Default Reviews: Kingdom & Ambre Canelle (warning- graphic!)

My brother walked into the bathroom and noticed four new bottles on the ever changing shelf by the mirror.

    His comments:

Creed Green Valley : "Hmmm, nice. It smells like Alexander the Grape (a candy) mixed with sweet tarts."

Hermés Eau D'Orange Verte Concentré : "I like this."

Alexander McQueen Kingdom: "This smells like pussy."
    (I giggled inwardly)

Creed Ambre Canelle: (smelled it for at least 30 seconds) "well... uh...it's powdery?"

OK, this review is going to focus only on Kingdom and Ambre Canelle.

I was really, really anticipating trying Kingdom based on everything I'd read. Well, when I tried it, I was immediately aroused. It was a physiological response-- like I'd popped a viagra. Really odd. It's never happened to me before. Still, I didn't get the whole sweat thing or that crotch thing all that overtly. Sure it smelled erotic and quite dirty... but it didn't quite strike me the way my brother described it-- and I've been intimate with more women than my brother has! I get the rose, sandalwood, and other things from it. And I guess when I back my nose away from it I do get some "snizz" out of it. Maybe, if I think about it. Too bad it's a lonely Friday night and I can't do an A/B test with the real thing.

I just don't know if I trust my nose. Because if I'd never been told what Kingdom was supposed to smell like, maybe it would never dawn on me. I don't get the cumin=BO thing. If I was given Kingdom and told nothing about it, I wouldn't think it to be all that offensive. I find it very feminine, natural and sexy. Hell, I might even have worn it myself, because it almost seemed unisex in a way.

I might just keep the bottle on my nightstand...

Ambre Canelle is quite a strange and powerful scent. Now this one I do find to be very dirty and sexual. I got it to see what ambergris is supposed to smell like for the sake of reference-- The first blast of AC is heavy on florals-- maybe rose or jasmine. And there is a heavy lumbering base of what I take to be ambergris. As it dries down it gets barbershop-y-- kind of into the territory of Helmut Lang. It's really dated. I don't think I'll wear it out. I didn't buy it so much for myself to wear anyway. I do find it really sexual though. Kind of something a "cougar" would smell like. This scent could be a real turn on, but it's sort of one of those scents that a woman would wear and everyone would turn and whisper amongst themselves, "that perfume STINKS"... and then if you were the guy she seduced, you might kind of think the same thing, but you'd wonder why it was making you so horny and full of vigor later when she got you home or out to her Camry...

Eh. Lucky you... on me Kingdom ended up smelling like fried chicken

Seriously: I think this is what cumin routinely does on my skin, because I've had this same KFC note emerge from several other fragrances.

I was really looking forward to trying Kingdom (the reviews! the bottle!), and the first chance I got, I gave it a go. Nothing interesting emerged, apart from the fact I soon smelled as though I spent a lot of time asking people if they "want a soda with that?".

You didn't detect any sort of "fried" note or accord at all?

I agree with your brother about his comments on GIT: I get sweet tarts notes too.

In addition, I use my Kingdom decant VERY carefully after one experience: I wore it to the theater once and was quite embarassed about the 'interesting' sillage that I created in that warm, tightly packed theater.

Kingdom was a whole lot of nothing on me. The test strip was faintly lemony. On me it was the same, then dried to musty lemons an hour or so later. Then it was gone. I've never been so underwhelmed by a scent - and I really wanted to like this, or at least find it interesting!

Ambre Cannelle - bit dry for me. I was expecting something rich, warm and sweet, and it was almost sour to my nose. I guess I've been spoiled by Ambre Sultan.
    Do love REL though.

To me, Ambre Canelle dries down to a bay leaf/ ambergris accord. If you want to smell lots of ambergris, try Creed's Fleurs de Bulgarie. The barbershop effect is the bay leaf and not the ambergris. Ambergris (gray amber) smells warm and a lot like powdery amber. Mix this with bay leaf and it smells a lot like Ambre Canelle. I don't get much cinnamon in this at all! To me it's very feminine because of all of the florals in it and then, all of the sudden, it's gone! It lasted about an hour (no lie!) on my skin.

yep! (referring to the "Snuke" episode)

Something weird about Ambre Canelle. For the hell of it I sprayed two shots on my arm, then immediately washed it off-- to see what would remain. It was something very delicious. It smelled like this homemade icing my mom would make to put on cookies-- more like a white glaze than icing really.

Paintrman, I do get the bay leaf you're talking about. Kind of different.

Also, I wore Green Valley to work tonight and realized another scent that it reminds me of-- Jil Sander for Men ( the one in the squat little cylindrical bottle with the bulky black cap, the stuff with the blue-grey juice). Yeah, GV reminded me of a less synthetic version of it.

The description of Kingdom sounds riveting! I will have to try it. The bottles look cool, too. It'll be on my ever-lengthening list for my next trip to Civilization.

Can't say that I'm tempted to try Ambre Canelle because Ambre Sultan fulfills all my amber needs and then some.

lately, this is the comment my boyfriend gives me whenever I ask him to test sniff a new scent on my skin, lol!
"Like a lobster with a pearl in its claw, the beet held the jasmine firmly without crushing or obscuring it. Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. As if jasmine were a collection of beautiful paintings, beet hung it in the galleries of the nose, insured it against fire or theft, threw a party to celebrate it. Citron mailed the invitations." These were interesting reviews, Indie

I can definitley see the female sexual reference in cumin, though in some cases it actually smells like male sweat. I thin in Kingdom it is very subtly done, so maybe that's why you didn't notice the cumin in particular. If you want to get the full effect get a whiff of the reformulated Femme (EDT or EDP).

Ambre Canelle is the only Creed where I can smell the ambergris. I think the presence of ambergris in most of the Creeds is more of a myth than reality (to substantiate the price perhaps?). I found it very interesting, even if potent and old fashioned. But I liked it. I think Agent Provocateur is similar to it, though there is no ambergris in it at all. Ambre Canelle is one dirty perfume, and I say it affectionately. That said, I can't see myself being to wear it very often...

On another note, the bathroom is the WORST place to keep fragrances, right after the kitchen:
It's humid, often warm, full of light...
Best to keep your fragrances in your bedroom, or any other room where water and heat and light don't get so active - that's if you must see them at all times.
Of course, it's best to keep them in a dark place, such as a drawer or a closet.

In the most of others ambergris is one of the components forming the standard Creed base and isn't that obvious to the nose. The only other Creed fragrance with a loud ambergris presence is Fleurs de Bulgarie.

Very nice take on Ambre Canelle. I agree it's old-fashioned. Thick, powdery, suffocatingly floral, not really that much cinnamon. An Elizabeth-Taylor-past-fifty thing, I find it impossible to wear. Royal Delight has the kind of dense opulence I far prefer.
