Default I need fragrance ideas..going shopping soon :)

I will post some things I have tried and what I thought about them, and maybe someone can give me a few ideas of what to smell or look for to try when I head out to sephora and the other dept. stores...I would love some advice! Thanks

Okay, 32 y/o female w/great sense of humour..but shy unless you know me. Eclectic interests.

Okay here are some things I have tried and what I thought:

The Chanels: Have never found one I liked! They smell horrid on me.

    Beautiful: Old lady

Happy: used to really like that one. Somehow it seems to not be complex enough for me anymore.

Obsession: used to love that smell. Actually I still think it smells good but it reminds me too much of high school...and seems dated.

Angel: at first hit smelled good. Then I turn into hot burned rubber w/bubble gum stuck on to me.

So Pink by Gap: smells exactly like a grapefruit at first (too much so) but then smells great on me after about 30 minutes.

Cool Water: once again used to love this. One of the few I have finished off. But not it seems too sweet after I've had it on for awhile.

Shalimar: Can't figure this out. Sometimes it smells so good to me and other times too sweet or too old ladyish. Very strange..still don't know what to think of it.

Daisy by Marc Jacobs: seems to smell so good...but like so many other frags, I wonder if once I buy it I will grow to hate it?

STella : I always gravitated to this in the store but never bought it yet. It seemed to smell really good to me. Once again I wonder if it would still smell good to me after a week of wearing it. (I tend to have a problem with that..not sure why?)

Anais Anais: used to REALLY like this one ..until yellow jackets started actually HUNTING me down and attacking. While I ran madly away from them. Now I am afraid to get it and start using it again. It was good for me to wear on an every day basis when I didn't want to offend anyone.

Pink Sugar by Aqualina: I stinking LOVE this..it smells like the fair when I first put it on, and despite being sweet it isn't nauseating sweet/headache sweet on me. And w/in an hour it turns into something totally different on me. From little girl to sexy yet clean ...but I am afraid its not right for everyday..at work for example.

YSL Paris: never bought it but it seems to smell good. I worry about the sweetness.

Euphoria for Men: I really liked the way it smelled in the store..but not the women's version. This happens a lot for me. The mens frag seems to smell better to me than the womans, unless it turns into a sickeningly sweet tone at the end.

Eternity: wow this smells good on me. I feel once again like it is immediately identifiable and dates me though!!!

Insolence by Guerlain: smelled good the one time at the store I smelled it but once again I am concerned about the sweetness.

Aromatics Elixir/Clinique: OMG it smelled like chemicals on me. Horrible. Smells perfect on my good friend. sooo strange.

OH I used to buy a lot of bath and body works stuff. Gardenia is really great...I like that one. I recently tried Midnight Pomegranate body lotion and it turns into major old lady dusty powder after an hour or two. The Japanese cherry blossom ...I don't know what to think. I can't love it and I can't hate it. But it annoys me because its a big seller. Must be psychological on my part.

Pure Grace (I think its called) by philosophy: smells really good like clean laundry. But who wants to smell like nothing more than clean laundry? I need something a little MORE complex.

Poison: smelled it once. Way too sickeningly sweet to me. I was afraid to put it on.

Okay I can't think of any other perfumes. But some smells I love are: the ocean, the forest, the smell right before the rain, and a perfect fall day. Also clean laundry.
    --------------------------------------
Oh yeah I forgot to say that I really like Gucci Envy! Afraid the smell won't last on me very long.
    --------------------------------------
Oh yeah I just remembered I have a full bottle of Amour de Cocoa by Compt du Sud (sp?) that I am sending off to my mom because it is the most discusting thing I have ever smelled. I had thought that since I loved Pink Sugar I might like this one. But absolutely not. It smells like a can of sweetened condensed milk that has gone sour on me. Ughgh if only I could find "THE ONE" fragrance...

