Default What exactly does "Pour Homme" mean?

I never really understood what the term "Pour Homme" (or PH) actually means. I assume it's in Latin or French, can anybody explain this to me?

    Thanks

It is French and it means 'for men'

A lot of the times you wont see any ending to womens perfumes because they are the original scent. When they add something like pour Homme it is because they made a new version for men. That is not always the case but I find that to be the way it works most of the time.

And just to follow up on EnYvuS' post, sometimes you'll see pour femme, which of course is for her.

How do you pronoune "pour homme"

The closest I can explain in writing is:

    "Poor Ohm"

That is to say, the "Pour" is less of an Aussie "pour" eg: 'pour a glass of milk', and more drawn out as in "poor" with the "r" almost disappearing altogether.

As for "Homme", drop the "H" and the last "e", and you're left with "Ohm" - a bit like the Indian swami meditation mantra!

d'Homme is rarely used variant with a similar meaning, as in Claude Montana's Montana Parfum d'Homme and Messages d'Homme by Mariella Burani

I often find myself getting corrected by my sister for mispronouncing it.

That is totally incorrect. "Pour Homme" actually means 'for women'. If you are using a "Pour Homme" perfume, chances are you are using an overtly feminine floral, most likely marketed toward Britney Spears-loving pre-teens. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you may have to toss your entire fragrance collection in the circular file, or donate it to your young niece.

    j/k!

Irony in the Just Starting Out section? Even though this is pretty transparent, it's also rather sarcastic. Nice way to make a fella feel welcome...

Irony, in its place, is perfectly fab. But in the Just Starting Out section of the forum, it can cause confusion if it's out there without a nice clear smiley on the end of it. Just sayin' ...

Yeah, I read this as a pretty patronizing post, too. Keep in mind, somethin, that irony, humor, sarcasm, etc can sometimes be difficult to convey online without the use of other cues.

I thought I should just add a bit to this... the 'homme' is actually pronounced with something somewhere between an open o and an a, so more like the o in 'on'. The sound is actually a nasal vowel, but there's nothing like that in English, but it kinda sounds like awhm if you spell it out in English pronounciation
