    Default Comprehensive list of Similar Colognes?

    I was wondering if there is a list on here or an earlier thread with a comprehensive list of colognes that smell very similar to each other? I see various threads mentioning them (some recently started by myself), but no one place that lists them all. And when I state "very similar," I mean an almost spot on "separated at birth" type of doppleganger. Not a casual "reminds me of" type of comparison.

    If there isn't one already, care to add to this one?

    I'll start off with:

    Chevignon = Polo Crest (these two are SO close that it makes me wonder about formula patents!)
    Azul (Anchor Blue) = JPG Le Male
    Sean Jean Unforgivable = Creed Silver Mountain Water or Millésime Impérial (depending on whom you talk to).

    Note: the use of "=" is a relative term, as there's no accounting for smell.

    Bois du Portugal = Guerlain Derby

    Tsar = Jazz
    Azzaro PH = Aramis Tuscany
    Goutal Eau du Sud = Eau Sauvage

    To me, Silver Mountain Water and Millesime Imperial smell as similar as bacon and ice cream. I don't know why people always say they smell alike. Oh well. I smell good.

    WOW. That thread is exactly what I am looking for. If a mod (do we have mods here?) wants to merge this thread with that one, I'd completely understand.

    I'll do Creeds and Bonds (sorry, some are repeats)

    Bois du Portugal = PdN New York = Guerlain Heritage
    Himalaya = Paco Rabanne XS
    Original Vetiver = Thierry Mugler Cologne
    Original Santal = Joop!
    Acier Aluminium = (same family as Guerlain Heritage, L'air du Desert Marocain)
    Virgin Island Water - suntan lotion = Marc Jacobs for Men

    Bond No.9:

    Which one? There's a "PS," "Design," "Casual," etc. I've seen that comparison before and can never find the right one that smells like Obsession.

    In the other thread someone mentioned that:

    Rykiel Homme = Horizon.

    I'd like to try that one since Horizon smells great to me but gives me a massive migraine. I've just done a search and there seems to be a Rykiel Homme and a Rykiel Man (different bottles). Are they the same thing? Does it really smell like Horizon?

    Also, does Claiborne Sport really smell like Ralph Lauren Safari?

    Finally, someone mentioned in a review on here that:

    So Delicious for Men by Gale Hayman = Hugo Dark Blue.

    I can't agree with that one at all. SD smells like a mess and has none of the Suede smell of HDB. There's a reason it's $14.99 at Loehmann's and Burlington Coat Factory.

    Interesting thread, as well as the one linked to.

    In the cases where I know both of the more commonly available scents which are supposedly similar, with the exception of XS and Himalaya, I don't agree with any of them.

    The really similar ones to my nose are some of the Fred Hayman ones, which to my nose appear to be good, longer lasting copies of the genuine one, e.g.
    273 Indigo = Bvlgari Blv
    Touch = Brut
    Hollywood = Perry Ellis 360 degrees

    Wow...this is WAY too subjective of a subject...I disagree with so many of the comparisons here.

    Exactly.. no two are perfectly alike, and many of the "equivalences" pointed out are about mere similarities, but some (maybe even most) I don't get at all....

    ... But then, I'm a person who delights in the small differences. All vetiver fragrances are alike in at least one way, but each one is unique in several ways. I tend to focus on the uniqueness of scents rather than their superficial similarities. Maybe that's why I don't get threads like this.

    One thing I don't appreciate, however, is a house putting out multiple variations of a scent that are all so similar as to be off-putting. That's just profit gouging. Mind you, it's not the variations I dislike, but the venal motive.

    Many people (in various threads) have said that Halston's Unbound is similar to AdG. I bought a bottle for $10 at TJMaxx, and gave it a try the other evening. Yes, there is some of the same "aqua-ness" but I also find that it's middle notes are more like Bvlgari Aqva. Unbound can stand on it's own with both of these, and different enough (on me) to be worth the $10!!

    By the way, since Himalaya is one of my favorites, and XS is supposed to be close to it, I shall have to try to find a bottle (Himalaya kills my wallet!).

    For the record: they don't. I admire Yatagan (though I hardly have occasion to wear it), but find Eau des Iles utterly repulsive. There's no coffee in Yatagan, nor any cigarette smoke, both of which feature prominently in Eau des Iles.

    Thanks, that makes sense. Eau des Îles struck me immediately as nasty, whereas Yatagan took a little longer. If forced to wear one, I'd choose Yat. I was really surprised by Eau des Îles, given that I love Santal Noble. Looking at the descriptions, I expected more similarities.

    My Santal Noble will be arriving mid-December, I can't wait! I ordered it online and had it sent to a friend in the US who's coming over for a visit. It sure is odd that buying French perfume in the US is a hell of a lot cheaper than getting it here - just a couple of countries away... A lot of that has to do with the current exchange rates, clearly, but even before the dollar dropped, frags from Europe were cheaper in the US.

    My experience was similar. I had expected a rich, smooth, woody tobacco with some gourmand overtones from Eau des Iles, and instead I got coffee soaked with lighter fluid burning in a very dirty old ashtray. Oh well, a lot of people love it, so who am I to complain?

    The middle of Versace Eau Fraiche and CK Euphoria for Men are pretty much the same. The big difference is VEF has a beginning, middle and end, while CKE starts and finishes the same. At least on me. If I had to do it over again, I'd get Versace because of this.
