Default Tobacco based fragrances...please recommend :)

I realised tonight that I've always had an unconscious attraction to tobacco based fragrances. My obsession(!) started with Herrera for men, I then met Havana along the way, and then was introduced to The Dreamer years thereafter.

Herrera I "observed" while working in a restaurant with this gentleman who always smelled so good. At the time CK Escape was the only fragrance I knew of. The smell of Herrera was so intriguing that I had to go and ask him and then get it for myself. Regardless to say I was hooked. A backup bottle is waiting in anticipation.

Havana came a few years later and what got my interest were both the box and bottle. The scent I found just...nice. Fast forward a few years later (i.e. Basenotes) and I had all but forgotten it ,and couldn't understand all the hype here. I couldn't understand why most reviewers found it so exceptional. To me it was a fragrance available everywhere, at a reasonable price and just not comparable to...anything.

The Dreamer I've been dreaming about after reading the reviews. Biffo_the_Bear (thanks again!!) introduced me to this gem. It smells good, it's Oriental IMO, it lasts and lasts, and you can smell it from a mile away - all of which are characteristics I appreciate. As above, a backup is waiting

Tonight the BF and I went out for dinner. He put on Havana on impulse, and I The Dreamer (after many minutes of deciding of course!) And to eventually get to the point - what I got from smelling both these after they started to dry down! Tobacco deluxe!

Havana has never been something I thought I would rave about, but what I smelled on him tonight was just gorgeous (no bias ) It's never been that good on my skin. The Dreamer - a backup will always be in stock. And lastly Herrera - the tobacco in this one is still to be outdone, IMO of course. It has been classy enough for me to choose it for 2 VERY special occasions.

Can anyone recommend a tobacco based fragrance with the same qualities as the ones I've mentioned - development, longevity, sillage?

    Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
    Michael Kors Men
Parfum d'Empire Fougere Bengale (on my skin, the tobacco note has incredible presence and sustain.)
Domenico Caraceni (tobacco, rose, and so much more. Exudes class.)

    Hi Jellybean ...
I got Bogart Pour Homme earlier in the week and its brilliant ,, sweet aromatic tobacco essence throughout .
I'll be adding Herrera to my want list based on your comments , I know i wont be dissapointed .
    ## about Michael Kors I got it a few days earlier than Bogie & after initially being floored by its svelte & sexy aroma I was dissaponted that its so terribly piss weak !! ... It was the instigator in a thread i started earlier in the week (( YOUR THREE GREATEST but WEAKEST )) I loved it so much but was dissapointed beyond beleif that makers made it like that ..
Its been about 22 hrs and as i type i get the occasional Bogie whif of tobacco float up from my inner elbow/arms as i type .
Looks like I'll be decanting Michael to spritz every hour or so ,, when i use him .

Acqua di Cuba, SMN is a power house of a tobacco frag. The tobacco is present through out all three stage's, of this one. Some leather thrown in for good measure on the dry down. Definately not for the office, but I do like this one on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Santa Maria Novella has another tobacco fragrance which is a touch lighter and sweeter that Acqua di Cuba, and that is Toscano, which is only available from the national distributor in NYC, Lafco, I believe. They have a website, it may not be on there as it is very new, but very, very nice.

There is one fragrance that comes to mind that I think you need to try:

    Lagerfeld JAKO

Never gets mentioned for some reason, but this stuff shares a lot of similar qualities with the Dreamer. I was shocked when I looked at the notes for JAKO-- I didn't see tobacco listed, but to my nose I do get tobacco-- though less than the Dreamer. But this stuff has the same "feel" as Dreamer-- both alternately masculine and feminine qualities, ethereal topnotes, and a spacious expanse of shifting middle notes. JAKO has an awesome plum note in the topnotes that is more of a fresh plum than a dried fruit type of note. A difficult scent to describe really-- if you even remotely like the Dreamer, you have to get your hands on JAKO-- you can usually find it for pretty cheap.

Again, it's not necessarily a tobacco thing with JAKO (because there may be no tobacco in it) , but it feels a lot like Dreamer and I actually prefer JAKO.

The fragrance I recommend is one that I recently bought blind for my wife. It is listed in the Directory as a female scent but a number of the reviews describe it (correctly, in my opinion) as definitely unisex.

It has been around since 1921 - Habanita by Molinard - and the best tobacco scent I have come across so far!

Here is the Directory link: http://www.basenotes.net/ID10212395.html

My vote goes to Tabarome Millesime by far. While not as full bodied, I liked it alot more than the vintage. The dreamer was good too, more like cigarettes than cigars but still good tobacco. Michael Kors is a great scent but not enough tobacco present to call tabacco based.

I recently bought a bottle of The Dreamer but I can't seem to get the longevity and sillage out of it that everyone talks about. In fact, it doesn't seem to last more than 2-3 hours on me. It's really frustrating because frags tend to react on me per the BN general consensus.....and I like this one a lot. I'm thinking it might be olfactory fatigue setting in particularly soon and strong for me on this one. But even if that's the case and others can still smell it on me, I doubt that I'll get another bottle when it's gone cause I like to smell it too damnit - that's 50% of why I wear it.

My favorite tobacco scent so-far (and I haven't smelled that many) is C&S Cuba. It's long-lasting and has very good sillage IMO. It has a mint top note that I'm not in love with but it strangely works with this scent. The C&S website describes it as "heady"; I do concur.

