    Cool The Magnificent Seven--Suggestions, Please

    __________________
The Magnificent Seven: Dunhill '34, Himalaya, Nicole Miller for Men, Bulgari Black, Guerlian Vetiver, Minotaure, Antaeus.

Being fickle, and worrying there will be an increasing rush to get the already disconinued Dunhill '34 and Nicole Miller for Men, I've deleted these from my signature. (Alert the media.)

I would however, welcome comments as to what you think of these, and much more to the point--

    --WHICH FRAGS ARE ALIKE!

If not in scent, then in efffect.

    Huh?

    Well, for example:

    1. DUNHILL '34 -- Supposedly a James Bond fave--don't ask me which novel. It's a very warm, masculine, and smooth concoction of florals with a leather base.
The smoothness also makes it appropiate for romantic encounters.

Haven't found anything remotely like it, at least not the floral and leather part (Please God, don't have anyone suggest Bandit)

There are other strong 'masculine powehouse' frags that are meant to be worn with suit and tie, but most are in the fungus/oakmoss/chypre/hello-drakkar noir1980's dept.

Still, there are some non-fungal standouts such as Vintage Tabarome and Blenhim Bouquet, or Tuscany/Etruscan, but to my nose, while they're great frags, they're more suited to a confrontation, from fist fights, corporate takeovers, or establishing any sort of Alpha male dominance.
I would not call them smooth amd warm.

    Hmm . . .I am at a loss.

Eucris perhaps? One of the Ungaros? Creed's OV? Serge's MKK(???)
    --What?

    2. HIMALAYA---Or tap dancing in heaven . . .

Silver Mountain Water? Paco's XS? Geir? Habit Rouge in winter? You tell me.

    3. NICOLLE MILLER FOR MEN---Fruity and boozy with a romantic bitersweet tragic feel, like long lost loves . . .

Rocabar? Vintage Varvatos? Le Roy Soleil on a cloudy day? Rocher's Homme Nature on a cloudy and rainy day?
    Erolfa by the seashore?

    *sigh*

    4. BULGARI BLACK---Urban high tech super cool.
Far more complex than SMN's Nostalgia, imho. Being readily available, it's prone to being ignored by the niche-snob crowd.

My review: " I can picture Darth Vader wearing this one! Unisex? This may be Bvlgari's most masculine cologne. It's certainly its best. Though I can also picture Mrs. Emma Peel wearing it, as she counsels Steed to always keep his bowler on in times of stress and watch out for diabolical masterminds. . ."

    Er . . .Antaeus?
    Ah, Well . . .

    5. GUERLIAN VETIVER--Another 'freedom personified' upbeat frag/masterpiece. ( I use L'Occitane if I'm bummed out )

Hmm . . .I dunno, another great vetiver?

    6. MINOTAURE---Granted, in overdose, this can smell like orange-sweet/sour candy with a kind of ambergris.
Ambergris?--Well, if the whale in question swallowed Paloma Picasso and The Bull bull before regurgitating, yeah. Wtf, it's a Latin Babe Magnet and I'm Latin, so there.

    Roma Uomo?
    Yes.
    And?

7.ANTAEUS---You don't have to be tall, dark and handsome to wear it but (ahem) I've found that if I wear anything else at night, it's usually a mistake.
Sophisticated and mysterious, the ultimate non-adolescent, non-mamma's boy scent.

Er . .Bulgari Black? Royal English Leather?

Suggestions, please. (For any one of these)

    Thx in advance,

    Mario

    Mario,

... i've read all of your reviews - yours and Martin_Dean's. A few others.

You know what you're about. You don't need anyone to tell you what to think ... but anyway, i'll be sure to check this thread to see what people offer up.

PS: there's (at least) one keeper in your list [which has no peer]. Check my posts (there aren't many) for a Scent of the Day - should only be one (or perhaps, two - one of which matches your list).

    PPS: have a good one!

    Best regards,
    C.

Antaeus smells more similar to Van Cleef pour homme than Bulgari Black.

Dunhill '34 <-> Z-14 (older juice if you can get it)
    Himalaya <-> XS
Antaeus... the closest I can think of is vintage CM Greenbriar if you can get your hands on it. I remember some people saying 273 (or whatever that Fred Hayman number is) is akin to Antaeus.
For Minotaure <-> Camera Long Lasting (funky bottle too)
For Guerlain Vetiver I don't know a replacement ... maybe Miracle Homme L'Aquatonic for effect.

I always equate Azzaro pour Homme to Dunhill 1934. Not that they smell that much alike, but they are equally, unabashidly maculine.

As much as I love the Dunhill, I find the Azzaro more wearable.

MPG Racine is similar to Guerlain Vetiver (more citrus, less vetiver).

The bearded man's got it! (ZZ - this means you, haha) I still polish my drag-racing trophies. (no haha)

This is hard. How can i put this? Too new to the aficianado thing. But ... say, you are Raskolnikov in "Crime and Punishment". You wear Antaeus - because you're about to hit someone in the head with an axe. Gawd, the dry-cleaning bills - can you imagine? Kidding. Antaeus is a block of stone, it's uncompromising. Deliberate.

Anyway, he was a bit soft in the head. He couldn't wear Antaeus.

What can i say? Antaeus came years after the VCA, so let's start there. Antaeus is an hommage. It is a deconstructed VCA pour homme. A core. With modifications. Rebuilt on a new frame. It's as if you were to strip VCA and rebuild on a new platform for a new purpose. And that new purpose was focused. Entirely new. It's like you're a French cavalry officer, cutting down infantry. It's flowing ... speedier. Versatile.

It's wonderful. I love it. It needs no comparison. That is all.

Dunhill for Men discontinued? When did it go "discontinued"? I saw it at the Manhattan store not so long ago! Sure?

Cool Re: The Magnificent Seven--Suggestions, Please

Joe: That's the original 1934 Dunhill, not the Dunhill for Men you're probably thinking of so relax, you're safe. They look--well, perhaps someone with better computer skills and who owns both, will put the pics up.

    Raskalnikov wearing Antaeus?
Odd, I would have thought L'Anarchiste or Yatagan
Now, Dimitri Karamazov, that's another story

Wow, I feel a new thread brewing here: Protagonists in classic novels and their fragrances!

Got to give it more thought, but Humpert Humpert in Lolita would certainly be wearing Rochas Man or A*men

Thanks for the suggestions, thus far. Keep 'em coming!

    Cheers,

    Mario

Mario, I'm unaware that the original 'Dunhil for men' has been discontinued.
I saw it in the Dunhil shop a few weeks ago.

This is the bottle i'm referring to:

magnum: That's the one! It also shows as being 'in production' here at the BN review site, which would be great.

However, I remember having a VERY hard time finding it it the first time I purchased it. Then Perfume Emporium carried it--then stopped.

As you can see in the site you posted, Perfume Bay, it's ' out of stock. '

Just did a Shopzilla search= nada.

Any moderators, sellers, or anyone else who can shed light on this?

And hopefully provide us with some online sites that carry it?

    THX, magnum

I believe this is it, however it is without a picture, I guess its worth enquiring about as it has been described as an eau de cologne...
