Well, I'm still making my way through the 'mens classics', but from those I have tried, I pick:

    Yatagan by Caron
    Heritage by Guerlain
    Aramis by Aramis
Armani Pour Homme by Giorgio Armani
    Azzaro Pour Homme by Azzaro

Had to think hard about this, but here it goes.

In my opinion, just having these five would make a perfect balanced wardrobe:

    Chanel pour monsieur (vintage)
    Creed Vintage Tabarome
    Dior Eau Sauvage
    Guerlain Jicky
    Van Cleef pour homme

    Others:
Creed Santal Imperial, Creed Bois du Portugal, Czech & Speake no. 88, Guerlain Habit Rouge EDC, Floris No. 89, Ungaro II, Givenchy Vetyver, Caron pour homme, Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet, Gucci pour homme (1978), Versace L'Homme....

As far as I'm not familiar enough with lots of the perfumes, I couldn't list them. But it is something very intersting that the name like
    -Pour un Homme
    -Brut
    -POLO (original green)
    -Acqua di Gio
    -Le Male
are rare in this thread. I consider these ones as "should try at least once"!
These are the scents which truely affected the fashion and perfume's world.

My experience is rather limited and I am learning a lot by paying attention to everyone else's comments. At this point, my five would be:

    Yatagan - Caron
    Azzaro pour Homme - Azzaro
    JHL - Aramis
Chanel pour Monsieur (1955) - Chanel
    Antaeus - Chanel
    Equipage - Hermes
    Heritage - Guerlain
    Vetiver - Guerlain
    Polo (1978) - Ralph Lauren
    Zino Davidoff - Davidoff
    Old Spice - P&G/Shulton

Okay - I ended up with more than five but I wouldn't omit any of these!

This IS hard. Oh well, as of this post I'll limit it to:

    1) Azzaro Pour Homme - I can't get enough of this 70s classic. And yes, I DO wear it to work. One spray's my limit, though two would do it if you're headed to the disco. Serious sillage and not at the expense of quality or class, albeit a bit scruffy around the edges in the best way possible.

    2) Lagerfeld Classic - Another great from '78, its name is no coincidence in my book. I actually wore this as a teenager (!), though it was in a little sample bottle and I didn't go overboard thankfully (at least I didn't think I did...). It had the art deco lettering, which I miss but the frag is as good as I remember it. Incense-y, mossy, leathery, powdery - contradictions in terms? Then you haven't really smelled this one - applied with caution of course. Another grad of the single-spray school, two only for a Halloween party when you're going as Disco Stu.

    3) Gucci Pour Homme - A frag from 2003 is already a classic? Not so heretical I think, but I'll try and make a case all the same. Tom Ford et al. may have taken their inspiration from another place and time, but there's no shame in using the big, bad, high-volume men's frags of yesteryear as a creative springboard. I wish more would. And yes, it's not as complex as the aforementioned two to me, but as many an old sage once said: So what? This cedar/frankincense/amber/leather/ginger/pepper powerhouse just plain smells good to me - REAL good, not to mention long-lasting. It has the sort of restraint one would expect of a more modern frag, though it is far from a modest wallflower. Confident without having to shout, it speaks in a rational and pleasant mezzo-forte. Well done.

    4) Puig Agua Lavanda - It's listed as unisex, but since Ol' Blue Eyes was its most famous user I'd say that means there's an abundance of manliness here. Lavender (of course), but also some moss and tonka with a wispy but refreshing citrus up top gives this all it really needs. Once it settles in it's a smooth ride to where ever fate takes you, not much in the sillage department but lasts surprisingly long, much like Royall Lyme (another classic) though they smell nothing alike. Cheap and very cheerful, this one deserves MUCH more attention, and not just from Basenoters.

    5) Tabac Original - This little unassuming fragrance has a whole line of products devoted to spreading its message of spicy/floral, post-shaving bliss. As much as I like Old Spice and Aqua Velva and other classic cheapies, this one wins big in the quality and complexity department. Carnations, citrus and musk with a tinge of just-right ambery sweetness (oddly, no tobacco to my nose and is not hurt in the least by its absence) is just what's needed at the start of a potentially hectic day to assuage a just-shaved face and soothe jangled nerves. I use the aftershave and it's strong enough to hang with the EDTs, plus it actually soothes a just-back-from-battle mug like few aftershaves can. Did I mention how cheap this was (and not in the quality sense)?
Loves of Late: Agua Lavanda, Eau Sauvage, Gendarme, Guerlain Vetiver, Guerlain EdC Imperiale, Ivoire de Balmain, Kenzo PH, Mitsouko, Royall Lyme, Tabac Original
