    Default Top 10 Niche Brands

I have been perusing this board over the past three weeks and must say that it's easily the most informative, helpful board of it's kind on the web.

I have a background in fine fragrance retailing (we own a store in the Miami area) and am in the process starting up a website dedicated EXCLUSIVELY to niche fragrances, along the line of BeautyHabit or LuckyScent.

Starting out a business of this kind, I don't want to have (at least at the very start), AS much variety as the two sites mentioned above, as there are only so many investment dollars to go around. I would like to get a general consensus from everyone, as to the best selling niche brands out there.

There are some clear cut ones like Serge Lutens and L'Artisan, however, rounding out a lineup of ten niche brands (to start) isn't as easy as I thought it would be, so, I thought it best to turn to the experts. I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

    Thank you ALL in advance.

Any distributor contact information would also be greatly appreciated. There are some (Serge Lutens, L'Artisan, etc), which I already have, however, others are MUCH more difficult to obtain.

Apart from Serge Lutens and L'artisan, which are my top two choices, I would reccomend Montale, most commonly known for their Aouds and I would also reccomend Comme des Garcons And maybe the more popular Creeds ?

Does anyone have contact information for the US distributor for Montale, Domenico Caraceni, Comme Des Garcons, Fredric Malle (I was able to get the phone number to their publicist, but not to their distributor in the US),?

Does Caron count as niche? If so, definitely top 10 if not no.1.

I agree on the others. Also Ava Luxe - amazing fragrances only available via mail order. She has been taxing a break but will be returning soon. http://www.ava-luxe.com/

I'd throw in Demeter for fun-kitsch-niche. Tres affordable.

Your nostrils, which will dilate immesurably in unspeakable contentment, in motionless ecstasy, will ask nothing better for space, for they will be full of fragrance, as if perfumes and incense; for they will be glutted with complete happiness, like angels who dwell in the peace and magnificence of pleasent heaven.

Thanks to everyone who has thus far helped me out with this. Does anyone by any chance have US distributor contact information for any of these four brands? The rest I've found/contacted already.

    1-Montale
    2-Domenico Caraceni
    3-Comme Des Garcons
    4-Fredric Malle
    --------------------------------------
I found the distributor to Montale Parfums here in the states. And, Caraceni does not yet have distributorship set up for the US.

You definitely need Malle - his stuff is genius but also accessible.
    What about Parfumerie Generale?
And I'll second Caron - I don't know how widespread their distribution is in the US.

Have a look at the website for Les Senteurs, the famous London perfume shop. You might get some ideas - and they might well have contact info for the brands. http://www.lessenteurs.com
    Good luck with the venture!

    Later:
Having thought about this one, I definitely agree with the suggestion that you should offer some US niche perfumers. I'd certainly include AvaLuxe in that list. You have some very talented perfumers across the pond and they need help to get known by the wider perfume-buying public. Also, seeing their names linked with other, known prestigious perfume companies will add to their credibility. Plus you might be able to get a better deal with them.

And please offer a sample service. It will help people learn about the scents you offer and will draw them to your site.

Puredistance - Simply the best house on the planet, with 3 for 3 top frags)
Xerjoff ( Hits and misses, but when they hit, look out - super quality ingredients)
Arquiste ( A newbie that gets everything right, good nose's, good ingredients, a rarity for a newcomber)
Amouage (Attars, not EDP's) None of the Opus Seires I-V)
Histoires de Parfums (Awesome nose and quality ingredients)
Strange Invisible Perfumes (Just because the quality of their in house distillations are incredibly good)
MDCI - Hits and misses, but quality ingredients are always there)
By Kilian - ( Like some, Love some, don't care for some - but deserves to be here)
MFK ( Deserves to be here for just for the creation of Absolue pour le soir)
Soivohle ( Because Liz Zorns creative nose, combined with her unique tinctures yields some special perfumes)
Frederic Malle ( Don't like them all, but at least they make an effort to give us some good perfumes)

I would put Chanels Les Exclusifs far above and beyond any of the niche brands, but no one sells them but Chanel directly so you won't be able to. A designer isn't niche, but their exclusivity and rarity (unless it's a boutique you won't find them) makes them niche-like.

    Others:

    Serge Lutens
    Frederic Malle
    L'Artisan
    Montale
    Amouage
    Tauer
    Kilian
    Kurkdjian
    MDCI
    Ormonde Jayne

Ok, let me say first that I don't rank Guerlain, Chanel's Les Exclusifs or Caron among niche, otherwise they would have been absolutely included in my list...

    In no particular order:

    Maitre Parfumeur Et Gantier
    Comme Des Garcons
    Histoires De Parfums
    Editions De Parfums Frederic Malle
    Parfums De Nicolai
    Parfumerie Generale
    Amouage
    Divine
    (much underrated house)
    Parfum D'Empire
    Mona Di Orio
(Her latest compositions are otustanding and I felt she truly deserved to be included in my list)

Honorable menton to newer brands that, IMO, are building some solid collections: O'Driù, Calè, Profumi Del Forte, Vero Profumo.

I've not included historical brands such as Robert Piguet and Knize just because their range is too small (let's see what happens with the new Piguets...)

I'm probably in the minority here on Basenotes, but I'm finding Bond No 9 to be my personal favorite niche company so far.

When a house works for you, who cares if you're in the minority. Just keep on enjoying it.