    Pucci Vivara
    Shalimar Light
    Annick Goutal Gardenia Passion
    Annick Goutal Eau de Ciel
    Vera Wang Truly Pink
    B&BW Dancing Waters
    Stella
    Gucci Envy

You like those last two, but say you're "afraid." They don't have to be your only two scents, but might be nice for this day or that.

It seems you have an aversion to sweet scents, so I'd recommend a few drier, cleaner, or greener alternatives:

    Christian Dior's Diorissimo
    Balmain's Vent Vert
    Annick Goutal's Eau de Sud
    Hermes Hiris

SAS I think you should just do like the rest of us and just test everything you can get your hands on. The joy and thrill of the hunt is what we love. It's not easy finding a frag that you like and that likes you, but this is what drives our passion for perfume. There are a few here that may have found their signature scent, but I dare say that most of us have a collection of various frags that we love and are always looking for more. It's not unusual to fall out of love with a frag after wearing it for a while. I can't believe that you throw them away...*faints*. The wonderful thing about falling out of love is falling back in love with that fragrance months or even years later. I buy frags that I love and then grow tired of them rather quickly, but I always come back to them eventually and fall in love all over again.

You shouldn't limit yourself by trying to find that signature scent, that 'ONE'. Most of us would love to have just one and not try and figure out what frag to wear each day, but having options is a lot more fun for me. I love all kinds of perfume and I'm finding new things to fall in love with like incense scents. Liking one gourmand doesn't mean you will like most gourmands. The same goes for orientals or all frags that have a rose note. That's why you just have to try and try again. It's normal to fall out of love after while. Please don't throw your frags away....*faints yet again*, but give yourself a chance to rekindle that flame, that love you once had for a perfume once removed.

Let me tell you something. If you like it and the way it smells on you, then wear it! I don't care if it was made a 100 years ago or if it was made for men. Honey, if it smells good on me, I'm gonna wear it whether it smells like Grandma or Uncle Charlie. I wear perfume for my enjoyment. I love to smell perfume. I just love catching a whiff of myself every now and then. I even stick my nose in my shirt from time to time and take a deep breath. So don't focus on whats current or what house it came form, or whether it is niche or something exclusive that you can only purchase on and isolated island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Focus on what 'YOU' like and what smells good on 'YOU'! Judging from how easily you fall out of love with a frag, I doubt you will ever find a signature scent. So spray it up and stop throwing away your frags....*faints again*. Variety is the spice of a well fragranced life.

My suggestion on what frags to try......

OMG thanks so much you guyz!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am SOOOO excited to try some new stuff that I have never smelled before!!!! And it feels good to not feel ridiculous about the love I have for perfume
! I was trying to condone my behavior last night and telling myself that if I have one addiction, this would be the addiction to have. Much better than to drugs, alchohol, porn, spending, gambling, or who knows ...so what big deal right? I like perfume. LOL! Thank you so much for the suggestions I am so excited to have some ideas of new things to look for and smell now!

    If you're going to Sephora:

    Eau des Merveilles by Hermes
Valentino V (white bottle, not the red bottle)
Any or all of the Bvlgaris and Cartiers

Make sure they make you samples of what you like - you should never take a paper strip too seriously.

I would recommend Prada's Infusion d'Iris and Guerlain's Mitsouko EdP. And I also completely agree with divalogist's advice to try and sample as much as you can. Take home samples if you can and above all, trust your nose. Give your fragrances some time to dry down, so you get the full flavor and then go with whatever you enjoy best.

Best of luck and let us know how it went.

Having slept on it, a few other ideas for you:

    Rochas Byzance
    Gucci Envy
Estee Lauder Pleasures and Private Collection
    Bvlgari Jaipur Saphir

None too sweet, and none too likely to evoke grandma.

thanks everyone! I am writing all of it down and taking it with me and my friends are going to have to suffer with me !!!! hahaha! They know I am all about it though ..soo too bad I guess, right? I did try the Orange de'Merveulles (I know I didn't spell it right sorry in a hurry right now) once but I didn't try it on. Just from the bottle it smelled nothing like what I thought it would be....I read in some of the posts that it calms down and turns warm though upon wearing. Which is interesting. Some of the others I am thinking of trying that I remember smelling once before and liking are:

