    Signoricci

I dream of soft, clean citrus
    Of lofty suns so bright
    Reflecting off blue waters
    Their supple rays give life
    Turning flowers into fruit
    With fragrant, fluid flesh
    Its perfume stains my fingers
    The misty peel, its breath
    To capture this dream, bottled
    Would prove a daunting task
Yet to gift it me for poetry
    My thanks shall 'ever last

    Black XS

    Oh, Black XS
Smells so good, i wear it with excess
When people smell it, the feelings they express...
    The aroma's a success
They ask me what it is
But i always make them guess
    The notes in perfect balance
    No more, no less
Yes i own many a fragrance, but i do have to confess
I will always have a soft spot for Black XS.
    --------------------------------------
    New Haarlem...

I have a bond with New Haarlem
From the way it smelled from the sample
Top notes of lavender, bergamot, green leaves
Made me almost get down on my knees
Middle notes of coffee and cedarwood
    Are so irresistibly good
Basenotes of amber, vanilla and tonka
Would be the pride of Willy Wonka
Yes i will forever have a bond
    With New Haarlem, my darling.

Ok, so here's a first attempt!...

    B*men

    Some might call him vulgar
    and other say they tire
    of his fruity, spicy center
    thats burning like a fire

    He has an older brother
    with DNA in kind
but what B*men has to offer
    In A*men you won't find...

Yes I speak of a hero
    Whose heart is shining true
In a starscape pounced with silver
On a night of endless blue

Cheers for spreading some Xmas cheer! Happy Holiday's y'all!

    To Xeryus Rouge:

    The cactus and kumquat queen
She is the most beautiful of creatures
A simple man like I have seen
I cannot make out all of her wonderful features
For my senses are not so refined
But I believe her to be the best a man can find
All I ask is for one special night
With her beauty shimmering clear and bright
Please let me receive this gift
To give my life a needed lift.

    The Perfect Cup

    One perfect orange autumn day,
I took a stroll, to my favourite café.
That magic bean, of warmth and love,
    Aroma descending from above.
My favorite cup, with sugar and cream,
    Oh the Starbucks lover’s dream!
But oh, what’s this, spilled on my shirt?
Smells so good, I’ll give a squirt
    Of New Harlaam, juice divine,
To recall the day I felt so fine.

    Jazz

The musicians review their chord progressions
Some flash back to childhood music lessons
One practices a riff, another sets a stand light
Fluid minds recall so many rehearsal sessions
The tempo is set and the players alight
All are thinking: This is my night

The beauty of jazz is that it's mostly unmapped
Creativity sparkles and the audience is rapt
The piece evolves, morphs, jumps, and roams
A gushing spring has finally been tapped
And after the song, the director proudly intones
"That piece was inspired by YSL's Jazz cologne"

    ---------------------
    Black XS (well, obviously ):

    A hint of strawberries
    Splashed with fresh cream
    Is the essence that carries
    Faint echoes of praline

    Though gothic in name
    And in a black suit
    It remains unashamed
    Of its stylish sweet fruit

    I have no goth style
    Nor wiccan young loves
But I'm all hot for this one
    In its sexy black gloves

    -----------------------------------
    Signoricci:

    I rose in the morning
    Sunshine on my face
    And she smiled with
    A langorous grace

Her skin smelled of fine soap
    Her hair, of lemon flowers
    As our moments together
    Stretched into hours

    I would take the credit
But no need to be preachy
    I owed my good fortune
    To wearing Signoricci!

Signoricci is such a classic scent, I believe it deserves a Shakespearean sonnett.

    To Signoricci

If thou hast tired of lemon and of lyme
Know now Signoricci! No pledging burst
Which falters in a passing moments’ time,
Or dries down from the decent to the worst.

O no, it is an ever fixéd mark
Of taste on those who own rather than claim it.
Agrumes and flowr’s and musk build up an arc
So faultless, time is at a loss to maim it.

Outranking whate’er in its purview fell,
    Torino-born designer’s Lord of scents,
It's glory merely aims to serve you well,
    Providing substance always, ne’er pretense.

If this be error, which Turin forbid,
I ne'er inhaled, nor no man ever did.

    O’de Twahlet

    Surely CB must be right
This friend called scent is surely life
Soaked bark, warm rain, wet pavement
The past, the future, mostly the present

Asking, “is today the one I like your musing?”
Responding, “no, there’s too many more for using”
“I like the apples, peach, the spices too.
The essence of these reminds me of you.”

    My err apparent, remedy evident
Though once t’was mine, now another’s enjoyment
Too much drink, folly or merry?
Better to be remembered for a little Burberry.

    "New Haarlem"

Warm and intoxicating in this smoky room.
    Cold outside but not here.
My eyes close and the room embraces me.
Men in tailored suits and tilted hats pass by.
Women, wonderful women in thier arms moving to the music.
Jazz fills the room seducing me.
Tobacco, whiskey, and perfume permeate this space.
I open my eyes and I am alone.
    My suitcase on the floor.
There are ghosts here, lovely ghosts!
My New Haarlem, My new home.
There is much living to do...

I dreamed of you once, Mr. Ricci,
    A line of lemons rising
    Sharp through an oceanic parade.
    A seam of timeless thoughts
    Floating on bergamot,
    Defying oughts with limes.
A citric sermon on themes entwined
    All enshrined within your bottle
    Aligned with that most divine sign;
    Signor, your signature.

::With much apology to Samuel Taylor Coleridge::

    In Basenotesland did Anthony
    A stately pleasure-gift decree
Where New Haarlem, the fragrant river, ran
    Through spraycaps measureless to man
    Onto a funless me.

