Default Ever peeped at people using 'tester' in the store?

I have so far seen 2 strange guys.

1st story - In Tesco, there is a counter selling fragrances by Valenti and Lomani. And that Saturday night, a Thai guy, who seemed to work in a factory, secretly sprayed Lomani pour homme on his blue t-shirt about 10 times, and, at the 'same spot'. He kept spraying, while looking around as though wanting to know who was seeing him doing that! Thank God he didn't see me, otherwise he would have dropped the bottle and run away. When he was done, he quickly made a move, leaving a very strong trail of Lomani in the air. Yes, very synthetic.

2nd story - At the warehouse sale, I was testing Baldessarini Ambre, a guy in his late 30s, tall and looked like he had never worn cologne up to this stage of life, quickly approached Boss Selection, grasped it and gave himself 4 full sprays on his white shirt and hurriedly walked out the room. The SA stood in awe since she was about to ask if he likes it, but then he put it down and walked away at top speed.

    What about your story?

I was at Macys in NY when I was in the states, at the fragrance counter a well dressed 50ish guy picked up a bottle of Caron pour Homme, opned his shirt, moved his tie out of the way and sprayed his chest 5 or 6 times. He then buttoned his shirt and 'sauntered away'. The young brunette SA just stood there with her mouth hanging open with her eyes wide. I burst out laughing, I couldn't help myself :-)

I saw this guy at Sephora literally taking a bath with "Clean Men", then he left.. The SA walked over to where he was and started gagging...LOL.

This tends to happen on weekends here where teenage boys will walk into a store and spray themselves 3-4 times on the shirt and walk straight off. They cannot afford to buy the stuff so just use the tester every week. Usually it is Le Male or Aqua Di Gio.

    Ah, I get it.

At home he will twist his T-Shirt above a funnel to collect the stuff in a bottle. Smart.... very smart.

People were staring at me, when I was sampling around 15 different kind of fragances on paper strips and writing down the name of the fragrances. I mean c'mon, how can I remember back home which was which, with so many different pieces of paper?

Ahh...scent over application. The first sign of a non-Basenotes person.

But let's face it - most people are clueless about fragrances, where to apply them, etc...And the 'running away' from the counter after applying it is totally understandable - sometimes the SA's at certain dept. stores can be downright pushy and obnoxious.

I was low on money once, and addicted to Terre d'Hermes before I purchased it. On two separate occasions, I, em... took a closer look at the fragrance, by spraying it to my neck and both wrists. I knew I was going to buy it so, I felt better about the situation. Since sales associates can be stingy with samples, I have been known to go to the store with nothing on specifically to give a fragrance a full day's wearing before purchasing. So I guess I'm that guy... hahaha

yeah i love seeing those teens. first they smell the top to see if its good. then they spray all over and walk away loudly with their gang of friends. (i'm a teen....)

this is an aside to the topic but: i also love hear old cheap men beg for samples...without even talking to the SA about anything...or buy anything

I work at this little grocery/convenience/school-apparel store located pretty much right across the street from campus at Penn State. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, frat boys come down and spray themselves with our Axe/Tag/Whaever bodysprays. I've given up trying to yell at them, because it happens so much, not to mention it's quite funny to see just how much these guys put on! Very few actually put it on their skin, most just hold it and do the crazy flailing-arm thing trying to cover as much of their bodies as possible. You haven't smelled horrid until you've smelled the scent of all the body sprays mixed together in the air.

Another time I was at Macy's visiting my then-girlfriend, where I witnessed a guy try to spray some cologne on, but apparently the nozzle was pointed the wrong way and he ended up spraying his girlfriend right in the face! I feel bad because she was obviously in pain from getting it in her eyes, but I couldn't help but crack up at the sight.

I'll admit I occasionally go use testers at the store, but only after talking to the SA and telling them I'd like to try it on my skin first. Usually, if they have a sample of it, they'd give it to me at that point, or just give me the go-ahead to spray myself... win-win, if you ask me!

The smell of bodysprays mixed together is horrid and just revolting.

My story has to do with my mother. If I ever go to any place with her, she'll look around to check if there are any SA's around, and then pick up the tester and give herself a few sprays. I look at her and think, yep that's my family.

Kinda on topic, once at a mall I had a little to much drink, stumbled into a discount scent house and asked the SA what's new? He said what have you got now? I said everything!! I couldn't smell mustard gas at 2 feet. He sold me a bottle of Thallium and Armani Code. I stumbled out of the mall, hailed a cab and went to the nearest bar to test the sillage LOL, I lifted my shirt and sprayed maybe 20 - 30 shots and entered the establishment smelling like Zippo Lighter Fluid and was escorted out... I don't do that anymore...

I'm going to revive a 2 1/2 month old topic here. I found it while looking up something here. One time while I was testing out some stuff on my arms at Macy's. I just spray on my wrist or something. Then walk around for a bit to look at some clothes or walk around the mall, then come back. If I like it, I whip out my phone to enter a text memo for myself. I wished I had one of those keyboard phones so I could describe what it is and rate it. LOL.

Anywhoo, while I was looking at a bottle of Guess Man, some dude about my age (mid to late 20's?) in the typical "bro" attire, polo shirt, cargo shorts, flip flops, short spiked hair was looking at Burberry London. Then he sprayed himself on the neck a couple times, then did this method where he sprayed his hands and applied it to his cheeks and part of his neck like aftershave. I went home and I did that myself a few times just to see if it does anything. LOL.

I only use these stores to refresh whatever I'm wearing. Haha. One time I went to get an extra spray of Bulgari Aqua because I only gave myself a few and it was wearing off when I got off the train. I did one spray while I was waiting for my samples at Sephora, then I walked over to the Westfield Mall where I was meeting some friends for dinner. I had to go up 4 escalators and cross a Nordstrom's to get to the restaurant. I made a quick pit stop and I sniffed Anitdote on a piece of paper then circled around for a bit looking for the Bulgari section and gave myself another spray. Hahaha. I also did this with Terre D'Hermes on another occassion because I was on my last few sprays of it in the sample I got before and it was sorta wearing out after a few hours.

Antidote's pretty nice. I'd like to try it on my skin when I stop by a Nordstroms or something. Now if I can get a sample of it, I'm good to go.

Once I saw a man in his late thirties or early forties I'd guess. He was browsing around a store where they most of their scents "in public" with testers and paper strips of course. He walks up to a fragrance (don't remeber which). He gives it like 5-6 sprays to the back of his hand and then smells it. A few minutes later I see the same guy, approaching another fragrance (Chanel PM IIRC), sprays it 5-6 times TO THE SAME SPOT on the back of his hand and smells it. I just stood there staring as I couldn't believe my eyes...

haha, rawk I do the same thing as you. I love going into the store and getting a nice spray of what I'm wearing after being out for a bit. The only store we have around here has a pretty small section and they have definitely noticed me doing it.

When I go sniffing in the department stores, I always take a fountain pen and some small sample-sized ziplock baggies. I write the name of the fragrance on the test strips and slip them into individual baggies before I leave. This keeps it from fading while on the ride home.

Do I get stares? You betcha. Do I care? Not so much...

That's cool! I have thought of that once, but never have tried. Maybe when I go to the Duty Free next time.

I saw an elderly lady that looked quite disshevelled spraying about 4 sprays of the No.5 EDP all over her clothes! She then rubbed her wrists against the spots where she had sprayed, picked up her shopping bags and walked off! I was practically in tears, and the Chanel SA at the counter was just gobsmacked!
