    Default Great Masculine Florals?

    Hi folks,
this is my first post here, but I must admit to lurking quite a bit. Actually to the point that my tastes in scents has swayed a bit, perhaps on account of this site, who knows. Anyhow, I was sampling a bunch of the parfums de nicolai line, very sad that I couldn't get a sample of its "pour homme" offering, and I think it was the rose element in the patchouli intense that got me thinking about the whole "masculine floral" idea and what great ones were around. Pour homme was supposedly one of these, and probably my favorite scent of the moment, caron's 3rd man, I would definitely classify as one of these, but I was wondering what basenoters could tell me of similar scents.

I'm thinking maybe this would be scents at least "marketed" to men that contain strong floral scents outside of things like lavender that are very common in the masculine scents. Also, are there any of these that might have a somewhat modern take on the idea? 3rd man definitely gives me a more classical perfumery vibe, although I could be wrong on that. Anyhow... suggestions?

+1 to what my friend, Dimitrios offers (great choices), and I highly admire your taste in Caron's The Third Man (Le Troisieme Homme)!

Plus, take a look at these:

    Givenchy Insense
Vintage Azzaro Acteur (a deep brooding rose)
    Iquitos by Alain Delon

    3 wonderful masculine florals...and I know a lot more.

    Good luck - cheers,

    Welcome!

True florals is a nearly nonexistent category in masculine perfumery (the ones you mention have a touch of flowers, but are predominantly something else). Of course one can look into feminine territory. But if you want to limit yourself to stuff marketed to men:

In mainstream, I'd say that the main example, now likely discontinued, is Givenchy Insense, green floral, but with a dry, butch vibe. Not sure if discontinued or not, but there was also Rochas Globe (tobacco floral). And finally, the current Kenzo Flower (melony floral, marketed to women) is actually a modernization of an older scent marketed to men, Royal Bain de Caron, so that probably counts too.

More examples in niche. Off the top of my head, a no-holds-barred, enormous floral is Amouage Gold Man (which many people don't like because of the hefty dose of civet). Amouage has other scents for men that are heavy on flowers, especially rose, like Silver and Lyric. For rose, there is also Kurkdjian Lumiere noire pour homme and Malle Portrait of a lady (unisex but apprently a bigger hit with men), as well as the masculine offerings of Parfums de Rosine (Rose d'homme, Rosissimo, Rose Twill).

Cacio had some great suggestions that I'd agree with, but I'll chime in with the others and also suggest Black Aoud (and there are several other florals you might find quite masculine from the Montale line as well).

Check out Noir Patchouli by Histoires de Parfums, as well. If you're daring you can also look into 1969 by HdP, not that it's challenging, but it's not marketed to men. Yet, even though it's marketed to women, it works just fine on a man. My dad really likes this one, and there's nothing about it that would be perceived by most as overtly feminine IMHO.

    Give em' both a try.

I also suggest you check out Reflection Man by Amouage. While it's not an amazing scent, it does have excellent use of jasmine and neroli (white florals).

Why limit yourself to florals marketed to men? There are plenty of good "masculine feminines" out there.

I am thrilled to death with my recent purchase of Lanvin's Arpege (current formulation).

How do you define "modern?" Can you give an example of what you have in mind? I assume you don't just mean "recent."
Many others have given great recommendations. I concur especially with Anucci for Men and Iquitos, but I'd not call them modern, per se.

Hmmm... I'll try. I suppose that when I think of 3rd man for example, it seems to progress in a sort of classical way? classical perfumery if that makes sense? As in, I get citrus in the front, the florals in the middle and a sort of vanilla based drydown. On the other hand, I have say Dior Homme, which has a strong iris in the front which lasts in some way to almost the drydown but it is framed by a sort of chocolate and leather thing that to me seems like a modern idea... maybe its not, I'm not the most educated on the topic. I guess I was just asking if there was some really fresh new take on the idea.

As to why I am asking about "masculine" florals: I understand the idea that scents are not "gendered" as such. And I believe to talk more about the topic would take a long time, I also do believe that, when it comes to art, working within certain parameters can unlock creativity where it wasn't required before and thus create more interesting end projects. So even if it is just an matter of marketing, I find it interesting to see what perfumers come up with when faced with the problem of "selling flowers to men" so to speak. Does that make sense?

I'm going through the recommendations, there are so many! Some (egoiste) I've been looking to sample, others (Bulgari pour Homme) I've actually owned for a while but only after taking a liking to 3rd man did I really notice the florals (previously I enjoyed the scent for its sort of polite quiet fizzy grey tea/aldehydic quality). Thanks for the replies!
