Thread: 3 no-no notes

    Default 3 no-no notes

Ok, it´s been a while since we dropped the axe on our least favourite notes and it would be fun to see if the most dreaded notes from the past are exchanged or remain the same. So let´s hear it: three notes in fragrances you could easily live without.
Mine would be tonka, benzoin and mint. Let the thrashing commence!

Naturally I don`t dismiss scent automatically if they contain these notes, but it sure can make me cautious with suspicious mind.

    1. basil - it stinks like "unwashed" on me, not at all in a sexy way
    2. aquatic notes / Calone - love the ocean, but just can't stand this
    3. The basenotes in 90% of mass market/designer frags released in the last ten years (basically always the same lame cocktail of widgetwood and magicmusk, aka "Hey Joe, what's the cheapest synthetic on the market right now?" )

I don't care for ink notes, for example in SMW or CdG 2. A (too) strong presence of either orange (TdH, Fahrenheit) or lavender (BdP) also bothers me.

Wow, you're right, basil does have a dirtiness about it. Somehow I like smelling a bit funky, though. Give me Virgillo and a Florida summer!

    My top 3 no-no's.

    Hmmm...I can't think of a third.

Vanilla and aniseed in large quantities. I also dislike many fruit notes, especially pear. I have to agree with TGL; synthetic white musk he mentioned must be the worst thing that have ever happened to perfumery. Aquatic notes are also generally quite annoying.

I'll second vanilla in large quantities.
    Chocolate
    Watermellon

I'm somewhat suprised mint is being mentioned so often. I find it adds a clean finish without being soapy. However, from what i've sampled I only recall mint in Live Jazz and L'Eau de L'Artisan. What else presents a mint note worthy enough for such despise?

    1) Cumin
    2) Coconut or Pineapple (I don't do tropical)
    3) Any Boozey notes (Rum especially, and Brandy)

Generally myrrh, coconut and "clean" musks are my least favourite. Myrrh just doesn't usually work with my chemistry, I associate coconut with tackiness for some reason, and clean (synthetic) musks remind me of conventional laundry detergent.

I also really don't care for fruit fragrances in general (and almost all "fruit" notes are artificial because there's no way to get an essential oil from most fruits, except for citrus).

And like TheGoodLife said, I'm not too fond of aquatics (a molecule called "calone" is usually responsible for that note).

I wouldn't know a note/chemical if I drank it. That said, I know from experience and extrapolation that lavender and musk don't agree with me at all.

    There are exceptions - Virgin Island Water's coconut note is really nice;
    Carnal Flower is amazing also

I do not like the coconut note in Philosykos

I've found Chocolate doesn't really work on me
Additionally, I haven't had a lot of luck with Nutmeg in scents

that's about it. once upon a time I would've said Rose, but it's amazing how one's nose changes over time.

Heavy doeses of orange, fruity, and pepper notes are by far my least favorite. Also, I have learned I am not a fan of tea notes so I tend to avoid fragrances with these types of notes in them.
