Default Replacing Giorgio for Men (R.I.P.)

Giorgio for Men (1984) by Giorgio Beverly Hills was my signature scent for more than twenty years. Although it was discontinued sometime in the mid-1990s that did not affect me until recently because I had purchased fifteen bottles from the manufacturer at the time.

Now I am on a ‘Don Quixote type’ quest to find a suitable replacement. I have found many wonderful fragrances and have expanded my knowledge and appreciation of the perfumers' art.

Somewhere in my research, I learned that Giorgio for Men was classified in the Mossy Woods (Chypre) – Classical family. Personally, I consider it to be a rich fragrance (but my nose isn’t very sophisticated). I centered my search on chypres and have gradually explored other families ----- but I still have not found my new holy grail.

Rather than continuing to tilt at windmills, I am hoping that some of you may remember Giorgio for Men and perhaps could help me focus my search.

    Thanks for letting me vent!

Instantly came to my mind: Antaeus by Chanel. A rich, Woody-Chypre scent.
    What's your idea about it?

When i first smelled Narcisso Rodriguez, it reminded me of something i couldn't put my finger on, until much later when i read that it was based on the 80s power scents. That's when i realized there was a very big similarity to Giorgio of the 80s.

    Hi msi_21!

I agree with you that Antaeus is a rich woody scent - I have it and it is one of my new favorites.

Along with Guerlain, Chanel has become one of my favorite houses. In addition to Antaeus, Egoiste and Pour Monsieur (not Concentree) are also winners in my book.

Giorgio had carnation, orange, cinnamon and a touch of vanilla among its notes. I am not sure but maybe it's the citrus and florals that I am missing when it comes to Antaeus - even so I really like Antaeus and it is certainly on my short list of possible replacements for Giorgio.

I appreciate you thoughtfulness in helping me move forward on this!

I found a darn good knock off of Giorgio for men - actually it is clone of the VIP Special Reserve. The scent is deep and very long lasting like the original. I hate to post and advertise here on Basenotes but IM me if your interested and I'll pass the sellers name along.

Sad has I am...I actually still own my VIP Special Reserve bottle - it has a screw off sprayer so I refill it with the great knock off I found...at least I can pretend like its 1989...

    Hi dreamchaser!

I have seen Narcisso Rodriquez at our not-quite-local Saks but have not sampled it yet. I have an appointment in that area in a couple of weeks - now I will have another excuse (like I needed one) to stop in and say hello to my favorite SA.

    Thanks for your guidance!

Thumbs up Re: Replacing Giorgio for Men (R.I.P.)

    Thanks scentemental!

As always your caring and thoughtfulness for other people comes through in your actions and your words.

You certainly have given me a lot of fragrances to consider. I enjoy the research as much as I do the actual fragrances - thanks in advance for keeping me occupied.

I am familiar with only three of the ones on your list. I have tested Tiffany for Men and really like it. I have been tracking it online but haven't ordered it yet (it is not available around here). I have Halston Z-14 and Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui (vintage). I like them both but my wife (the one who has to put up with me the most and whose opinion often counts more than my own) thinks Pour Lui is just ...... "nice" - a death sentence if I have ever heard one!

I am looking forward to your email.

Thanks again for your insight and guidance!

    Regards

Thank you all for sending me on what I know will be an enjoyable journey. Just as an update, I want you to know that as a direct result of this thread, I bought Lauder for Men which is a scent I never would have found on my own! Many thanks to you and all of Basenotes

If you are interested, there is a current thread on Lauder for Men: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=200528

The only "replacement" for the incomparable Giorgio for Men is finding another vintage bottle from places like eBay, other BNers, etc. I couldn't imagine ever being without a bottle (or five).

I wonder if this is a old formula, it should not be oldest but is this any good?

While not the vintage juice as it is from EA fragrances, based on the mossy green juice color it is the "good" earlier reissue that smells like the vintage juice.

Giorgio For men is already for years easily to get everywhere here and costs €15 for 118ml. The relaunch of this stuff (and also 'Red') was 3 or 4 years ago, after being discontinued for years in which prices rose up to €300 on ebay!.
Stuff is, as I read, pretty close to vintage and imo smells really good and is still a patchouli-honey-amber-oakmoss powerhouse for sure!
My Top '10' : (In no particular order)

    - Dolce & Gabbana: Pour Homme (vintage)
    - Paco Rabanne: Pour Homme (vintage)
    - Loewe: Esencia/Pour Homme/Solo/7
    - Davidoff: Leather Blend Edp
    - Dior: Eau Sauvage Parfum
    - MPG: Santal Noble
    - Guerlain: Vetiver
    - Van Cleef & Arpels: Pour Homme
    - Hermes: Terre d'Hermes
    - YSL: Kouros (Fraicheur)

It *was* pretty close to the vintage, until the more recent reformulation destroyed the dry-down...

After looking through a load of posts from BN and other review sites. My believe is the search for the last of reminding older juice needed to be carried out. I have found and ordered it, but I still need to keep my finger cross as the eBay seller may sell some juices not as description in eBay.

I am happy to get 2 bottles of old juice from ebay. My first impression is woody, spicy, herbal, and very smooth. The top notes is about same as end note, which is nice and masculine. And I would call it darker version of Rive Gauche which is my favorite masculine scent. And it share about same DNA as original Polo green and Zino.
Gorgeous long lasting which 2 sprays may be too high projection for me.
Thanks drseid for helping and I can see why it is number 2 in your list.
