    Its weird.

I have never met Suan. Never even messaged her outside the rugby thread.

But yesterday I kept thinking about her.
I hope her family is all right they must be going through a rough patch.

I just got to know Sudsy via PMs we exchanged because I had some free samples of Yves Rocher's Iris Noir and offered to send them to anyone who wanted them. Sudsy was the only person who got in touch so I sent her a bunch of them and as well as being very sad that such a nice person has been killed, in the back of my head I'm thinking 'oh I hope those samples got to her and she was able to smell them.' Dumb, huh?
She was such a nice lady and such fun to talk to. I'm very sad. My condolences to her family and friends.

Edited: it's Saturday afternoon, October 6th. I didn't realise until I wrote this post and saw the comment above that Sudsy was a rugby fan. In her honour I will be supporting Australia in the World Cup quarter final this afternoon and I encourage anyone else who isn't already affiliated to do the same.

I don't want all the same kind of frags anyway, the variety is fabulous thus far, & I did get JOY from Quarry so that is one I am having fun trying also.

You got the PAYPAL payment ok didn't you?

    Hey Sudsy!

Part of it went in the mail yesterday, and that's why I came on forum today, to tell you. I know I should have it all done by now, and I kept thinking, "Tomorrow...." so I sent the 24 samples I had ready with 29 to go. They will follow in another week, I expect, because I have thirty daylilies to plant this evening and twenty more coming next week, and my sister has been very ill with sinus infection that settled to pneumonia and the stress of it brought on shingles at her waist and half her face. This weekend must be devoted to her. Her house and laundry are so far behind that's a stress in itself.

Besides which, twenty four samples will occupy you, I figure, and so you won't mind so much that the rest is really late. Will you?

    I smell good.

    Hugs, Patsy
    Hi Patsy,
The envelope arrived today, thank you dear.
I am supposed to be going to get groceries but I just had to open it and start to sniff through.
I know I am going to love going through them all, whether I finally like or dislike them and I thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to have so many.
Just a couple things: You mentioned in your PM that you sent 24 but there are only 20 frags in this shipment...? The end of the envelope flap was partially open & the lid on the large decant was cracked. 12 mini atomizer vials, 6 vials, one mini & one larger decant. Is that correct? or did you send 24?
Also I noticed that you put PERFUME SAMPLES on the Customs form and I am amazed they didn't confiscate the parcel. Thank god they didn't, I'm so surprised. Perhaps USED MAKEUP SAMPLES would be safer?

Must run out now or we will not eat!!
    Hugs & kisses,
    Suds

I sent 20. I realize I had four marked off that I saved for the box. I'm sending the little 4piece tin including the Violetta de Parma and Corticco di Pino, a 30ml bottle of Sugar Blossom which came in a coffrett, a carded sample of Highland Lilac and they wouldn't fit in the envelope.

I don't have Sake anymore. The top to those little decant bottles are delicate, most of mine break in use for no apparent reason. I put another one in the box for you so at least it will make to you intact.

Feel free to pick something else if you like, instead of the Sake. It'll be sealed up and mailed tomorrow, but I can still send a little envelope later. I'll will mark it "cosmetic samples". Happy sniffing! Patsy
Oh thank god... I thought perhaps some of the little vials had escaped the wrapping/envelope.

About the SAKE, I'll be happy with whatever you've decided to throw in to replace it.

Thanks about the Customs form; I don't want THEM to get my new smellies!!

    Have a lovely day,
    Suds

no!!!! i saw the SnS thing yesters and it really didn't register that she had passed on... and now it's sinking in :'(

i respected susan and her opinion so much... only a month ago she had sent samples and i was to return the favour at the end of this year (end of yr12). i didn't know much about her but she was very generous and always organising australia wide swaps and outings in perth. i used to wish i had never moved from perth... i will miss her so much.

all the best to her family,

Wow this is so sad. I too didn't know her, but my prayers go out to her family. I saw this thread, but didn't think that it was for real, for real.

You know just about a week ago on another board that I post on, a person made a thread about would you care if another boardie died. I thought about that. I don't know any of these people. I have never met them. Why would I care? I realized when I saw this thread that I have never known anyone from a board that died. I didn't know her, but I feel sad because you hate to hear that someone has passed in on such a way. We connected with one of the things we all love and that's perfume. So, yes I do care.

RIP Sudsy........I know you are floating on a scented cloud making the rain drops smell sweet.

When I first heard about Susan’s death my thought was: how could this have happened? The report was brief and contained no details: perhaps appropriately, I don’t know. But it felt wrong, in an indefinable way. Given the number of pm’s that flew about subsequently, there were others who apparently felt as I did: more information was needed on this tragedy.

Here is that more. If you are not interested in knowing more then don’t read it. But for those for whom it is a sign of respect to wish to know more about why someone we knew and felt affection for died, here it is.

