Smile bf did something really romantic, help me make perfume choices

    Surprised me last night.

He went and booked a gorgeous Bed and Breakfast completely out of the blue. He's not trying to make up for something or celebrate anything particular he just went and did it :-) ...

And, also ... my first La Perla ... I feel like I don't really deserve to wear something that like that, but well I'm just really excited and jumping out of my skin.

(I'll bring long a racy little AP outfit too, that's less champagne and chocolate truffles than the La Perla -- it's maybe a bit more feral or even raunchy).

I don't think he plans on proposing to me now or anything like that (we're early in our relationship), but its so romatic and I love the photos of the room we're to stay in.

Anyway I want everything to be perfect. What perfume?

Do you know bath salts that might be appropriate?

If I were going to splurge on something to bring along for him, what do you think I should get? Cologne? It might be nice, I'd associate it with this really romatic time and he could wear it and it later...

No one's done something like this before and I need ideas and I want to share it with someone and I need to get a bit of reallly happy out of my system before telling my (single) friends.

Thanks for letting me share basenotes.

[Wow, that's a lot of pressure, fellow basenoters--picking the perfect scents for this occasion, but I know you're up to the task.]

First, congrats on finding romance! Now, can you tell us a little more? Is this B&B in a cold part of the country where there might be snow? Does your guy seem to have any fragrance preferences--like, is he a Starbucks junkie or is he into camping and nature smells? Help us narrow the possibilities.

Thank you so much for offering to help. I think I've come to the right place -- maybe I've over specifiied or there are too many elements. But I'm just really excited!

We'll be going to Napa Valley. It's cool but not snowy -- I think its fair to describe the winter clime there like the fall climate elsewhere.

As for his fragrence preferences: he's an attorney, and he doesn't ever wear cologne to the office. He shaves with a SandalWood shaving cream and drinks lots of green tea. He's more urbanite than mountain man.

    I have no ideas.

Thank you very much for advice.

    That's really helpful.

Here are my recommendations, and I insist you follow them to the letter :

Order some top-of-the-line samples--more affordable than wasting money on a wild guess, and ever so much fun to experiment to learn which frags suit you or him or both of you! As long as you don't apply too heavily, they won't compromise any winetasting you do. Samples are also easier to pack and transport than full bottles.

#1--Ginestet Le Boise, a fragrance inspired by wine and wooden casks

    #2--Escentric 01, a fresh yet mild invention

#3--Gendarme, one of the top-rated fresh men's scents

#4--L'eau Rare Matale, black tea and other beautiful notes

#5--Premier Figuer, extremely popular soft figgy scent

I'm sure more suggestions will be forthcoming from everyone here. You understand, YOU MUST report on whatever develops from all this--scents and otherwise

wow. that's so sweet of him - a big congrats to you!! sounds like you're both gonna have a fun time

now, when it comes to suggestions, I'm not always the best so any basenoters can disagree with anything I say...I don't mind!!

Was the fragrance you were thinking of getting something that would be especially for him, or something that you could both share?

I haven't tried many men's fragrances, other than ones that I've promoted in the past, and ones that customers have been interested in...but i'll try my best!

Escape for Men (Calvin Klein) - starts off fresh, ends up warm & sensual
Vera Wang for Men - seductive and sophisticated
Obsession Night for Men (Calvin Klein)
    Silver Shadow (Davidoff)
    Bulgari Pour Homme

As for unisex scents, I haven't really tried too many myself, but there are a few that I've had recommended by friends - and there are even some that you may be able to get samples of for free!!

Musc Ravageur by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle -- you can go to their website and get samples sent to you by filling in a questionnaire (or you could try emailing them as well)
    http://www.editionsdeparfums.com/

Timbuktu by L'Artisan Parfumeur -- you can email them from their site and ask whether they could send you samples as well
    http://www.artisanparfumeur.com/fr/index.html

Paestum Rose by Eau d'Italie -- you can email them as well, and they may send you some samples (i got samples from them today - 2 of each of the 4 fragrances, which are all unisex!!)
    http://www.eauditalie.it/

Sandalwood by Floris -- email them too...I got 19 fragrance samples from them almost 2 weeks ago, some of them were unisex ones (including this one)

I hope that helps you out a bit...any basenoters can disagree with any of the suggestions I've made!

Oh my gosh!! That's amazing. And La Perla has gorgeous things! You lucky girl.

Well, I know that for me personally, it's the mood and the place that sets the tone for what I'm going to wear. I would probably go for Musc Ravageur or Timbuktu, but mostly 'cos those are the two on my wishlist! They are great because both of you could wear them.

I'm not much on bath salts, but I love Lush. They have some amazing stuff, but a lot of their scents are "earthy" so I'm not sure if you're into that.

Good luck, and have a fabulous time. Don't forget the champagne and glasses.

You're lucky to have such a great guy!

My vote is for Jean-Paul Gaultier's Gaultier2. It's touted as "a fragrance for lovers." It's unisex and can very easily be worn by both men & women. And...it's sensual as hell. You should also pick up some of the Gaultier2 massage oil ;-)
