Unilever May Sell Elizabeth Arden for $300 Million, Times of London Says

Unilever NV, the No. 1 maker of food and soap products, is in talks
to sell most of the Elizabeth Arden cosmetics unit for about $300 million to
French Fragrances Inc., The Times of London said, citing unnamed industry
sources. Unilever, which in February named Elizabeth Arden as one of the
1,200 brands it planned to sell or reorganize to focus on its 400 leading
product lines, wouldn't confirm or deny the report. French Fragrances
spokesman Joel Ronkin also declined to comment. ``We aim to find a solution
before the end of the year,'' said Unilever spokesman Tom Gordijn. He
declined to say whether the company was in talks with French Fragrances.
Unilever is keen to sell the Elizabeth Arden division, including the Dame
Elizabeth Taylor perfume range, because it has a wealthy though dowdy image,
The Times reported. The Anglo-Dutch company is trying to close the gap with
rivals such as Nestle SA, whose first-half net income rose 35 percent this
year while Unilever's fell 4.2 percent.
