    Default SotD - Thursday December 20, 2007

    Morning all.

Didn't chime in yesterday so I just wanted to say hugs to DeeOlive and to Lievje - I hope your son continues to improve Happy belated birthday to markc!

I'm wearing Cinema Festival d'Ete today - nice summery scent which opposes the gloomy, rainy day (and we are supposed to be in a drought!)

    Have a great day everyone.

A few weeks back I read on another forum that Basenotes is a very uptight and hard-to- get-into-the-circle community and I disagreed then. Our yesterday's thread is another proof of this, doncha think?

First half an hour at work yesterday I spent on the phone answering all them questions about last minute shopping: Why don't you have THIS in stock? Tabarome Millesime for the first time in ages...adore this invigorating elixir. The notes list tobacco leaves, green tea and ginger but I get a strong impression of tonka and some lavender as well. Comes roaring out of the spritzer in a blast of bright citrusy freshnes and settles into a lightly cozy sort of patchouli and sandalwood. One Creed that really works for/on me.

(Was warmly embraced the SECOND I showed up here - hope the poor disgruntled person gives it another shot.)

Sorry, I did not mean to create a tempest, it was a line on POL where I do not post, but actually it was Q. who stood up for us.

Golden Aoud is nice! It is my third aoud that I have ever tested and I can't find the notes for this fragrance. I suspect that it comes from Nancy's (Fishbone) bottle -- to my knowledge there are only a few bottles of it available in private collections in the USA -- and here what I detect in it: aoud (not strong, but still resinous, medicinal), soft mellow spices (cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, something else I would use in cooking), light flowers that actually make it slightly cool (orange/lime/lemon blossom, orchid, hyacinth, almost broom-like note), no roses, light ambrette seed (soapy, salty, dusty) and sandalwood (vibrant, warm and fresh). The general character is light, dry and gentle, staying close to skin. I think that Lady_in_Black would like this, but it is way too light and demure.

He's never used the "old person," "old lady" or "grandma" descriptor ever! Not even with Miss Balmain. What was this old-person scent? YSL Paris Enchantees (THANK YOU, COMDIVA!). Since he loves roses, especially in Stella Rose Absolute, I wasn't expecting his .

I didn't care that much for the original Paris, but now I want to try all of the annual variations. Maybe he'll like Vergers or Romantique?

Re the board's welcoming approach (or otherwise) as noted elsewhere - I have been here for many months and still find it a little difficult to get along, but then I feel that way almost anywhere. I observe great kindnesses and generosity amongst the friends here and it gives me pleasure to see it, though I don't neccessarily feel a party to it. That may indeed say more about me than about most participants, but I can see how that might affect other people who are less expressive than others.

Part of it may be due to cultural differences or different ways of expressing one's personality. For example, I would rather chew my arm off than use smilies or animations, so unless I am a good writer (sadly I'm not) it might be easy for others to misunderstand any light-hearted comments. Some people are addressed by real names rather than user names, and it takes a while for that information to filter through to newcomers.

I suggest any lurkers simply wade in and start posting. I am not in the habit of entering a room or a forum with a fanfare saying 'look, I'm here'. I am certainly not cripplingly shy, but I don't gush either. I just come in and post my first comment or question without feeling obliged to introdice myself first. It is a public board, not a private one. Lurkers out there, just come in and browse and stay around if you feel like it, but please persevere with it.

Anyway, scent of the day is still Songes, though I have been out to town and tested Hananita and Twill Rose. I smell most preculiar.

I find Basenotes very welcoming and I am thrilled to be here. I am delighted with the level of civility and the concern board members show for each other. I have had a few great experiences with exchanges and have had people point out things on ebay that I would have completely missed (like my ebay score of Nan Green! Thanks Quarry).

I look forward to sharing more, and opening up some of my vintage beauties to BNers who may not be able to find them and who can't recall their heydays. Perfume is an art and should be more widely "viewed" is my new philosophy.

Today, I am retrying Yvette, but in the EDP form. So far, I am very happy with it, but it is my daughter's Michael Storer and I will have to consult with her before buying a bottle. The tarragon manages to not be foody and blends well with the florals. Gen is still my favorite of the sisters and I will be wearing Gen more and more in this EDP form

Sestra! Tell me how Habanita is working for you. Habanita is one of my holy grails and a scent that I find to be a split personality: ambery and powdery in the winter and in the summer it becomes a remarkable melange of fruits, florals and glorious woods. How is it faring in your summer?

Zibeline, it is my winter here in the UK, and very cold it is too. Habanita is powdery and ambery as you describe, and just slightly smoky. I've been wearing it now for about two and half hours and find it stays close to the skin. I am a little underwhelmed and disappointed, and at that price am relieved not to be falling in love. The black and silver bottle modelled on an old Lalique one has a puff ball spray, and it is a real beauty.

I will test again when I can do it more justice. Today was rushed and the sweetness of the Twill Rose on the other arm was fighting with it.

Gosh I feel dumb, yep winter, I got carried away with my memories of how much I love it in the summer! Here in the US I can find Habanita for very low prices, bought my 3.3 for 19.99 and can find one ounce bottles for under 10.00. The sprayer yo describe sounds like it might be the Habanita EDP and I am jealous! This version is only something I tried at Aedes and was very expensive indeed. When I think of the name Habanita, I think sultry weather, exotic flowers and tobacco blooms, and that is this scent in the summer, but not in the cold. If you can get a sample to take home, do try it after a warm shower and it will morph into something else and sill like crazy!

I tested Habanita in Harvey Nichols' perfume department. The 100ml bottle of edp costs £190, approximately $380 but I'm not sure what the exchange rate is at present.

I will do as you say and get my hands on a sample.

When your DH goes out of town for a day or two, I will happily share some of the FB that I ran out and purchased almost immediately after Twolf  sent me a sample of Roses Enchantees to try!

I'm much a-feared I'll like Storer's new fig fragrance when it comes out. The rule here is: Wear nothing with fig in it.

    Sestra and Zib-
    You don't have to lust.
I have the parfum, and I could send you a smidge.

The key to acceptance may be as simple as kindness-
It really doesn't cost $10 every time you smile or help out !
But it's true- I was awfully naive, and I didn't realize how easily things can be misinterpreted.

    I've been bit@hslapped a few times.
    Por nada !
    Not necessarily here...

Thanx for the site dear Zibs - (new to me) but I can't find where they offer samples. Am I being dumb?? Am toying with the notion of the solide!!

Chaya - at that price. even a sniff of the Habanita would set you back ten clams!! I'm WILD for the plain old EDT - can't imagine what the 'fume will do.

    Silly lady-
    Don't be shy.
    I have EDT and extrait.
If you'd like some- tell me.

    Oh-
the solide is very dry, and hard to wear...
I have it in M, AND IT'S JUST STICKY AND SMEARY.
    Wouldn't advise it !

I'm so glad this place is filled with better noses than mine!!!!

I remember this scent being closest in feel to White Aoud. I also remember being quite fond of it.

Looks like it will have to be my SotD - my memory of it is a bit fuzzy and the last time I wore it, it was hot out.

Thank you so much for the feedback Twolf!