    Insolence by Guerlain,
    Donna Karen Cashmir Mist
    Dior "miss Dior cherrie"
    ..
I haven't smelled champs elysees or Jicky or Mitsouko...I read the reviews it seems people either love them or hate them? I do have shalimar and fell in love w/it immediately. But seems mature and sophisticated..sometimes you want something that is just plain sexy, or something just plain wacky which is what Pink Sugar tends to be for me...I have yet to find the smell that smells sexy on me. Hmmm. LOL! Body by Victoria seems nice for everyday just for running out the door in. Okay well I guess I should shut up and make sure I don't forget this list w/me. Take care everyone!!! Oh has anyone smelled Inis before? I like that but now it seems to have a horrible dry down on me. But I like the opening smell of it and have gotten lots of compliments of it.

something w/out the same drydown might be nice too. yeah you can see I am kind of addicted. I won't throw stuff away anymore. If its that bad I'll send it to someone on here that might want it. So if anyone wants my little bottle of angel they can have it! I don't know what to do w/it! Anyone love the Amour de Cocoa? I can send that off too.

    take care,
    me
    --------------------------------------
oh that is funny I did try the pleasures line..and I never cared much for the first original one. It smelled just like perfume to me. That probably doesn't make sense. But there is one of the pleasures lines that came out that smelled really good to me, and it was a very floral one to me. I can't remember what it was called I will try to spot it on here because then I will remember it. The only reason I didn't buy it is because to me, it smelled exactly like a flower, and nothing more, nothing less.... was just a tad bit too simple for me. but it DID smell good.

You can swap fragrances, too. Have fun shopping! (Inis has a lavender note, I think, so you might like something with that in it... maybe Eau de Recolte Bleue by L'Occitane?)

Oh I love lavender..real lavender atleast! I don't know enough about perfume to know which way lavender sits in a perfume or how it smells best, but I have lavender and mint plants outside and lavender has always been my fave herbal thing, along w/rosemary which I also have planted. Cool I will try that . PS I never thought I would be a rose perfume type of person, and was shocked when I found out Stella was associated w/roses...since I liked stella so much. Take care..I will go to Sephora on or around Jan 3rd, and post back then about the stuff I smelled and what I thought..and look for more feedback if you guyz have the time and inclination.

See if they have L'Occitane Green Tea with Mint there, too. You might like to sniff that, if you like unisex scents. And Archipelago Botanicals makes a candle I think you'd love with French lavender and thyme, called "Provence." Mmmm....

    Hi, and welcome

I agree with Divatologist that perhaps you should not look for one fragrance that defines you - but find a variety of fragrances that meet your criteria and changing moods.
And with Viberts assessment that you seem to not like scents that are overly sweet.

I'd suggest you try Un Jardin en Méditerranée, by Hermes
(Fragrance notes: Fig Woods and Leaves, Orange Blossom, Bergamot, White Oleander)
and also Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil - which is fresh and invigorating.

Try searching the directory here for the fragrances labelled unisex - you may be pleasantly surprised by many of them. Another would be Acqua Classica Borsari.

I was going to suggest Apres L'ondee, (After the rain) Guerlain, since you mentioned that ozone feeling right before and after rainstorms but it would probably fall into the category that you have termed "old lady" (a descriptor I don't care for since I am 60 - prefer mature or classic as terms to describe such scents ). Perhaps you might like Guerlain's Terracotta Voile d'Ete which has earthy hints, and is not overly sweet.

Order a sample pack - there are quite a few threads here with information about reliable online vendors. And have fun exploring!

I've had a mini bottle of Inis for a few years now and always go back to it when I need something fresh, it's lovely. I have a 50ml bottle on it's way to me that should arrive this week so I can't wait to smell it fresh from a new bottle. There are supposed to be a few things that smell very similar to it that may have a nicer drydown on you.. I know that one is L'eau D'Issey, but I think that Inis is nicer. Another is Truefitt & Hill 1805 but I haven't tried that one. There are probably others too so if you want something along the same lines that works with your chemistry you shouldn't have too much trouble.