So twice five piles of fetid ground
With nads and hairs were girdled round
And there were Jockeys bright with sinuous frills,
Where blossomed a quickly growing tree
And here a Bond not ancient as the hills,
    Enfolding this glee-spot of Teenie-Weenerie

    ..And also to William S

When to the sensations of sweet sillaged thought
I summon up remembrance of frags past,
I sigh the lack of many a scent I sought
    And with old nose new sniff my awful bad taste;
But weep again Bonds long-since exhausted,

Then can I drown one called I, unused to flow
With precious juice held in closet dark and cool,
And moan th' expense of many a shopping night
Then can I grieve at the Bond long gone.
And heavily from head to toe spritz o'er
The glad amount of fore-bemoanèd New Haarlem,
Which I pay not as paid for before

So if the while I spritz on thee, Old Friend,
The loss is restored and Bond-borrowings end.

    When I'm under the gun
    It'll gimme a lift
And it's such a nice gift

    And I heard it cry
    Signoricci, Signoricci
    It's such a beautiful sky!

    Down By The Docks

    New Haarlem rocks!
I was down by the docks
    A fella drove by
    He was noticeably high
    It didn't matter to me
    Because so was I
    But not on some drugs
    No, those dudes were thugs
    I was rockin on scent
If they only knew what I meant

    New Haarlem

Of all the good things that one consumes,
    among all the worldly smells,
the coffee scent is the very best.
It disperses the whims of men and women,
it fortifies the body and quickens the mind.
One feels it from the head down to the heel.

    Halleluja.

When fall comes with wind and snow,
    when spring begins its rains,
then one becomes bleak and dull.
All one wants to do is to sleep and quibble.
Yes, one's whole body is out of sorts,
but then ... there is health in the smell of coffee!

    Halleluja.

When the husband has lost her beloved wife
and sits alone with the debts,
he bitterly mourns his twofold plight
but puts the coffee scent on him.
And when the coffee is clear he leaves the bier
and gets strength in a smell of coffee.

    Halleluja.

When the latest news be gathered in
    from the city's hundred sources,
    at a small nice party
one would see one's friends and intimates.
At the coffee cloud one does the very best
    gossiping about the neighbors.

    Halleluja.

One would smell sugar with the coffee,
another would love to smell the vanilla,
    meanwhile talking with such force
that the ears ought to be plugged.
Just as the drums roar at an army camp
the noses clamor at the conference.

    Halleluja.

Without the smell of coffee--oh, heavenly smell,
    what would human life be!
All the news not yet in print
stands written in the bottom of the bottle:
Because after the last spritz is gone
life's riddles are "solved" in the coffee grounds!

    Halleluja.

OK, so heres a hit at the Bonds No.9. I've never smelled it, but think I know someone who would love it!

    Bonds No.9 New Haarlem

Now if coffee is an eagle,
    And lavender a dove
Then the coffee speaks of passion
    And the lavender, of love
Whilst the coffee note may rise
    And shake its angry fist,
    The lavender shall soften
    and soothe this lovers tryst

With a base of precious amber
    And vanilla pod divine,
It would seem New Haarlem's contrasts
May suit a love of mine
    For she is also known
For her passion and her drama
    But for this Merry Christmas
She'll be my hot, sexy mama!

"Uh wow. This is so great. I don't know what to say, except I want to thank my producer Bill Shakespeare and all the people at the Norton Anthology of English Literature and my mom and dad and my lovely wife and daughter and of course Nina Ricci for inspiration. But most of all NearFantastica who is not just spreading the X-mas spirit but actually donning old St. Nicks boots and stuffing socks! Thanks also to the judge(s) and to everybody who contributed such marvellous poetry."

When do we publish "Odes to Perfume. Fragrance Lovers Sing their Praise" ? Bond No. 9 & Co. would surely sponsor...

Besides my daughter's happy giggles, this is the nicest Christmas present I'm getting

This thread restores my faith in human nature! At a time where co workers in my office building struggle to even make eye contact or to say hi especially at this time of year!

    Bravo NearFantastica

Congratulations Dimitri, your lucky beloved lady, and the other talented winners! The poems are wonderful; what a treat it was to read the entries! Bravo!

And thanks NearFantastica for your generosity -- It never ceases to amaze and gratify me how generous and kind fragrance enthusiasts are, with an unusually few number of exceptions; every internet forum seems to have "difficult personalities" but so far in my experience the last few months of my new scent enthusiasm this has been blessedly and almost startlingly rare. I've never encountered such a warm and welcoming corner of the internet hobby universe before and I thank you all.

Thumbs up Re: Merry Christmas Gift Giveaway!

Well deserved congratulations to Dimitri, Live Jazz, r2s, knightowl and the good life for your very creative efforts. Good reads, one and all!

And thanks Anthony for a really fun time, both in entering and getting to read all the wonderful and varied entries. Your generosity in conceiving, 'funding' and giving your time to make this site even better was so nice to see happen and to participate in. Thoughtful events like this help make Basenotes the standout e-site for fragrance afficianados. And many thanks to the assistant judges too> Bravo!

Anthony, a big public THANK YOU for the bottle of New Haarlem that arrived today

I couldnt resist sampling from it while the Mrs is on a business trip, and i must say i do find your previously posted insights quite accurate when you likened the syrupy gourmand notes to Rochas Man. Its an intriguing scent and Im certain the wife will enjoy it enormously. Its sitting on her dresser for when she gets home.

    Cheers again!
