Default Tell me more about Equipage by Hermes

Hi Basenoters, please share your view upon this scent. Since it came out in 1970 does it smell modern enough to wear nowadays? I'm about to buy it blindly as the reviews I have read are all positive. It also sounds like a unisex scent.

One of the best chypre parfumes on the market. Classic and classy. Another perfume for eternity....

It has a very strong carnation note, and is a bit smoky.
    It's a love/hate thing I think.
Very formal scent, IMO. Nothing casual in this scent.

I think of this scent as being well dressed in your best suit and tie. To me it is a formal, elegant scent. Floral, but with vetiver.

To answer your question, yes it does smell modern in relation to what's out there today. But I might also add that it also smells very classic. I think you have to like "serious" fragrances like Creed Epices and Bois de Portugal in order to connect with Equipage. It's a spicy floral that's very present. Sometimes it gives me a headache, but I always feel classy when I wear it.

Thanks for all comments. Well, if I like Caron un pour homme and The Third Man, would this scent be okay for me? I've never tried those 2 Creed scents. However, I like formal scents a lot apart from fresh ones. I also have and like Guerlain Vetiver (1990s).

Yeah, I just bought it blindly anyway. Did I really wait for your precious comments? No, I didn't LOL.

    Hi, Kiat.

Taking a quick glance at your wardrobe, I'll say that Equipage has some overall similarities with Burberry Brit. But I think Equipage is more complex, more floral, lighter, more refined and sophisticated than Brit. I like Brit and own it, but Equipage is in a different league.

I do like the description in a previous reply that mentions carnation and smoke, because I detect those scents, too.

Equipage is one of my favorites. Yes, it is old, but it isn't a heavy, typical '80s kind of old. I think it compares very favorably with contemporary fragrances. It's more opaque as scents used to be, but it's relatively delicate and so well put together. I'll be very surprised if you don't like it a lot!

Equipage is a wonderful, timeless scent that is spicy, floral, woody but discreet, classic and classy. I think that this fits in well with the Carons and other that you like.

Great comments from noggs and Oviatt! Can't wait for the box to arrive.

Yesterday 3 scents arrived, this morning one, tomorrow or Thursday 4, and next week 4, including Equipage. Wow, 12 scents this month, what a start for 2008!!! LOL.

I just love it. To me it's Bel-Ami's Cousin. They smell so much alike. I hope you like it. I know I do. Fragrancenet.com says this cologne is subtle. They're nuts.

Is the moss note very strong in Equipage? As strong as in Trussardi Uomo (for example)?

It's a little different. Trussardi's more like Van Cleef & Arples. Equipage is Stronger. I love it.