Susan and her husband were travelling north into Perth along a “highway”. Those familiar with Australian roads will understand the shudder-quotes. It was a one-lane-each-way road with a gravel shoulder. It was noon. Coming in the other direction was a Ford ute (utility vehicle — I don’t know what they are called in America) driven by two young men, both aged 21. They were workers returning home; their tools were in the back of the ute. Their driving was described as wildly erratic by other motorists: they had been overtaking despite double yellow lines (which are there to forbid overtaking) and, since they were overtaking, they were exceeding the 110 km/hr (70miles/hr) speed limit. They had veered, in fact, entirely over to the other side of the road and were partly on its gravel shoulder, when they struck, head-on, Susan and her husband’s car. Since both cars were going at least at the speed limit they collided at a total speed of more than 220 km/hr. They collided on the passenger sides of both vehicles. The passenger in the ute was killed instantly. The driver of the ute is in hospital in intensive care but it is thought that he will never regain consciousness. Susan was air lifted to the Perth hospital but died on the operating table. Her husband is still in hospital with severe injuries, but it is thought that he will live.

After the initial collision two other cars crashed into Susan’s car but those drivers were not seriously hurt.

Susan’s husband attempted to brake, but couldn’t avoid the collision. The driver of the ute made no attempt to brake. Beer bottles were found in the ute and a bong. Other drugs have not been ruled out. Susan and her husband did absolutely nothing wrong, but, still, she is dead. A horrible, horrible tragedy.

This news makes it all that more tragic and heartbreaking. I stopped at a horrible DUI accident on the interstate here several years ago and I was so angry it was difficult for me to help the driver who caused it. My Mother in law was hit head on by a drunk driver also and amazingly survived...I just don't understand the disregard some people have for others lives.

Thanks for providing more information, Eluard. My heart goes out to Sudsy's husband. I can't imagine what he must be going through now.

I have always had zero tolerance for drink drivers since my first boyfriend found out a mother and five year old boy he used to babysit for had been killed by someone way over the limit. The boy would have been 27 now. What a waste.
I think anyone who is caught drink driving should go to jail, and lose their license permanently, unless there are highly extenuating circumstances. It is the height of selfishness and the height of stupidity.

Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. As if jasmine were a collection of beautiful paintings, beet hung it in the galleries of the nose, insured it against fire or theft, threw a party to celebrate it. Citron mailed the invitations." Damn... I hate drunk drivers with passion... and people that speed when they don't have conditions to do so... Both of my best friends parents died in a car crash made by a drunk driver and only her survived and only got a few scratches. Stuff like this upset me. Rest in peace...

This is so horribly, horribly wrong, I cannot even describe the anger I feel. Worse, I cannot stop imagining what it will be like for her husband when (and if) he regains consciousness. I wish wishing could undo this, wish that the wishes and prayers of strangers could take away even a tiny bit of the pain.

    It's a lovely thought maison!

Currently Susan's husband, Gary, is in Fremantle Hospital and it is thought that he may soon be discharged. (Good news!) Flowers or cards could be sent there, but you would want to know that the hospital would redirect them if they don't reach him before he leaves hospital. If you want to ring the hospital to find out, the number is 08 94313333.

    Thanks Eluard.

Since I learned about her passing, I too wondered, how and why. I've tried to google her name and obituaries to find out more. It was sometimes painful for me to re-read her posts and very heart-rendering to hear of little stories from others who were close to her. I, sometimes had trouble posting to this board these past days. The basenotes community is a small one, but close-knit one... and she was a shiny star who affected many people here.

This information does much to help put some closure to Susan's senseless death. Thank you so very much for the information Eluard.

My best wishes go to Gary for a speedy recovery and sincere condolences to her surviving family and friends, who must bear the heart-felt loss.

Sudsy, you were a great member. We didn't get enough of your precious time here in this world. Thank you for being a part of Basenotes. We will miss you. See you (smell you!) later, friend.

As for us, none of us chooses the time that we come into or go out of this life.
I have had a similar tragedy in my own life.
I know exactly how Sudsy's husband feels.

Eulard, is there any way you can print off these posts and save them for a few months to give to her husband when he has recovered sufficiently to read them? It might comfort him to know that she had so many friends. It would give him a glimpse into her life and her character.

I don't mean to burden you personally. If you could find his home address, anyone could mail them later this winter.

I understand how you feel, but I will pass on this, maybe leaving it to someone who is better placed.

The fact is that even though there is 95% chance that the gesture would be appreciated, there is a small chance that it would be regarded as an unwelcome intrusion. I'm not in any position to make that kind of call.

Its sad that people forget how careful one should be travelling at high speeds.
The two guys driving the ute were obviously completely oblivious to the fact that they were endangering themselves. Driving under the influence of anything (even cold meds) is completely irresponsible. The problem is when you are at higher speeds particularly you are a danger not only to yourself but those around you too. Unfortunately Susan and her husband were where they were at that point in time. It is sad. Whenever innocent people suffer it is sad.

Here in SA drunk driving is rife. I would estimate easily 70% of road users on a saturday afternoon and night are completely inebriated, A number of my friends have been at the receiving end and the guilty end of drunk driving accidents. Its unnecessary. Its a waste. I dont know why people do it.