As for your fragrances that you don't wish to keep, if you really don't mind just giving them away there are a couple of new threads in the female fragrance section where members are starting games with samples as prizes. That could be a fun way to pass them on and get ot know other basenoters, and whoever wins might let you sample something of their own. There is also the possibility of swaps on here or somewhere like make up alley.

Finally, I'm not sure how much help this will be, but if you'd something that smells like the air before a rainstorm, perhaps try Demeter Rain or Thunderstorm or perhaps Snow? I haven't tried them because shipping is $40 to England which is enough to buy a whole new fragrance, but reviews seem to say that although their lasting power isn't great, they are very realistic. They might be good for layering with other things and the 15ml minis seem pretty cheap if you don't have to pay extortionate shipping costs.

I hope some of this helps!

Thanks everyone, and I apologize for the "old lady" descriptor. I should have known better, especially after reading a thread regarding that topic. I must have been wearing pink sugar when I wrote that. It is the only excuse I have ...LOL. Wow wow wow soo many fragrances to try! This should keep me busy for a year! :-) whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of the Province candle, it reminded me of the Sage and Citrus Candle from Yankee candles. OMG that smells good! If you like that sort of thing.

A second vote for Hermes - Eau des Merveilles. It's sparkly and reminds me of a completely empty beach. Almost sterile, in a way, but very clean and nice.

Montale - Soleil di Capri. Warm citrus skin scent. Fresh and citrusy, but with a nice, close, warm base that takes the "edge" off the citrus.

Monyette Paris. Since you like gardenia . . .

I wonder if you may like the Nanadebary scents...try the Green and the Bronze, not too sweet, more light and spicy

Chanel no 19 if you have not yet tried it.

Le Baiser du Dragon by Cartier...spicy oriental not too sweet

you might try some of the Annick Goutal's
    Petite Cherie, pear notes
Eau de Camille honeysuckle and grass
    Songes, voluptuous ylang ylang

    just a few thoughts
"Like a lobster with a pearl in its claw, the beet held the jasmine firmly without crushing or obscuring it. Beet lifted jasmine, the way a bullnecked partner lifts a ballerina, and the pair came on stage on citron's fluty cue. As if jasmine were a collection of beautiful paintings, beet hung it in the galleries of the nose, insured it against fire or theft, threw a party to celebrate it. Citron mailed the invitations." Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins p. 189

What I am loving right now: Shalimar vintage extrait, Chanel Bois des Iles, Chanel no. 22, Le Labo Iris 39, Guerlain Iris Ganache

Hi everyone...I haven't gone shopping yet but that is on the 3rd I believe. I did however go to luckyscents and order samples of your suggestions!!! Atleast the ones I could find on there! Okay is this weird but I I also think taboo and emeraude smell good even though I know they are CHEAP. But not for everyday. However I still think they smell good. I guess I just like too much. I ordered a few that were not on the list too...since I coudln't find everything everyone suggested to be available as a sample. But I will look to smell more when I go shopping! Take care

^^ I don't think that's weird at all -- I rather enjoy Tabu every so often. I wear it when I'm in a particular mood, and because I love (love love love) when people complement me on my $14 perfume.

Enjoy your sniffing and shopping. And don't worry about the cost of frags you like - if they smell great to you and on you - thats what counts. I still adore, and wear Ciara - and that's a drugstore scent.

I remember that perfume. I had it once and loved it also. Then it turned on me. But my aunt named her daughter "Ciara".

I went and put Guerlains Insolence on today at the store. After drydown, I smell like "Mr. Bubble" the classic. Just so you know.

Oh yeah I TOTALLY forgot I really liked Michael Kors.........the regular one that smells like gardenia. That and Stella hmm. Maybe I should just add them Since I've had them on my mind for over a year.

I also used to love Jean Nate ........!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Loving perfume on the Internet since 2000
