    Default Mandy Aftel's Fragrances

Has anyone tried these? What were your impressions?

I tried Parfum de Maroc and Blond Tabac the other day and liked them. Blond Tabac was too sweet at first, but dried down nicely. Parfum de Maroc I liked right away. It's hard to fully evaluate a fragrance in one wearing, though, and her samples are expensive. I'm interested in Tango, Boronia, Fir and Orchid, but the store I visited didn't have these in stock.

I highly recommend Essence & Alchemy to anyone who hasn't read it.

    Hi -

    Welcome to Basenotes!

I have not tried any of the fragrances, but the book is one of several fragrance-related ones that I received on Christmas.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

My favourite is Cepes and Tuberose. I fell in love this it at first sniff when it was sold in London. I had to buy some straight away.

The book is good, but I feel that she manages to re-hash a lot of the information from books that were published in the 19thC. I know that a lot of the illustrations were taken from Mr Thompson's perfume book, I know because I have that book in my collection.

I'm sure you're right, Prince Barry. Perhaps, it's a good survey of that literature for those without access to those books. Essence & Alchemy has inspired me to seek out those earlier publications. I'm sure that will keep me busy for a while.

I'll have to try the Cepes and Tuberose.

Purplebird, here is a link to her website. She uses natural essences, no synthetics:

Chayaruchama, she does seem wonderful. Maybe I'll take her class at Esalen. I could use an excuse to visit Big Sur.

    I'm most curious about Orchid.

Orchid is a solid, and gloriously spicy- from Shiso, of all things.
I forgot to add Shiso to my list- that's the favorite of the Luilei boutique owners in Brooklyn- the first'close' place to carry Andy Tauer's work.

How lucky you are, to go to Esalen !

Thanks for the info on Orchid. I think it would be a safe, unsniffed buy.
