Default Bel Ami - Another One Bites The Dust

My love for Bel Ami isn't what it used to be, but I never thought they'd mess with it. I bought a new bottle and there's no question that it's been softened up. The topnotes are almost completely flat, whereas they were once some of the most dissonant in all of perfumery. And the overall fragrance is just not as compelling as it was. The drydown is still worthy, though I'll be speding little time there because what comes before it isn't all that pleasing. Exposed to heat and light when I lived in the desert, the juice from my old bottle (circa 1987) is still miles ahead of what comes out of the newly designed bottle. I'd like to supply you with more details but I don't even want to wear the stuff right now.

Equipage also doesn't seem as good as it was, but its basic nature is the same. Eau d'Hermes remains as good as ever.

Maybe I got a bad bottle, but it doesn't smell like damaged juice, it just smells like it's been seriously attenuated.

    Thanks for this post.

I've often wondered if this fragrance has been "watered down" over the years, as well as Jules, as similar fragrance.

Jules is still excellent. If they did restore it they didn't do too much damage.

Is this the designer house idea of "permanent batch variation" ?

I was never a fan of Bel Ami, but do the houses which indulge in reformulations think that the changes will go unnoticed by the hardcore fans ?

What if Chanel reformulated No. 5 ? That would cause a worldwide commotion !

There's only a couple spritzes left in my new-style bottle. Next one i buy will be in the old-school bottle...i'm curious to smell the difference, if any.
Are you not entertained??? Is this not why you are here??
