Default Esteé Lauder's Metropolis similar fragrances

I would appreciate any suggestions of similar fragrances to the Esteé Lauder's Metropolis provided it is no longer in production.

    Bumping this thread.

A buddy of mine asked me this question (he said he used to wear this a lot many years ago) and I didn't know what to tell him since I've never smelled Metropolis.

It was like a smokier version of Lauder for Men. Anvers is similar, I think.

Thanks ChuckW. I remember testing Anvers quite a long time ago (I, personally, didn't like it). Maybe I'll get him a sample of that to see if it clicks with him. Much appreciated!

Metropolis is one of my favorites. The best way to recreate it is by layering Sud Est by Romeo Gigli (also discontinued, but easier to find) and a pure citrus fragrance like Annick Goutal's Eau de Sud to mimic the top notes.

Hmmm...a smokier Lauder for Men or a layering of Sud Est with Eau de Sud.

These two descriptions sound way different to me.

Yes they do sound different! I do not think Metropolis smells anything like Lauder for Men, but I'm a relative newbie.

However, I do own vintage Metropolis splash and spray EDT, and attempted to recreate it before I found them. Romeo Gigli Sud Est layered with Eau de Sud was the most similar to my nose.

Metropolis is nothing like Lauder for Men. Lauder For Men is an aromatic fougere while Metropolis is a chypre.

Metropolis is basically a more-expensive Aqua Velva, with the mint removed and some sage and bay leaves added to the middle notes. That, combined with the bizarre marketing campaign featuring Liza Minelli, is kind of why it was a market flop in spite of its being a fine fragrance.

As for Metropolis substitutes, Aramis Life springs to mind.

Lanvin l'Homme and Alfred Sung Hei belong to the same family but are slightly aquatic.

Bumping this thread because there is currently a fortuitous opportunity afoot, that I figured Metropolis lovers here would really appreciate knowing about. There's a seller on eBay (dishwisher) who apparently fell into a "major lode" of this stuff in 50ml size, NOS boxed. As of 02/11, 19 have sold and only 8 are left. $35 "buy it now" or "make an offer" (and so far I've gotten accepted as low as $27). This is terrific pricing, relative to what scarce inventory is often listed at. I bought one blind, received it, loved it, and then bought 2 more.

    Get 'em while you can!
