    Default Green!!!!

Okay, I really want a GREEN fragrance, like a knocks you socks off mossy grassy GREEN scent. But, I am trying to cool my extensive internet shopping, so please reccomend things I could easily find (I live in Des Moines, Iowa by the way). So please help me on my quest for the ultimate GREEN fragrance!

    Thanks in advance,

Well, I'd say Mugler Cologne or Creed Original Vetiver (if you have a Neiman Marcus near you). Both are very green to me.

You have got to try Miracle Homme L'Aquatonic. It smells as if you put your nose right down to the ground after mowing the lawn and throw some cilantro/jasmine in the mix. Almost perfect re-creation of fresh cut grass for the topnotes.

I totally second the Creeds Green Valley, Original Vetiver...

and raise them Eau de Cartier Extreme, a masterpiece... like fresh cut grass and flower stems in ice cold water in a museum crystal vase.

A more mundane green is 212 Man... I get a good helping of grass clippings in that.

There always is the obvious choice of the original Polo (in the Green Bottle). A dominating best seller back in the late 70's into the 80's, for a reason. It was and still is very good. It can be easily had in most locals, has great longevity and as long as you don't over apply is really a wonderful fragrance. I prefer Yatagan to Polo's Green in most instances when I want a green fragrance but you wanted something which is easily found locally.

Does this mean you want suggestions for things that you could walk into a shop and buy it off the shelf? What are your shopping options in Des Moines? Google says you've got JC Penney (some of these have Sephora inside, is that available to you?), Dillards, Kohl's, Sears, and Target. Anything more upscale? Any independent shops?
    --------------------------------------
oh yeah, now I see you've got sephora; that's going to help

Give these a try if you find them at sephora (my top recs in bold):

Givenchy Very Irresistible for Men (lots going on in this one besides the minty green notes)
    Guerlain Vetiver
    Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca
Ralph Lauren Polo (original, in green bottle)
    Thierry Mugler Cologne

Sorry if I'm underestimating your shopping options (or misunderstanding your request)

    good luck!

That's pretty much it for Des Moines: Sephora, Dillard's, JC Penney, Younkers, Kohl's, TJ Maxx. But there is a dept. store here called Von Maur, it's upscale, not as big as Neimans or Saks but it's almost as good; they have a lot of Creeds as well as your standard dept. store brands.

    Been there, asked that.

But cutting internet shopping? That's hard. Des Moines karma, huh? Let us know if you can find Griff's and Pluran's recommendations over there---Damn, now I've got to try those myself !

Well, besides Scentiments there's Scented Monkey on the www which let's you buy 1ml vials to try out. Haven't visited there for a long time. Check and see if they have:

A+ Sophisticated green: -------------------Lowe Para Hombre
The Everlasting C+ green act------------Montana Pour Homme (2001)
    A+ Fern/ Woods green----------------------Versace L'Homme
A+ Mineral Spring Green-------------------Vetiver Creed (the 1948, Not the 'Original)
    B+ Forest Green-------------------------------Creed Epicea

And read the reviews here at BN

Or simplify your quest and walk into a L'Occitane shop, if there's one around--you'll probably find something you really like. Good luck!

    Cheers,

I think I know what you are looking for as my quest in fragrances began with look for that erfect green myself. Allow me to separate and put things into perspective in my opinion. First, there are two fragrances that without question represent the color green. In other words, they smell as one would imagine the color would convey. There are the best and my two favs for this:

    1. Apen by Coty: Green mint that is further deepened by pine and smoothed by musk. This is far superior to Creed's Epicea which after the initial burst of "dental office" spice, you get a fresh pine only to be ruined by ambergris which dominates the drydown.

    2. Paul Smith Men: Someone mentioned this already and I agree. It is totally green and masculine. No bother to depict the notes because it smells fabulous! If I had to guess, I would say it has gorgeous green notes with carnation, woods, and musk. Very elegant.

    3. Avon Wild Country Outback 2 (sadly discontinued): A very green drydown.

Now, there are other renditions of green that smells like a variation of what the color could be and are labled by myself as inferior to the afformentioned if a true green smell is what you are after. A few of these would be:

    4. Hermes Un Jardin en Meditereanee: A very minty, woody fragracne. It smells very green due to the mint and woods. It is lovely but not as close to the way the color "green" would smell as my initial listings. This fragrance was carbon-copied by Miller et Barteux's green, green, and green.

    5. Paul Smith Story: This smells green but more like Pert shampoo. A soapy smell of green that has more depth than Mugler's Colonge.

    6. Creed Original Vetiver: This is green but veres off of what the color green might smell like. There are spices and other ingredients that subtract from what the color may smell like. It is still a beautiful fragrance but may not be what you want if you want something to represent a true green regarding the color.

    7. Mugler Colonge: again, this is a soapy green.

Lastly, there are fragrances that are simply in the "green" family but don't represent what the color smells like. Fragrances in this family are considered green due to their coniferous or plant ingredients. Fragrances like this could be like:

    8. Green Irish Tweed: A beautiful fragrance but despite it's name, does not smell green. It is more or less woods and ambergris. Nothing at all like Paul Smith Men or Aspen.

    9. vetiver fragrances like creed vetiver 1948: citrus, vetiver root, ambergris. It does not have a green smell like you may be looking for.

    10. others such as bvlgari ph which was carbon-copied by cdg vetiveru

There you have it. This is my opinion on green fragrances and I hope you find this helpful.

Totally agreed. I loved it the first time I sampled it, but that was a long time ago. Ordered a sample again, this time for my girlfriend who was (and still is) looking for a green fragrance. And what was I thinking? Not only is it a blatant ripoff, it truely doesn't smell neither green or interesting anymore. Weird how it works.

And neither is it easy to find...

But these could be available: Carolina Herrera 212 Men, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria: Herba Fresca, Guerlain Vetiver, Paul Smith Story, Thierry Mugler Cologne.

The GGGG #3 is extremely similar to Un Jardin Mediteranee. The UJM is just a tad more fig prominent, but they share that same sparkly, green cedar accord. Virgilio I have not smelled but I think it's basil prominent (very little basil is in UJM and GGGG#3) so Virgilio is more like Baime by MPG.

    If you want green:

    Kiton Men: Classy, deep green

Bvlgari PH: A light green with tea note

Eternity: A clean, general purpose green

    Mugler Colonge: Soapy Green

Paul Smith Story: Better than Mugler colonge with a deeper, soapy green accord similar to pert shampoo but a tad more synthetic than Bvlgari PH.

Creed OV: A sophisticated green that mugler colonge wished it could be

Note: Stay away from La Base. The directory reviews were spot on. It is pure synthetic crap. It induced a nauseating headache and the only accord I found tolerable was in the extreme drydown but the whole thing is too insufferable to get to it.

+1 for Epicea, Pino Silvestre, Bowling Green, Grey Flannel, Eau D'Orange Verte, Francesco Smalto PH (I'm sure there's some I've forgotten).

Some are fougeres, some are chypres, some are mainly citrus and even a few could be considered aquatic, but they all register to me as green - or at least a unique shade thereof.
