried Furyo recently and it starts off much like Kouros but dries down differently. I prefer Kouros and it is cheaper too.

The Crown Perfumery range. My least favourite is Town & Country (too much sage/lavender). Eau de Quinine and Crown Imperial are hugely impressive - rich, sophisticated, and complex. They are old-fashioned in the best sense - there is a feeling of restrained power with them.

Bottles pop up on ebay UK and I recently bought a huge stash of sample vials for pennies.

There are too many to count, and there have been good observations here...

was Ô Pour Homme by Lancôme mentioned?

It's got to be one of my favorite scents of all time... at least to my nose, everything was fresh, jovial and made me very happy. (smells nothing like the original Ô for women).

Az, we should get a coffee sometime, and I'll bring my bottle of V.O. for you to test. Mine is the edt, and I'm glad you've seen it online. It may as well be edp strength, as it has almost Joop! Homme tenacity. Not a sweet scent at all, but an oakmoss-ash-leather-dirt-woods-whatsit smell though.

Never heard about any edp in it, and it makes me wonder if the edp is the women's companion to it. Heck, I don't know anything but that I have the edt and that's the one I'm thinking of for this thread.

Word of caution on it though: the scent isn't going to knock you out. It isn't a Patou or Desprez or a lost 100-year-old thing made for a relative of a Czar. It's a normal, stinky, dry sort of yuk scent. It isn't Ebène or long lost 1960s Lanvin Vetyver (hey, add that one to this thread) but it is a different beast of treesap. It won't rock your world or make a collection magnificent.

Add Lanvin's 1960s era Vetyver to this thread as a discontinued scent worth finding. Never smelled it myself, but vetivers are my drug.

I am still looking for 40 Love for Men by Jean Desprez. It is as unique as Versailles and yet nothing at all like it. Somebody, anybody, help me find it, please.
