Cool Strictly Leather (calling all Blue Oyster Cult fans!)

    I kid you, of course.

I sense a need in my wardrobe for a "leather" scent. Would appreciate recommendations based upon (a) the rather traditional bent of my wardrobe, and (b) the fact that I spend a lot of time in an office setting, but would prefer to enjoy occasionally a leather-based frag that would serve me both in the office and out and about on the weekend. Please bear in mind that my wife does not prefer ass-less chaps. :-))

    TIA,

Since you like the Creeds, I say Royal English Leather.

And if that doesn't move you, try Knize Ten... very classic and old school.

And if you want to share a leather with your wife, try Chanel Cuir de Russie.

And if you want an adventurous leather, try Tabac Blond.

And if you want a leather for the weekend, with a bit of sweetness, try SL Cuir Mauresque.

You may want to look for Helmut Lang Cuiron! Leather doesn't get much better than this. It opens with a nice burst of freshness, but the dry down is pure sensuous leather.

It's sadly discontinued, but still available through various internet vendors. And it's not very expensive.

Lots of great leathers out there, but if you need something that will work in the office...

    Daim Blond
    Eau d'Hermes
    Ayala Moriel Rebellius
    Cuir Ottoman
    and maybe even Dzing!

Both Cuiron and Daim Blond would be great choices. Cuiron being the masculine of the two. Daim Blond is very much unisex -- possibly leaning toward the feminine side. With DB, i would sample before buying. Some think the leather (suede) isn't very strong.

Another good one to check out is Nostalgia by SMN. It starts out weird and strong, but dries down to an amazing leather finish.

Do you want Russian leather or just leather? A couple to try would be Knize Ten and Heeeley's Fine Leather. Nostalgia is great as well, but you have to be in the right mind set. Bel Ami is a great pick as well (Hermes's "bedroom scent").

Montale's Aoud Cuir d'Arabie is a good leather scent, though it is a bit expensive. Blue Oyster Cult rocks!

    No jokes accepted!
Just wait till the end of year and buy new cologne from Etat Libre d`Orange - it will be made with Tom of Finland in perfumers` (Antoine Lie, Givaudan) mind. As I read in press-release - they signed the license agreement.
As I know - there were three basic ideas of Tom of Finland: Clean Musk, Latex and Fresh Leather. And I like all three scents - even though I`m not a fan of Tom. I`m fan of leather scents.

I think it's now half price on the montale website.

I'd like to suggest you try MINOTAURE (Paloma Picasso).
It has a GREAT leather note which is combined with bitter orange... light enough to wear during the day, but with tons of full-bodied character to see you through the evening.

Personally, I don't think Knize Ten or Creed's Royal English Leather smell like leather at all.

    3. Serge Lutens - Cuir Mauresque
    4. Caron - Tabac Blonde
    5. Geo. F. Trumpers - Spanish Leather Cologne

Fragrances like Antaeus, Van Cleef pour homme, CC X, and other similar fragrances have a leather note, but arent predominantly leather fragrances. They are definitely not what I would call "strictly leather" fragrances.

Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford - one of the BEST of the 12 exclusive scents, although a little pricey...

I wore three leather scents yesterday, to compare side by side.

Cuiron - Very tenacious but close to the skin, a very good leather with not much else to confuse the note. I did get an odd flinty "mineral" note late into the drydown, similar to Terre d'Hermes. No sweetness at all in this one. Longevity was the best of the three at over 11 hours. This was also the most masculine of the three IMO.

SL Daim Blond - Mmmmm.... rich, buttery, and smooth! Calls to mind an expensive pair of gloves... (or the interior a Ferrari... ) Longevity was the poorest of the three at 6-7 hours, but what a ride! This one had quite a bit of sweetness in it as well. However, I think it's easily a unisex scent.

L'Artisan Dzing! - Another sweet leather, but the animalic elephant-house vibe was off-putting to me. Longevity was good at around 8 hours. Definitely sample this one first.

An unusual suggestion is Etienne Aigner's "In Leather Man"
    http://www.basenotes.net/ID26123229.html
and even better its "Suede Edition" (a limited edition not listed in the Directory by the way).
    Pure leather in any case...

Man, I'm really intrigued by all the praise for Cuiron. Seems to be one of the best reviewed scents I've come across. I have been looking for a nice leather scent too (just picked up a sample of Dzing but haven't worn it yet) but from the description, Cuiron may be what I'm looking for.

Anybody have a decant they want to part with? PM me if so.

Tom of Finland!?!?! I suppose it does not speak well of me that I recognize the name and was hooting with laughter as I read it. But I was suitably appalled when I realized you were probably not kidding.Mind you, one of the funniest things I have ever seen was Tom of Finland's art printed as a fine classic toile.

Wow. Thanks for all the suggestions, and for the various classifications, as well. Looks like I've a lot of sampling to do (not that that is a bad thing at all).

Every one in the list is solidly in the "leather chypre" category (as strictly leather as it gets) containing substantial amounts of birch in various forms, oakmoss, castoreum, patchouli, labdanum, etc.

    Antaeus
    Bel Ami
Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme
    Cuir Mauresque
    Derby
    Knize Ten
    Trussardi Uomo
    Cuir d'Oranger
    Richard James
    Clive Christian X for Men
    Oud Cuir d'Arabie
    Chanel Cuir de Russie
    Bandit
    Tabac Blond
    La Nuit
    Cabochard (esp. vintage)

    to name a few...
