Default Preparing for March 3 (chypres)

As per a developing tradition, March 3 is the next Sniff 'n' Speak (the first Saturday of each month everyone is encouraged to select a favorite scent from within a theme and share your thoughts).

For March, it's chypre (SHEE-preh/SHEE-prah), a class of scents whose definition has only become vaguer over time (see the recent discussion "New chypre vs. classic chypre").

I'm counting on my learned friends here to recommend the finest chypre scents for Saturday.

I may go with one of Musse's faves, Ma Griffe, a green chypre which doesn't seem that green to me. How about you?

Was all set to go with newly acquired Cabotine but - after following Quarry's thread - may use this as an excuse to avail myself of Narcisco Rodriguez!! :bounce:

I used to be a Chypre Queen but life changes, illness and stress-altered chemistry made me relinquish my throne.Things are returning to normal again so I look forward to enjoying my favourite group of soul scents again...

I love chypre scents and own about 90% of those listed and quite a few male ones also! My favourite chypres, by far, are the floral-animalic type but that will probably not come as any great surprise.

Chypre used to be my favourite scent family but that was B.B. (Before Basenotes) and the discovery of so many other scents. Montana Parfum de Peau, Parfum D'Elle, Ungaro Diva, and Chanel No.19 are all possibilities....

OK - I'm choosing from those above. I'm thinking the Parisian funk of Maxim's or the violet streak in Grey Flannel - any thoughts?

I say yay for the Maxims pour Homme because it is a much ignored, underrated beauty and it deserves a fair wearing.

hmmm... I see a good number in my wardrobe or sample stable that I could try...
Mitsouko, Chanel 19, NR for Her, or Chypre Rouge are ones I am considering
"Like a lobster with a pearl in its claw, the beet held the jasmine firmly without crushing or obscuring it. Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. As if jasmine were a collection of beautiful paintings, beet hung it in the galleries of the nose, insured it against fire or theft, threw a party to celebrate it. Citron mailed the invitations." Thanks Moondeva for the list, and I have picked 3 which I enjoy the most...
    YSL Y
    Piguet Bandit
    Dior Miss Dior Cherie

Here is the scenerio. I will be travelling with my colleagues to cross the border to the mainland on this Saturday to get some shirts made. Bandit would be too strong and too naughty for this. Should I wear Miss Dior Cherie or YSL - Y?

Great list, Moondeva, as always. You are a true treasure.
I don't usually get in on these Sniff 'n Speaks because I'm so intermittent on the internet, but I can't resist chypres, and will take part whether I'm near the internet or not Saturday. The thought of the resonance of all those chypres around the world gives me goosebumps. Surely this day will be capable of raising the intelligence of the planet

    Several more chypres:
    Opone - Diptyque
    Profumo - Acqua Di Parma
    Iris Nobile - " " "
    Bois D'Iris - Different Co.
    Eau Dynamisante - Clarins
    Rose Barbare - Guerlain
    Safari - Ralph Lauren
    Cashmere Mist: Watermist Leaf
    Comme De Garcon 2
Comme De Garcon 2 Love Hurts
    " " " No. 3
    " " " Odeur 71
    MAC Creations Hue : Violetrix
    Dirt - Demeter
    Chypre 06 - Patyka
    Agent Provocateur Eau Emotionelle
    " " Menage A Trois
    Apercu - Houbigant
    Aria Di Capri - Carthusia
    Divine - Divine
    Calicanthus - Santa Maria Novella
    Rose Essentielle - Bulgari
    Histoire D'Amour - Aubusson
    Perles De Lalique
X for Women - Clive Christian
    Sandalwood Vert - Fresh Index
    Pomegranate Anise - "
    Acier Aluminium - Creed
    I Am Brave - Danica
    Yatagan
    Woods of Windsor for Men
    Salvador Dali Le Parfum
    Cuir Amethyste - Armani
    Baroque Bleu - Stacked Style
    Le Dix - Balenciaga
    Lady Caron
    Eau D'Ivoire - Balmain
    La Nuit de Paco Rabanne
    Eau Suave - Parfum D'Empire
    Chypre-Fruite - Montale
    Derby - Guerlain
    Aire Loewe - Loewe
    Silences - Jacomo

There's a few I didn't see as chypres, but were listed as such on Michael Edwards. It's hard to narrow down to one, but I may do two - one in the day and one in the evening. So far, I've narrowed it to Opone, Agent Provocateur or Eau Emotionelle, Profumo, Bandit, La Nuit, and Eau Suave.

I have a number of these beauties and will wait until nearer the day to decide.

Yes, Joy and yes, Zibeline - I am relieved that you both recognised her....I got a mail from Riannon who first thought it was a pic of myself with a Hannibal Lecter-like mask, ROTFLMAO! I adore Kim Novak and that movie is one of my favourites.

And I'm sorry I typed it wrong, Tommi, of course it is litsea cubeba.

I am a little early and for some reason missed the last sniff n speak so I think I better start already since I may or may not be here tomorrow. My very first bottle of Mitsouko 2.5 oz EDP arrived today.
Notes according to BN Top: Bergamot, Rose
    Middle: Jasmin, Spices, Peach
    Bottom: Oakmoss, woody notes.
I have finally grown into this and have been enjoying it today. Spicey I love and it doesn't have too much cinnamon as say Opium or Cinnabar. It has great lasting power and is the only chypre I have brought home that my husband likes. The others were Boucheron, Amarage Marriage, Miss Dior, Tabu & Palamo Picasso. It is easy to see now why this has become the classic it has and if it were even better in the past because of a good dose of oakmoss, it is no wonder people who know perfume are into it. The samples I had tried were EDT. I did not like them as well as the EDP. But this is definitely a keeper.