BTW, I don't really get that much tobacco from Havana.

If you mean a strong tobacco, like a cigar...

    Black Walnut - Banana Republic
Black Walnut smells shockingly similar to fresh high end cigars in a cedar box.

If you want a prominent velvety smooth Pipe Tobacco...
    Very Valentino
    Very smooth, very rich. Understated.

Michael Kors also has a very smooth less prominent pipe tobacco note, but the rotten fruit smells ruin it for me. Other than that, it's very good.

Terre D'Hermes smells like burning tobacco w/ Lots of Citrus & Earthy smells, if that interests you.

Cross the counter and try Caron's Tabac Blond. NOT only for women; in fact the edt has quite a tilt towards the masculine side.

Tabac Blond as already recommended is a masterpiece from the roaring 20's and it still competes well, and I believe is at the top of the heap. Fumerie Turque by Serge Lutens is quite good. Off the beaten track for some Italian Profumum Fumidus... magnifico!!

Domenico Caraceni 1913 has a nice leathery tobacco base note that is offset nicely by the rose and fruit opening. It's not really a tobacco scent, but the tobacco plays a strong role. Recommended highly!

Strange enough, I found that I don't like Dreamer as much anymore. At the same time Jako was among the first scents I ever bought for myself and I still like and use it. I agree with this description and highly recommend it.

I'm very impressed with Vintage Tabarome. Old World sophistication, but nothing musty about it. I like it better than Tabarome Millésime, nice as that is.

I agree that Caraceni is the best choice for a subtle tobacco note.
for something more full-bodied and pipe-tobacco like, Vento Canale by Campagna. Bogart pour homme is a cheap and easily available alternative. and yes, Aimez-moi is quite fantastic.

I personally don't like Tabac Original, but many swear by it. And I should mention, though I have not tried it (will buy sooner or later, though) Alt-Innsbruck cologne, which is made from 100% natural tobacco essence without synthetics (blended with menthol).

If you like Le-Maleish sweetness, try the Italian Panama 1924 by Boellis. Tobacco blossom, very very sweet indeed.

Velvet Rope by Apothia's very nice, sort of vanilla and cigarettes. Quite sweet and difficult to pull off but quite a complex and interesting scent. I can imagine you'd either love it or hate it though.

this is my first post here and thought this was an interresting topic,

although the reviews on this site are quite unfavorable i always thought Cigar Aficianado was an awesome scent if you love tobac. It reminds me of visiting some of the handmade cigar factories in tampa. I think its a very rich scent although im sure many of you that have smelled it may think it trash, all im saying is if you are looking for a tobacco type scent i think this could be for you, its discontinued but still readily available

May I recommend Herrera CHIC? Lots of tobacco in the drydown, but very woody and kind of an in-your-face scent, so be gentle with it. I put 2 sprays on my chest and neck yesterday and it lasted more than 12 hours! I got a whiff of it every 5 seconds.

I'm VERY curious to try this one. My only problem is that I read in the reviews that you had to be in your 40's to pull this one off. However, my favorite scent(s) to this point are Havana & Havana Reserva. I just pulled the trigger on Orange Spice (my first Creed). Would love to try this one, but thought it would be a little too "mature" for me to pull off. I'm wondering if the whole "40's" thing is a little overdone. Also, pulling the trigger on the 8.4oz is a pretty big investment. So my question to you is that is it really a mature mans scent or can someone a little younger pull this one off? For the record, I just turned 34...

Vintage Tabarome.. is one of the few scents I own (decant, of course), that I actually had two women stop me and ask me what it was.. it's been happening more lately because I have worn more of what I am wearing (more sprays). Vintage Tabarome and SMN Acqua di Cuba are my two favs in this category, but Tabarome blows SMN's away.. just my preference. Both are good, but the Creed Vintage Tabarome is austere, classy, and not smelled often.. not by me anyway. How can something so old smell so modern and be so applicable to many situations.. I love Vintage Tabarome, Private Collection. Tabarome Milliseme (the newer one) is not nearly as good to me.. I like it, but it smells like Tabac Blonde.

    Hey,

I'm a big fan of tobacco fragrances.
By far my favorite dedicated tobacco is Miller Harris - Fuilles de Tabac. It really highlights the almost floral tone of tobacco, and tobacco flower. Its not too heavy, sharp or medicinal as tobacco fragrances tend to be. My only issue is longevity, which is good, but not great. I got mine when Luckyscent had it on huge sale. Their prose is nice, "Complex Cuban cascarilla oil and pimento berries contrast with a cooling heart of pine needles and velvet sage. Tobacco, tonka bean and Malay patchouli complete this darkly intriguing, masculine fragrance." My wife wears it at times, and it smells really nice on her.

For many, Tabac Blond is just the pinnacle of tobacco fragrances, and many folks find that it is their holy grail of perfumes in general. Everyone should try it once if they can spring for a sample of the parfum version. There are few better experiences in the art of perfumery.

Also a shout out for Lutens Fumerie Turque. Smoky, floral, honey, amber....I'm not sure why I don't think of it as a tobacco fragrance. There is just so much going on there. In my top 5 for winter. I wont go on about it as there has been tons written about it already.

And Michael Kors is just excellent, especially for the price.
