It's a sad day in perfumery... and especially for all those Kouros fans.
    Top 5 for Fall:
    1) Straight to Heaven - By Kilian
    2) New York - Nicolai
    3) Terre d'Hermes
    4) Aventus - Creed

Thank you Bourdon for some good sniffing.

Lets have a look back at some of the fragrances he was responsible for:

    YSL Live Jazz
    YSL Kouros
    Davidoff Cool Water
    FM Iris Poudre
    FM French Lover
    Shiseido Feminite du Bois

I dont care much for French Lover, Kouros and Cool Water and haven't tried FdB. Live Jazz has got it going on. Hmmm... I would have expected a more glowing resume, maybe I am missing some fragrances here.

Isn't Bourdon the perfumer behind Acqua di Gio? I don't have the link but I recall an interview with Bourdon where they highlighted his most commercially successful fragrances and Di Gio was one of the them.

I could have sworn that Alberto Morillas and Jacques Cavallier did AdG.

It's still a mystery why he copied two Creeds though.
Kouros ( Orange Spice) and Cool Water ( Green Irish Tweed).
    Ah well, writers block maybe?

He made some of my favorites: Dolce Vita, the institut très bien colognes, etc.
    His nose will be missed.!

Better to say - It`s still a mystery who copied who!
As far as I know - nobody (neither Bourdon, nor Creed) has been in courts so far.

    I`ll miss him.
I`ll cherish my Kouros, French Lover, Live Jazz and Mark Birley bottles.

erm..both Creeds were released years before Bourdons creations?

Orange Spice 1950 and GIT 1985

But it doesn't matter really, they are both great perfumers, and maybe they don't care. Everyone copies in fragrance buisiness these days, even some well known houses.

I`m not thinking that Orange Spice and GIT were copied by Bourdon.
First of all, nobody will say - I`m copied somebody else great idea.
So it should be made by some special measurements before the court - and it should be made in court OR by someone`s initiative...
    Maybe Turin would make it?
(well, I would not discuss historical roots of Creed etc.)

Turin has said in his review of Cool Water that its a copy of GIT. In one of his articles he has also tackled this issue of "copying" fragrances and stated that many of the great classics were "inspired" by other fragrances. Eitherways GIT/Coolwater and Kouros/Orange Spice do share some DNA but aren't exactly the same fragrances (I can certainly note some differences)...perhaps Bourdon liked the Creeds and decided to use them as a base template.

and acqua di gio is a copy of mark birley sort of
    --------------------------------------
I have a feeling though that in this age of the rising star of perfumers maybe he'll be back like cher or babs streisand out of retirement with something really really really really expensive
    --------------------------------------
copying GIT was a kind of noble act on whosever part it was to cash in on and spread the joy thereof. I'm sure I'd wear GIT more often if there were no cool water though even though I never ever smell cool water on anyone ever ever ever ever.

For the Gianfranco Ferre and the YSL Kouros (worn by a once-beloved) and for Feminite du Bois (worn by me) thank you Pierre Bourdon, and a long and happy retirement to you.

Oh well, he did not retire yet!
My friend from company Faberlic which has a contracts with Bourdon, told me that rumours about Bourdon retirement were spreading for some years long... And still he is working.

She also told me that almost all companies visited their company with contract propositions about new perfumes...
    So - let`s wait

This is the man who has created two of my holy grails - Iris Poudre and Femininite du Bois.
Please let him keep working just a little longer - who knows what else he might come up with?

I like Bourdon either, especially: Iris Poudre, Feminite du bois, Dolce Vita, Kouros etc. Great nose, great creator.

It was intersting to read here about Kouros/Orange Spice and Cool Water/Green Irish Tweed.
These scents are really very similar, too similar.

Bourdon created both Creed's Green Irish Tweed (1985) and Davidoff's Cool Water (1988). Yes, the fragrances are similar, but Creed and Davidoff are unlikely to complain since they are both cash cows.

In Green Irish Tweed, Bourdon not only created the main accord of "Ambroxan (metallic amber)-dihydromyrcenol (grey citrus)-octin esters (green violet leaf) sweetened by apple up top and sandalwood below", but he basically made the whole fragrance. He later extended the accord on a larger scale in Cool Water, as well as amping up the zesty fougere characteristics.

If you want to know more about it, ask Michael Edwards, who knows more about the ins and outs of the perfume industry than anyone alive.

    A few of Bourdon's best:

    YSL Kouros
    YSL Kouros Fraicheur
    YSL Live Jazz
    Creed Green Irish Tweed
Christian Dior Dolce Vita (with Maurice Roger)
    Davidoff Cool Water
Shiseido Feminite du Bois (with Christopher Sheldrake)
    Frederic Malle French Lover/Bois d'Orage
    Frederic Malle Iris Poudre
Institut Tres Bien Cologne a la Francaise
    Yves Rocher Voile d'Ambre

There are other good ones not listed on the previous lists in this thread, but I can't remember all of them.

A great perfumer no doubt - surely he is one that many of the up and coming perfumers will draw influence and inspiration from.
