Default Clary Sage in Men's Fragrances

    Clary sage oil...

"... The oil is variously described as having a fragrance between Balsam of Tolu and Muscatel grapes, or as akin to a mixture of musk, ambergris, neroli, and lavender."

This note is prominent in Antaeus, Cabochard, and L'Heure Bleue. It's one of my favorite notes.

Does anyone else especially like this, and if so, in which fragrances? I love it in Dunhill for Men (1934), Platinum Égoïste, and Zino Davidoff. It's also nice in Laguna
Homme and Miller Harris Terre de Bois.

What others float you guys' boat?

I am also a big fan of the sage note in scent. For cultural reasons I have experienced many different kinds of sage, from the freshly picked plant to handmade essential oils. Some scents that feature clary sage that I enjoy, in addition to those you've listed, include

    Patou Pour Homme
    Tuscany per Uomo Forte
    Loewe para Hombre
    Monsieur Rochas
    Salvador Dali pour Homme
    Lauder for Men

I love it--couldn't pick it out of a crowd, but most of my favorite frags have it, so I love it.

What phase of the pyramid does the sage note usually play the biggest role in?

I can think of a couple. What about New West for men and Tauer's Lonestar Memories? Both have tons of sage.

Oh, and I believe sage is a top note.

It seems to show up in the head or heart note the most. Of the scent pyramids in the Basenotes Directory for the fragrances that I own, it shows up as a base note in only one: Laguna Homme.

Comme des Garçons Ouarzazate features a very prominent sage note.

I forgot about Ouarzazate -- I really love this one. At first, I thought it was a little rough, harsh, but later I came to find it soothing and deep.

Clary Sage and Sage aren't the same thing.

Cacharel Pour Homme has a decent Clary Sage note.

Clary Sage is good for stress.

    --------------------------------

Clary Sage and Tarragon are common chypre notes - Patou Pour Homme is a good example of those two notes. Clary Sage tones a scent and reduces a harsh impression by imparting a mellow and sweet note.

D&G, Salvador Dalí pH, and Ungaro III all have it in the top note. Ungaro III is a recent acquisition of mine, I look forward to wearing it soon!

Weird, I never detected it in some mentioned. However, I feel the note is crystal clear in encens et lavende.

I think I understand what clary sage smells like today, wearing Pour L' Homme by Cacharel for the 1st time.

It has an airy, almost oxygenated spaciousness that softens the aromatic and herbal notes. But in a very natural way. Extremely elegant stuff.

I *love* the clary sage note in Versace Pour Homme. Of course, I honestly love every phase of that scent.

I love the isolated note, too. According to The Goodscents Company, it functions as a top/mid note - longer lasting than most top notes and not as long lasting as say, rose or geranium or any number of other mid notes.

Jaime, if you can get your hands on some vintage Antilope by Weil, you will be rewarded with a clary sage note utilized to perfection in a very unique blend. The parfum de toilette (close to an edp) version displays it quite the best.

I have to agree that clary sage is very nicely utilized in both Ungaro III and Cacaheral Pour l'Homme.

Clary sage can get medicinal if used poorly.

I'll have to look into some of the others mentioned.

I believe Clary Sage may be the note that sours some fragrances for me. Platinum Egoiste is a nearly perfect green scent except for the fact that it sours out in the drydown, theres a similar problem for my nose with Versace pour homme and L'eau D'Issey pour homme, both of which contain Clary Sage.

This also could be attributed to the Geranium note, which all three also contain, and my nose is not yet experienced enough to distinguish the two.