Thoughts going out to Fremantle. The immediate kin must be gutted.
I can not comprehend trying to will one person to recovery while tring to understand the loss of another at the same time

What a tragedy. I never knew Susan personally, but I had started to PM her just in the second half of September. She was organising us Australian Basenoters - in what appears to be her usual effervescent manner - to get together to organise trips, decants, swaps and so forth. She seemed like a wonderful person from what I knew. I am so sorry for her family and husband. If there is anything we can do, please let us know. She will be missed by many.

oh No!!!!!!! I just now heard about this!! She and I had spoken on the phone several times and had just missed a get together due to both of us being down ill, she with a cold and I with my sore hip. I hadn't emailed or called her recently due to a step up in my work schedule. She was so bubbly and happy and helpful. I feel just awful that I got so busy and missed my chance to truly get to know her!!

    Greetings to all,

I have just read all the tributes to Sudsy, and they have touched the core of my heart. It is an interesting thing how 'like minds' form such an affiliation, even when the person is unsighted!

Susan's funeral is on Friday 19th, 4pm Perth Western Australian time. My profession is as a celebrant, but as I am also a close friend of Susan and Gary, it is going to be one heck of a challenge to try to keep myself together! However, Gary says it is what Susan would have wanted, so that is help enough!!

Gary is now out of hospital, and healing physically, though of course the emotional pain is tearing him apart.

I didn't go into too much detail in the initial announcement, as not everyone wants to know that much.

For those of you who do - the driver of the other car is still in a coma. There was some speculation as to whether or not he had suffered an aneurism. And as far as I know, at this stage, the police report is still inconclusive.

My husband and I wondered if it were possible to put an attached photo on the site for you all, or if not, you could email us at 'theramseys@iinet.net.au' and we can send one.

You have all discerned correctly that Susan was vibrant, bubbly, and humorous. She was wise enough to enjoy the truly simple and beautiful things in life. I am hurting deeply that my friend will not be sat at my table with us again. Only God knows how badly Gary must be feeling, and we promise to look after him.

I guess the best way we can honour her memory, is to go on in love, enjoy life, and take care of one another. That is what she would want for sure!!

    Thanks to all of you

    It feels so sudden.

    Rest in Peace, Sudsy.

    Hello Folks,
    HELP!!!!
Smelly Dolly here again. We are wanting to attach a photo of Susan here, on the site, but don't know how. Can anyone kindly adivse us please? The one we have is of her at a workmates wedding, unfortunately she is wearing sunglasses, but you can still get an idea. Her hair is short and bouncing back from cancer.

I will be wearing Dolce & Gabbana 'Light Blue' on Friday in her honour, as she bought me a bottle of it for taking her to chemotherapy, and it has become one of my favorite summer scents.

Heartfelt thanks to all the responses. It has soothed me, and Susan must just be absolutely chuffed!! People like your wonderful selves, who appreciate the good things life supplies, and who take the time to express themselves and communicate that appreciation with others, are what makes this life worthwhile. You are all truly magnificent.

    Looking forward to instruction
Lots of love to you all
    Smelly Dolly xxxxxxx

I just received five lovely pictures of Susan from Smelly Dolly. One I have posted where she belongs: on the first post of this thread.
Susan/Sudsy as she is in my mind: bouncing, happy, bubbly. The way she will live on in my memory forever.

For the other four pictures I have made a link:

    http://i23.tinypic.com/2w1z89f.jpg

    http://i23.tinypic.com/2zipi50.jpg

Tomorrow she will be buried and for the last time her loved ones will surround her. And so will the music.

Smelly Dolly told me what music will be played:
Lean On Me’ by Bill Withers, ‘Will You Remember Me?’ by Sarah McLaughlan and ‘Thank-you for the Days' by The Kinks.

I will remember her and tomorrow at 4pm Friday 19th Western Australia time I will listen to this music and feel close to her and to you.

Smelly Dolly, my deepest gratitude to you and your husband for sending us these pictures and my love and wishes of strength to Gary and you for tomorrow and the empty days that will follow.

    Hello lovely people,

Thanks a million to Riannon for her love and care in organising the pictures of Sudsy on this thread. And thank-you to all of you who gave us a helping hand with the pics. You have all really blown me away with your love and concern and friendship!

We are taking Susan's family from Canada over to meet Gary tonight, and we will tell them all about this special internet family at Basenotes. Isn't it strange that at such a sad time as this, the cream rises to the surface, and the one silver lining in the cloud is to feel the pull of brotherly and sisterly love?! I am quite choked up to tell you the truth! Your energy will be with us all tomorrow.

    Lots of love to all

What gorgeous pictures of a beautiful woman. I love the last one of the Susan and Gary - lots of joy there.

Thank you so much for posting these.
I have Sarah McLachlan and will be playing it tomorrow. Thinking of them along with all my basenotes folks.

I guess its better to let the tears flow than to hold them back.

    Thanks so much SD,

I love the last pic of Susan and Gary. The expression on Sudsy's face is always what I had imagined of her whenever she posts to this forum.

This is terrible news about Sudsy. I was thinking of her the other day as I am still waiting for my Montale - which I ordered after her heads up about the sweet prices. I was going to send her a sample of 'Sweet Oriental Dream' and maybe do some swaps with her.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends in Australia and worldwide through Basenotes.
